The results were not affected because FGDs andKIIs were conducted in every TA.1.5.2 Focus group discussionsThese were conducted in selected villages and each group consisted of between 15and 20 participants. The discussions were conducted in the participants ownlanguages. Members of the research team who were conversant with theparticipants languages facilitated and took notes on the proceedings. Theparticipants were also given an opportunity to ask questions or just make somecomments if they had any. The discussions were recorded on tape. Theserecordings and the notes taken during the discussions were used to write a reporton the discussions. Once a report was written, it was submitted to a supervisor tocheck so as to ensure that no key detail was missed. In total 77 FGDs wereconducted in both regions.1.5.3 Key in<strong>for</strong>mant interviewsMostly KIIs were conducted with traditional leaders especially TAs, group villageheadmen/women and village headmen/women. These were targeted because oftheir knowledge regarding the linguistic make up of their areas. In order tovalidate the in<strong>for</strong>mation obtained from the key in<strong>for</strong>mants the same questionswere asked during FGDs where the questions were debated extensively andopenly. Apart from traditional leaders, some influential people such as DistrictCommissioners and civil society leaders were also interviewed.
