This makes educational <strong>and</strong> vocational guidancean essential tool <strong>in</strong> many people’s lives, particularlywhen consider<strong>in</strong>g a change of career or a returnto education <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g.Open youth education (den fri ungdomsuddannelse,FUU) normally takes two years. It is an <strong>in</strong>dividualtra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g scheme. This means that young people,together with a guidance counsellor, prepare theirown personal tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme. The purpose is todevelop the student both personally <strong>and</strong> vocationally,giv<strong>in</strong>g him or her more opportunities for cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>education or tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g or for f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g a job. A youngperson can draw up a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g scheme at a recognisedschool, which will be responsible for the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Itcould be a youth school, a youth board<strong>in</strong>g school, aschool for arts <strong>and</strong> crafts, a folk high school for youngpeople, or a production school. At least half a yearmust be spent at a school. The rest of the scheme mayconsist of e.g. practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, project work or educationabroad.At a production school (produktionsskole) there is bothpractical <strong>and</strong> theoretical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. As a rule most of thetra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g takes place <strong>in</strong> workshops where many differentproducts are made. The tra<strong>in</strong>ees are also giventhe opportunity to go to classes <strong>in</strong> Danish, Arithmetic,IT <strong>and</strong> other subjects. A person (young or adult) maystart at a production school at any time <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uefor up to two years.Via the “dual” (ord<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>and</strong> adult) education system itis possible for every Dane – throughout life – tochange between employment <strong>and</strong> education <strong>and</strong>/or tocomb<strong>in</strong>e the two accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>dividual needs or18
