SECTION 1 - DESIGN1.1 Standard Size, Type and Class of PipesThe types of pipe materials commonly used in new works for both fresh andsalt water mains by WSD are as follows:Pipe Size(nominal diameterType of Pipe Materialin mm)700 and above Steel300 to 600 Ductile Iron (DI) Steel150 to 250 Buried Pipe: Blue Polyethylene (PE), steel, DI Exposed Pipe: Steel, DI100 and below Buried Pipe: Blue PE, DI Exposed Fresh Water Pipe: Lined Galvanised Iron(GIL), steel, DI Exposed Salt Water Pipe: Black PEService Connections Buried Fresh Water Pipe: Blue PE Buried Salt Water Pipe: Blue PE Exposed Fresh Water Pipe: Stainless Steel Exposed Salt Water Pipe: Black PEWhere other types of materials (such as stainless steel for exposed salt waterpipes with nominal diameter 100 and below, stainless steel for exposed saltwater service connections, etc.) are proposed in the new works, prior agreementshould be sought from the relevant Chief Engineer/Region of WSD.The size of water mains refers to the nominal diameter (abbreviated as DN) forpipes other than polyethylene pipes and to the nominal size (abbreviated as NS)for polyethylene pipes. The standard nominal diameters of pipes used byWSD, together with the equivalent nominal sizes of PE pipes (up to 315 mm)are listed below:
