FROM THE RECREATION COORDINATOR - Wilma Groen
Hello Everyone!
November is just on the horizon, and we all need to keep active throughout the winter months. Hibernating
is for bears, but we need to do exercises, and enjoy a Pot Luck Lunch, or event at the Centre
with friends so that we enjoy life to its fullest! We are having a Remembrance Day Program and
Brunch at 10:15 a.m. on November 11 th , with the Fun Chorus. We are also having a trip presentation
with Collette Tours on November 22 nd , so see if you want to travel when the weather is snowy here,
and find a place to enjoy the sun. We are also doing a trip to China in March 2012, which I am sure
you would enjoy. Flyers are available at the Centre, so come out and see the great price of this trip.
We would like to do another presentation soon, so that you can see what is available on this trip. Insurance
prices are also available at the Centre, so just ask Marlene Smith or staff for the rates they
have for you. Another event that will be here on November 19 th , is the “Nashville Sound”, so come
out and listen and dance to the music.
December is a celebration month, as Christmas programs and parties are taking place at the Centre.
Different classes have their own special day for a luncheon, and the Centre is having a Christmas
Party on December 7 th at noon. Tickets will be $15.00 and I am sure that everyone will have a good
time. A “Special Guest” will make his appearance early this year! Our evening party did not have
enough people last year, so unless we sell out, we will probably have one daytime party this year.
Make sure you book early, so that you will not be disappointed.
We also have a Pot Luck Lunch on December 23 rd , and a sing-song, so come out and enjoy this time
with everyone.
In January come out and try something new, as we do have a “new” Mosaics Class, and the work
they are doing, is awesome! Other classes are ready to have you come and enjoy friendship and fun as
well! Do not feel bored over the winter months!! Exercise in a nice studio, is also alternative for getting
rid of the “winter blues” as well as a spare tire if we stay fit with Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Dancing
classes, and other fun ways to keep active!
We wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Healthy and Happy New Year! Staying young is a secret,
and keeping busy is part of the secret, and the rest is up to each and everyone of us! Enjoy life, it
is a gift that we have received, and we have the obligation to make it better for all who touch our
lives. Hug someone, it makes everyone fell better!
Till next time…..Wilma Groen
“MEMORIAL DONATIONS”
A very special thank you to the families of our late members who, at a very
difficult time in their lives, have remembered the Centre in different ways
— by mentioning their loved one’s membership here at the Centre and
by suggesting donations may be made to the
Special Projects Fund.
Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to those not in the best of health!
We have a limited number of bricks
still available for sponsorship at $100.00 each
The “Corporate” Portion of our Brick Wall still has spots available - this is for donations of
between $1,000 and $4,999 (bronze); between $5,000 and $9,999 (silver); and $10,000 and above (gold).
We are keeping track of all donations received since the beginning of our Brick Wall project (that have not been
acknowledged with either a Brick or a Teddy Bear) and once an individual’s donations reach the $1,000 mark
they will be acknowledged on the “Corporate” wall.
Thanks to all who support the Centre’s fundraising efforts
Tax Receipts will be issued for all donations.
Ancaster Keeps Its Head Above Water!
June was a spectacular month at the Ancaster Senior Achievement Centre!
Aubrey Smith, a very active member of our Centre, has been in the ‘swim of
things’ for many years, but 2011 was a special year. Twenty-eleven actually began
back in August 2010 with a great swimming performance at the Canada 55+ Games
held in Brockville, Ontario. The Canada 55+ Games are held every two years.
These Games provide the silver and gold medal winners from the various Provincial
games held across the country to compete against each other at a National level.
And, it is a big event! In fact, over 3000 competitors from our nine provinces and
two territories participated in 21 events scheduled in a five day period in Brockville.
The Brockville Games were opened by the Games Torch Bearer Walter Gretsky, another area senior!
And perhaps it was a good omen for Aubrey to have a ‘winner’ like Walter on hand. Aubrey won four medals
in the 55+ age category against the top senior swimmers in the country. He finished with Gold Medal in
the 100 meter Breaststroke; Silver Medals in the 50 meter Freestyle and the 50 meter Breaststroke; and, a
Bronze in the 100 meter Freestyle. Smith also was a member of a ‘two man - two women’ medley race that
outpaced the Yukon and Alberta teams. Not only did the medley performances lead to medals, but also enabled
Ontario to win the swimming portion of the Canada Games. Clearly, Aubrey and his colleagues made
waves in Brockville!
