Board certified physicians and allied providers have participated in a voluntary process that involves<br />
evaluation of their knowledge and skills beyond what is required for them to become licensed<br />
physicians. The standards for board certification, such as the type of evaluation, and whether<br />
additional education and training are required, vary depending on the certifying board.<br />

Fellowship trained physicians have completed a fellowship, the period of medical training a physician<br />
may undertake after completing a specialty training program, are known as fellows. Fellows are<br />
capable of acting as an attending physician or consultant physician in the generalist field in which<br />
they were trained. After completing a fellowship in the relevant sub-specialty, the physician is<br />
permitted to practice without direct supervision by other physicians in that sub-specialty.<br />
Physicians or allied providers that have passed evaluations specific to an area of expertise but are<br />
not represented by one of the organizations listed above.<br />
