Getting Together for Gidge
On each of the 868 teams who participated in the 2010 Boston Marathon ®
Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, members banded together as co-
workers, schoolmates, neighbors, and friends, all united in the fi ght against
cancer. For most of them, it was a very personal mission: the chance to honor a
loved one.
Dawn Finocchiaro, a fi ve-time veteran of the Walk, knew the effect
grassroots fundraising has on the cancer research happening in her own
backyard. But in 2010, the Walk took on new meaning when her nephew,
George “Gidge” Farraher, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July. The moment
Finocchiaro started Team Gidge, the community rallied behind the sports-
loving six-year-old from Saugus, Mass., who is currently undergoing treatment.
“The team came together very quickly,” says Finocchiaro. “I think we went
from four people to 40 in a week. It became infectious, with some people
asking, ‘Can my friend do it, too?’”
