2009COLTS REpORT
2010 was a very special year for the South Fremantle Colts.
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the absolute commitment and
passion the players have displayed over the course of a season.
Every player represented the South Fremantle Football Club with
upmost distinction in training, games and off-field commitments
and I have no doubt many of these young men will continue their
outstanding involvement with the Bulldogs.
Colts football is a development program and as a coach, my
personal ambition, is to develop fine young men and I think we
have achieved that.
We played a total of 61 players and provided opportunities to
many young men in our metro and country zones and from the
Warriors Academy.
12 players played made a successful transition into senior football
playing a handful of reserves games late in the season, and Shane
Kersten graduated to league football.
I would like to congratulate the seven players who were selected
in the WA State 18s, the highest representation from any of the
WAFL clubs, a credit to South Fremantle, the coaching staff and
the players involved.
The 2010 season started with a bang as our full strength colts
team defeated East Perth (home), reigning premiers Claremont
(away) and Perth (home) to be 5-3 after the first round of fixtures.
The next round saw many opportunities arise with the State
campaign and injuries change the make-up of the team. Many
players from the colts rookie list became regulars and we were
fortunate to have a plethora of players from the Warriors program
ready for colts football.
Whilst we only won one more game for the season, there were
many outstanding efforts and performances against more
experienced opposition.
It was a tough way to learn about WAFL football but football is a
cruel, demanding game and I have no doubt this learning will pay
dividends in the coming seasons.
I would like to personally thank my coaching staff for their
diligence, professionalism and good nature this season.
Bruce Fraser, who has gone over and above in his role as assistant
coach this season, has guided me through some tough times this
season and I sincerely thank him for his contribution to the program.
Assistant coaches Daniel Vidovich, Daniel Gilmore and David
Daws all brought an intellect to the coaching panel, various
experiences and developed strong relationships with all the boys.
To Sue Jones, who did not miss training all season, I thank you
for your outstanding role as colts manager and Lew Turner for his
dedication as game day manager.
Thanks to colts chairman Terry Dean, for the enormous volume of
work he did behind the scenes, always solving problems and making
the environment a positive one for players and coaches alike.
Thanks to Sue Griffiths, Harry and Terry for the important roles
that made the game day operation very smooth, we all appreciate
your assistance.
To all the training and medical staff who helped out through the
year your contribution was invaluable.
I must make a special mention to Colin Griffiths Jnr for his
enormous effort as head water boy for the 2010 season. Always
smiling, Colin is a fine young man who always lifted the spirits of
the group.
I would like to thank all the parents who have supported the
program and given me positive feedback through the journey, for
a first-year coach I sincerely appreciate you help.
Thanks to John Dimmer and Garry Fuller for their mentorship
throughout the season, to have two senior premiership coaches in
your corner is an incredible privilege to a young WAFL coach and
I appreciate your efforts.
Finally, thanks to Pete Christie, a great football person, who
always provided support and friendship throughout the season.
I believe the South Fremantle Football Club is very fortunate to
have Pete as director of football.
In closing, I wish to thank the South Fremantle Football Club for
giving me the opportunity to coach; I have had one of my most
enjoyable years of football involvement and have learned more
about football clubs than ever before.
Unfortunately, I will not continue coaching in 2011 due to
increasing work commitments however I have no doubt the team
will be in very good shape and the lesson learned this year will
turn the tables in the next.
Good luck to all the boys, we have had a lot of laughs this season
and I hope you keep enjoying your football.
