FEATURE STORYSRUSHTI JANUARY - MARCH, 2010In the current digital world, most of the in<strong>for</strong>mation and resources are in a digital <strong>for</strong>m. The issue of restrictingaccess to these resources and in<strong>for</strong>mation based on the user or process that desires to use it is addressed bythe concept of access control mechanisms. A system can be secured by defining a security model that defineswho can access what in the system. These access rights restrictions can be user-based, role-based, attributebased(i.e., base on the characteristics of the user), or usage-based (<strong>for</strong> example, if the usage of a particularuser is more, the user may have to be stopped from accessing that resource).Cryptography is the science or in fact an art of concealing things. It basically is the study of sending data in aconcealed <strong>for</strong>m from a source to a destination. There are many algorithms that do this job whose security isbased on a value called the KEY which needs to be kept secret. Mathematics <strong>for</strong>ms the basis <strong>for</strong> most of thecryptographic techniques. A great deal of research has been done in this area of computer science and also inmathematics to have secure communications. There have been umpteen number of algorithms proposed to bebroken by some other researchers only to be improved further. Thus this field has emerged as a field of a greatpotential which would need a lot of work to be done (either in making a new security system or breaking anexisting one) as security is one which would be a requirement always.MultimediaMultimedia is used in various <strong>for</strong>ms and <strong>for</strong> various purposes. Various fields like computer graphics, computervision, computer animation, visual programming contribute to the branch of multimedia.“Art challenges Technology; Technology inspires Art”- John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer <strong>for</strong> Disney PIXARResearch in Computer Graphics covers a broad range of topics including both photorealistic and nonrealisticimage synthesis, curve and surface design, multi resolution methods, modeling, motion capture, motion editing,animation, interactive 3D interfaces, image editing, and colour reproduction.Computer vision research investigates waysto model, capture, manipulate, retrieve, andvisualize real-world objects and environments.Computer vision combined with machinelearning techniques are being studied <strong>for</strong>passive observation, recognition andunderstanding of activities in natural settings,using distributed set of cameras. The newComputer Graphics lab at ETH Zurich offersa masters program in Visual Computing.Building Computational models of anatomicaland functional variability from medical images,and developing methods <strong>for</strong> predicting newsubjects based on images and prior in<strong>for</strong>mationconstitute medical imaging or medical imageanalysis. These methods are used inneuroscience to be applied in surgical planning.12
