Ornamental Fish International industry is an ethically responsible industry. Types of legislation In general we deal with three types of legislation: 1) Customs legislation (transport of what is mentioned on the invoice, in the quantities indicated, and payment of the requested taxes); 2) Animal welfare legislation (transport conditions, demands on importers and exporters, welfare of the animals during transport); and 3) Animal Health legislation (avoidance of importation of infectious diseases, which can harm fish stocks in the importing country). In Europe it is arranged on a European level, as all agricultural products entering the European Union (EU) are inspected at the first entry point into the EU, for fish this is usually at the first border inspection post (BIP). The two other types of legislation usually take place at a national and an international level. On a national level In most countries nowadays people cannot just start a business in the ornamental aquatic industry. They need a permit to do so and in many countries it is not enough to officially register and pay your taxes, the companies need to show that they have enough knowledge to handle live animals properly. Huso-Kallio, Deputy Director of DG SANCO stated at the first European conference on animal welfare: " Animal Welfare is here…and it is here to stay".