Following his outstanding swimming performances in the Canada 55+ Games, Aubrey was invited to
represent Canada at the prestigious International 55+ Summer Games held in Houston Texas last June. The
55+ Games, although clearly focused on performance, are dedicated to encouraging older adults to not only
compete at their highest possible level, but also pursue healthy lifestyles through participation in sports and
personal fitness. The 55+ Summer Games, organized by the National Senior Games Association, have
grown to become one of the largest multi-sport events in the world, and now draws athletes in a broad range
of sports and activities from across the US, Europe and Canada,
The Houston event was ‘no small potatoes!’ More than 10,000 women and men athletes competed in 18
sports held in 14 different venues in the Houston area over the course of 15 days. One hundred and four of
these athletes were from Canada participating in activities ranging from archery, badminton, basketball,
bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, walking and racquetball to shuffleboard, softball, table tennis, tennis,
track and field, triathlon and volleyball. Oh yes, and did we mention swimming!
Well Aubrey did very well! He competed in four events, and despite a shoulder separation just prior to the
Games, he trussed himself up, gritted his teeth, and managed a 14 th place finish. Well done Aubrey! We are
delighted you were part of the 55+ Games in Houston, as well as the Canada Games in Brockville. And, we
congratulate the 104 Canadians for their participation in the Houston Games and applaud them for returning
home with more than twenty plus Medals. These seniors help us to focus our attention on the importance of
fitness and the potential that lays dormant within many of us! Whether it is chair exercises, painting, golf or
swimming, our challenge is to exploit our opportunities. Aubrey and his colleagues have demonstrated the
possible each of us have to explore and develop. While Aubrey is getting ready now for Canada Games in
Halifax in 2012, let’s all of us start tomorrow setting goals to improve our fitness and get on with it!
Wow! It sure was a great June in Ancaster!
ANCASTER FAIR 2011
Many thanks to all our volunteers for
promoting the Ancaster Senior Centre
@ the Ancaster Fairgrounds. Special
thanks to the Golden Swing Band for
sharing their musical talent with
everyone.
The ALBERTONES &
TWENTY CHOIR
Sang some wonderful songs and created an
entertaining atmosphere at Ancaster Seniors
Centre. A delicious luncheon was provided.
Everyone appreciated the songs that they
sang, as quite a few were familiar tunes that
we all knew.

INFORMATION CHANGES: Please let us know if you’ve moved or changed your phone number, doctor, emergency
contact, etc.
FOOD SHARE: We have a box at the Centre for donations to the food share and we welcome all donations. Many thanks to all who
donated. Our donations have been acknowledged, with thanks.
SUGGESTION BOX: Just a reminder that the suggestion box is on the wall in the main hallway, and we are always
open to suggestions.
ALUMINUM TABS: We still collect aluminum tabs (from pop cans), which we pass on to the groups who collect the tabs.
Our donations have already helped in purchasing several wheelchairs. 2½ million are needed for one wheelchair.
BOUTIQUE: Remember we still have gifts of various types available in our boutique area now located in the Main Hall.
REGISTER TAPES: We accept ZEHRS. Please separate your tapes into groups.
We DO NOT COLLECT: Ron’s Food Basics, the Barn or Fortino’s. They do not participate in the Save-A-Tape program. If you
include them it makes it more difficult for our volunteers who then have to check every tape.
JOURNAL ADVERTISING:
POT LUCK LUNCHES
I just wanted to let all our Pot Luck people know, that if you do not feel like cooking, there are other alternatives.
You could pick up some sliced cold meat, salads, jellos, possibly a meat pie, or other frozen entrée, (and heat it in the
oven before you come); or ice cream, pies, (the bakeries in the stores do some great baking)!!
This would help our Staff who are now spending some valuable time cooking, instead of doing their own particular
jobs. This makes it hard to find the time to do everything. Please see if these ideas will work for you, as it would definitely
work for the Centre.
