17 and 25°C. When the temperature is
below this range, as is the case part of
the year in most parts of Eurasia and
North America, or above this range, as
in some of the production countries,
the disease will most probably not be
detected. In other words, a negative
test does not mean that the fish are
free of the disease.
Disease free status
Until now only a limited number of
countries have decided on establishing
disease freedom for SVC. In several
countries zones have been officially
declared disease-free, and in more
countries selected farms are officially
disease-free.
Legislation
Fish susceptible to SVC (including koi
and goldfish) may only be imported
into these countries, zones or farms if
they originate from a country, zone or
farm which also has an official
disease-free status.
EUS and KHV have only recently been
added to the OIE list of notifiable
diseases. It is not clear whether many
OIE members will start a program to
achieve disease-free status for these
diseases. It is very doubtful that the
costs for this implementation and
regular controls will be commercially
feasible.
