The newcampaign includes a 30-second television spot airing inNew Orleans and a Web site (www.lsuhscimportantwork.com) featuring an informational video.LSU School <strong>of</strong> Dentistry Launches Summer Academic Programfor MinoritiesDr. Shawky Mohamed, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> prosthodontics and director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> LSU TMJClinic, demonstrates <strong>the</strong> waxing technique for Frank Howard who was among<strong>the</strong> 15 students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inaugural class for <strong>the</strong> Summer Enrichment Program.In a strong sign <strong>of</strong> recovery, <strong>the</strong> LSU School<strong>of</strong> Dentistry established a new, six-week SummerMulticultural Enrichment Program with 15 studentsrepresenting seven universities. The goal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixweekacademic program is to increase student diversityat <strong>the</strong> dental school and ultimately to better serve<strong>the</strong> dental needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong>’s diverse population,according to Dr. John Ritchie, director <strong>of</strong> diversity andminority affairs at LSUSD.The core <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program was 174 hours <strong>of</strong> lectures,clinics, laboratories and demonstrations in <strong>the</strong> basicsciences and clinical dentistry. Twenty-seven members<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dental school faculty provided classes in suchtopics as dental anatomy, operative dentistry, headand neck anatomy and oral histology. The laboratorycomponent included making simple cavity preparationson dent<strong>of</strong>orm (plastic) teeth and placing restorations(fillings). O<strong>the</strong>r hands-on exercises were dental waxingand chalk carving.There was a strong emphasis on <strong>the</strong> admissionsprocess at LSUSD including preparation for <strong>the</strong> national<strong>Dental</strong> Admissions Test (DAT). This consisted <strong>of</strong> 11,three-hour lecture sessions and three examinations.The 15 students came from <strong>the</strong> followinguniversities: Xavier University, Dillard University,Sou<strong>the</strong>rn University/New Orleans, <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong>New Orleans, LSU/Baton Rouge, Sou<strong>the</strong>rn University/Baton Rouge and <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Arkansas/Pine Bluff.The students were selected through a formal processthat included application, personal essay, <strong>of</strong>ficialcollege transcripts and letter <strong>of</strong> recommendation, all<strong>of</strong> which were presented to several members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>school’s admissions committee.Students were provided housing on <strong>the</strong> campus <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> New Orleans, as well as a stipend forliving expenses.36 LDA <strong>Journal</strong>
