Less than 65 km
For shipments transported less than 65
km no authorisation for the
transporters is needed, nor is an
approved vehicle or a trained driver. It
is necessary to carry special
documentation, indicating the animals
being transported , destination and
estimated travel time.
Farther than 65 km but less than an 8hour
drive: authorisation for the
transporters, an approved vehicle and
a trained driver are necessary. It is
also necessary to carry special
documentation, indicating the animals
being transported , destination and
estimated travel time. For transports

the demands as described in the
Appendix apply. Travel time starts
when the vehicle starts driving.
Countries may decide in special cases
to allow 12 hours' driving time instead
of 8 hours. Animals must be packed
according to IATA Lar.
More than 8-hour drive: authorisation
for the transporters, a permit for the
vehicle and a trained driver are
necessary. A special logbook is
needed for transport. For transports
the demands as described in the
Appendix apply. The precise point
where the transport starts; when the
first animals are loaded ; or when the
vehicle starts driving is not well-defined
and may be interpreted differently by
different EU Member States. Animals
must be packed according to IATA Lar.
