In addition to being the principal decision-maker at the draft table,Burke is also responsible for evaluating amateur talent at every level in allNorth American and European leagues and supervises all aspects of the club’samateur scouting efforts.Burke’s hard work and keen decision making, coupled with the talents of his <strong>com</strong>petent staff atevaluating players, has produced admired results. Burke’s selection process has helped the Sharkscreate a solid foundation of talented players from which to build the franchise around — includingPatrick Marleau (1997), Scott Hannan (1997), Jonathan Cheechoo (1998), Evgeni Nabokov (1994),Vesa Toskala (1995), Milan Michalek (2003), Steve Bernier (2003), Matt Carle (2003), Marcel Goc(2001) and Christian Ehrhoff (2001). These players have played prominent roles recently as theSharks have made consecutive appearances in the late rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.The Sharks continue to use the <strong>NHL</strong> Draft as the main foundation from which to build their team.At the start of the 2005-06 season, the Sharks had the highest percentage of self-drafted players ontheir roster of any <strong>NHL</strong> team at 67 percent.Furthermore, Burke’s mastery at the draft table has brought a bevy of top prospects into theSharks fold are recently making an impact in the <strong>NHL</strong>. Of the four conference finalists from 2003-04(San Jose, Tampa Bay, Calgary and Philadelphia), only the Sharks roster was primarily built throughthe <strong>NHL</strong> Entry Draft with 14 players selected via the <strong>NHL</strong> Entry Draft (Calgary and Philadelphia [six]and Tampa Bay [five]).A member of the Sharks scouting department since the 1992-93 campaign, Burke was promotedto his current position on June 4, 1996. Before his promotion, Burke served as director of professionalscouting from 1992-96 and evaluated talent throughout all North American professionalleagues and assisted with amateur scouting.From 1987-92, he spent five seasons in the New Jersey Devils organization, serving in severalcapacities, including as a Devils assistant coach, head coach for the American Hockey League’sUtica Devils and as a pro scout. Burke was also an assistant coach at Princeton University in 1985.Burke played five professional seasons after being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in thesixth round of the 1975 <strong>NHL</strong> Entry Draft (three years in Montreal’s system, one in Finland and one inNew Jersey’s system) after graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1977. A four-yearletterman in both hockey and baseball, Burke was named to the NCAA’s All-America hockey teamafter his senior campaign.front officeSean CoadyDirector of Professional ScoutingSean Coady enters his first season with the Sharks as director of professionalscouting.Coady spent the previous five seasons (2001-06) as director of pro scoutingand player personnel for the Boston Bruins, where he was responsible formonitoring the progress of prospects and minor league players drafted by theteam. He also provided input on potential player movements regarding playersin the National Hockey League and other minor professional leagues.Previously, the native of Scituate, Mass. spent 12 seasons with the Winnipeg Jets/PhoenixCoyotes, spending six seasons as director of player personnel and six as a professional scout.Coady played four seasons of college hockey for the University of New Hampshire, where hewas alternate captain on the Wildcats 1979 ECAC Championship team.
