On the cover of this CD was a photo of a cigarbox guitar. Okay, you’ve got my interest. Now let’s see who these guys are. Nobody I’veever heard of (which is actually a plus.) Any harmonica players? Oooh wait. Jason Ricci? I’ll be giving this one alisten. And I’m glad I made that decision. JP Soars is awesome. Competing as JP Soars & the Red Hots in the bandcategory, Soars won the 2009 IBC in Memphis. He also took the IBC Best Guitarist Award. It’s no wonder someoneonce said, “Soars can stroke, persuade, bend, and stretch notes from places other guitarists haven’t even heard of.”His influences include: T-Bone Walker, Johnny Guitar Watson, Guitar Slim, Muddy Waters, Jessie Mae Hemphill andDjango Reinhardt.Here are some of the songs I really liked: “Doggin’”-–Oh yeah. Dis one got da funk fo sho. Translation: this cut hasa very infectious beat. It would be hard for a person not to start moving to the rhythm once they hear it. “SweetBlood Call”- - This old Louisiana Red tune is certainly the most chauvinistic song in music history. So try listening tothe music, the feeling, the emotion, and try not to dwell on the message. “Chasing Whiskey With Whiskey”--What isit about blues songs and whiskey that go together like…I don’t know…bees with honey?Blues CD Reviews - Jack CampbellMIKEY JRIt Ain’t Hard To Tell8th Train Records 8 TH 090www.mikeyjunior.comSinger songwriter and harmonica whiz Mikey Junior hails from EasternPennsylvania and came into the blues by way of his father’s extensive recordcollection. His harmonica heroes include: Steve Guyger (another eastern PA native),William Clarke, and George “Harmonica” Smith. Harp guys who listen to this CDwould say, “Yeah, I can hear all that.” Mikey is helped out by bandmates Matt Daniels on guitar, JimmyPritchard on electric bass, and Adam Stranburg on drums.Here are some of the songs you might like: “It Ain’t Hard To Tell,” the title cut, is classic fat toned ChicagoBlues. It’s a song about a man loving the wrong woman. He’s hooked for sure, just not too proud ofhimself. “Chitlin Con Carne” is a nice chromatic harmonica take on the classic Kenny Burrell jazzinstrumental.“You All Alone” has a west coast swing style to it. Daniels really slays the guitar on this cut. “Hand Jive” -this version of the Johnny Otis original is heated up beyond hot. Anyone trying to do the hand jive alongwith this number will likely lose a finger. “Telephone Blues” – this is where the George Smith influenceis so evident. In a recent online conversation I was involved with, the original was ranked in the top tenharmonica songs of all time. Mikey does a stellar job here, and probably needed oxygen when he wasfinished. “Mikey’s At The Bar” & “Mikey’s Out Back” are both tasty instrumentals that feature the band inMikey’s absence.8 www.NatchelBlues.org • JULY/AUGUST 2012
