To succeed on the golf course, a number of factors have to come together: an accu-
rate drive, a great short game, grace under pressure. For Frank Strauss, co-founder of
the Expect Miracles Golf Classic (formerly Mutual Funds Against Cancer) and chair-
man of the Expect Miracles Foundation, the right circumstances came together to
make an impact in the fi ght against cancer.
In 1995, Strauss had just become a father for the fi rst time when his mother, San-
dy, was diagnosed with leukemia and given just a one-in-three chance of survival.
When Strauss came to Dana-Farber with his mother, he was moved seeing the young
patients at the Jimmy Fund Clinic.
“As a new dad, I couldn’t help but think, ‘how would I handle having a child with
cancer?’” Strauss says. He remembers the fl ood of emotions he felt around father-
hood, his mother’s diagnosis, and realizing he had been searching for a meaningful
cause just like this.
A Kidder, Looking Out for Kids
Todd Schwartz was a “people magnet,” according to his mother, Janet, charismatic
from the time he was a wise-cracking three-year-old. Later, as a teen battling
rhabdomyosarcoma, he would bring that charm to Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic
as a supportive presence for other young patients facing cancer.
“He had a tremendous effect on the other kids in the clinic,” says Janet. “He saw
that he, as an older kid, could help them.”
He did help them, by taking their minds off treatment with jokes and magic tricks
and letting his sense of adventure defy the seemingly impossible. Todd lobbied the
clinic’s activities coordinator, Lisa Scherber, to organize a getaway for the young
patients. Sadly, Todd passed away in 2002, but Scherber realized his vision, bringing
a group to Camden Yards in Baltimore for a Boston Red Sox game in what would
become a yearly road trip.
In 2003 Todd’s friends organized the fi rst Todd J. Schwartz Memorial Softball
Classic, an event in keeping with the passionate Sox fan’s spirit, and raised $20,000
for the Jimmy Fund. Now 500 to 600 people, including Dana-Farber nurses and
and that so many had given in support of her effort. In her fi rst year, Silk raised $24,667.
In 2010, she led the Dana-Farber team again with a total of $31,380. She attributes this
success to being blessed with great friends and reaching out to everyone she knew, in any
way she could.
“Don’t be afraid to ask,” Silk says. “Cancer strikes a chord with everyone, and people
are open and willing to help. And you can say that 100 percent of the money goes to
Dana-Farber.”
Silk can also look to her family’s example of philanthropy: a gift from her parents
established the Silk Family Fund for Thoracic Oncology Research at Dana-Farber. She
plans to keep stride in her own way.
“It was an honor to raise the money over the last two years, and I hope I get to keep
doing it. I hope I do it for 200 more years.” » You can join Michelle this year. Go to
Getting Together for Gidge
On each of the 868 teams who participated in the 2010 Boston Marathon ®
Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai, members banded together as co-
workers, schoolmates, neighbors, and friends, all united in the fi ght against
cancer. For most of them, it was a very personal mission: the chance to honor a
loved one.
Dawn Finocchiaro, a fi ve-time veteran of the Walk, knew the effect
grassroots fundraising has on the cancer research happening in her own
backyard. But in 2010, the Walk took on new meaning when her nephew,
George “Gidge” Farraher, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in July. The moment
Finocchiaro started Team Gidge, the community rallied behind the sports-
loving six-year-old from Saugus, Mass., who is currently undergoing treatment.
“The team came together very quickly,” says Finocchiaro. “I think we went
from four people to 40 in a week. It became infectious, with some people
asking, ‘Can my friend do it, too?’”
fi ve-mile route from Boston College, the group met up with Gidge on Boylston Street
for the fi nal stretch to the Boston Marathon ® fi nish line.
“We really made a statement on Walk day,” Finocchiaro says of the 47-person
team, whose T-shirts were emblazoned with Gidge’s grinning face. Among last
year’s largest teams, Team Gidge plans on recruiting even more walkers in 2011.
“He felt like a rock star,” Finocchiaro says of Gidge, who also inspired a
fundraiser at his school, Our Lady of Assumption School in Lynnfi eld, Mass., which
raised $9,000 with its own “mini-Walk.”
Like so many other heroes—patients and survivors whose names grace
thousands of T-shirts, caps, signs, and painted faces on Walk day—Gidge fueled
