Legislation
On an international level
IATA
On an international level
we are faced with various
types of legislation. The
IATA in its Live Animal Regulations
(IATA-Lar) set rules for airlines for the
packing of animals. The IATA-Lar has
been incorporated in the national
legislation of many countries and has
therefore become international
legislation.
The term IATA stands for International
Air Transport Associations. It is
the most important association
in the air transport sector. All
major airlines worldwide are
members of IATA. IATA is also a
standard setting organisation,
for flight safety, for maintenance
but also for animal welfare
during air transport.
To ensure the safe transport of
live animals by air, IATA has
established the Live Animal
Regulations. These regulations
provide a set of detailed rules
for packing methods, labelling of
containers, feeding and watering
during transport, documentation
and all other matters related to
the transport of animals. The
Regulations are updated every
two years and a copy of the
Regulations can be obtained
from IATA (http://www.iata.org/
ps/publications/9105.htm) in
digital format on CD Rom or in
book form.
The Regulations are
updated by a committee of
IATA, consisting of animal
transport specialists after
consulting with observers
from animal welfare
organisations and animal protection
organisations and with input from the
trade.
Although developed by an association,
the IATA Live Animal Regulations are
incorporated into the national laws of
many countries.
