2 / Annual Report 2010Chair’s ReportDemonstrating a familiar agility and prudence the RNZB has yet again returned astrong artistic and financial result in 2010. Both the company and many elements ofthe environment in which it operates experienced a high rate of change. Our artisticprogramme remains determined to bring New Zealanders new works along with twists oncomfortable favourites.2010 saw a huge increase in the diversity and reach of our product through electronicmedia; a mix of the eight-part ‘behind the scenes’ documentary The Secret Lives ofDancers, the viral popularity on YouTube of the workshop piece set to Lady Gaga’s hit BadRomance and the launch of an RNZB facebook page. These presences attract an audienceneither measured nor commercially engaged in conventional ways. Our challenge is toconvert these new eyes to attending live performances and experiencing the full artistic andproduction values of our dancers on stage.Several long standing artists moved on in 2010. Most notable among them was GaryHarris who had led the company artistically for nine years and returned to his native UK atthe end of the year. He taught and formed a generation of our dancers. His signature wasclear across a decade of programme selection, collaboration with local and offshore creativetalent and witty engagement with our audiences and supporters. Gary’s legacy is rich andthe company is grateful for his long commitment to its development and its fortunes.We are pleased that Gary will return to work with the company on 2011’s The Sleeping Beautyseason. Matz Skoog returns to the role of Artistic Director in the interim until the arrivalin September 2011 of Ethan Stiefel who comes to us from prestigious performing andacademic roles in North America.Mindful that we plan and commit to schedules and productions up to two years outthe increased uncertainty of growth in domestic and global economic environmentsis a heightened hazard. The company’s management nimbly responded to weakerthan budgeted box office in early 2010 with stringent expense control and additionalperformances late in the year to deliver a healthy bottom line. The surplus will be managedcarefully to buffer the company from any further weakening in audience discretionaryspend and to invest in areas that will directly advance the long term sustainability of earnedrevenues.In 2010, change came to the Board of Trustees too. Tony Nowell and Warren Lesliegenerously extended their tenures to see the company through an extra year ofimplementing the marketing plan and financial management transition in which theyrespectively took governance lead. We thank them for their seven years of service.Additional demands on the Board came with the search for and selection of Ethan Stiefel asour new Artistic Director.To bolster resources on the Board and practical support for the company’s strategy threenew trustees were appointed at the year end. We welcome John Meehan, Geoff Thomasand Miriam Dean in 2011.

The Ministry for Culture andHeritage, Meridian Energy, TOWER and The Lion Foundation continue to fund uswith significant cash contributions and their respective and very distinctive brands ofmoral support. A large group of other cash and in kind sponsors, both businesses andindividuals, enable us to provide the variety of activity and to tour throughout New Zealand.They are an integral part of this national institution.
