It appears Chichewa iswidely spoken in several districts of the two regions. Ciyawo is widely spoken inMangochi, Machinga, Zomba and Balaka.6.2 Materials written in local languagesThe study also sought to find out whether or not the respondents knew of any materialswritten in any of the local languages spoken in the two regions. Out of the 1802 totalnumber of respondents, only 772 representing 42.8% indicated that they had someknowledge of the materials written in local languages. When asked to furnish furtherinformation on the materials they claimed to know such as title, author, publisher, dateand year of publication most of them were unable to do so. Even during FGDs, some ofthe participants claimed to have some knowledge about materials written in locallanguages but were unable to provide more information as already alluded to above. Thiscould partly be attributed to the fact that the literacy levels in the country are still lowdespite the fact that the country has made important strides in improving them throughvarious programmes. It could also be partly due to lack of reading culture or simply thefact that such knowledge is not felt to be beneficial. A summary of materials and thelocal languages in which they are written is shown in the Appendix 2.38
The findings of the survey show that Chichewa has the longest list of publicationsbecause it has had a long literary tradition in the country which is enhanced by its being anational language.The survey results have also revealed that other languages likeCitumbuka, Ciyawo, Cisena, Cilomwe and Citonga have some written materials buthardly comparable to Chichewa. An important aspect of these materials is that most ofthem have titles that suggest that their contents are educational/didactic in nature. Theyare straightforward school readers, agriculture/health manuals, religious materials orgovernment propaganda.39
