VCE COORDINATOR - REPORTVCE 2011It was wonderful to welcome back students in Year 11 and 12 on Friday, February 4, and see friends reunitingafter a restful break. I look forward to working closely with your daughters in 2011 and look forward to meetingmany of you personally.On Monday February 7, the Year 11 students have started the year with a whole day orientation daydedicated to study skills and work habits. Our facilitator, Marcus McIness, from Key Note Speakers Australia,detailed a range of strategies and behaviours which will no doubt assist the girls in making good choices asthey begin a most important year. It is paramount that students get off to a good start and we hope thissession does exactly that. For many students this year is a fresh start and a symbolic step into the seniorschool which brings with it significant responsibilities and a sustained a need for a consistent work ethic.The Year 12 students also began the year on a positive note with our special guest speaker, Sacha Kaluri,from The Motivational Company speaking to the students about stress and dealing with stress.Her strategies were clear down to earth and easy to follow. She proved to be most entertaining andinformative. It certainly sets the scene for a year of dedicated and focused study!I wish all the senior students a successful year and I remind them to always do to KEEP UP RATHER THANCATCH UP in their studies this year as we look forward to the year ahead. By now all students would have met their mathematics teachers,organised their books and calculators and have commenced the first topic or activity.I’d like to take this opportunity to present some key mathematics information to students and parents atdifferent levels.The Year 10 Mathematics Committee is open to all Year 10 students. The committee will promote, prepareand present a range of events for students of other year levels. In previous years these events have includeda Year 7 and 8 Maths Day between AMI and Simonds College students and a Primary Maths Day for Grade 4to 6 students from our local feeder schools. Interested students will be asked to nominate in the next week.Year 10 students were asked on the booklist to purchase a graphing calculator. This technology is introducedin Year 10 so students build their familiarisation and begin using it in their studies. Methods Pathway studentsmust own one and General Pathway students are strongly encouraged to purchase one. It will actually assistthe General Pathways students greatly this year. Year 9 students have the option of completing Advanced Mathematics. This enables us to provide the mostappropriate content and assessment for all students. Mathematics teachers have explained the process totheir classes and interested students are asked to return the form to their teacher as soon as possible.Year 7 and Year 8 students have to option to participate in the Enrichment Mathematics program. Thisprogram is offered to enthusiastic and capable students who are keen to work on challenging activities andparticipate in various Mathematics competitions. Information about this program will be distributed bymathematics teachers next week.The Australian Mathematics Competition will be held in August and is a competition open to all students.We do ask though, that students who decide to participate will need to prepare for this event by completingprevious papers and studying content areas. Previous papers can be sourced from SIMON and yourmathematics teacher. Students in the Musical have been busy practising thedance routines learned during the school holidays. Well done to all who attended the rehearsals. The castnow needs to get a move on as we approach opening night in May.Millie Sedlarevic and The Western Australian Academy of Performing ArtsCongratulations to Millie Sedlarevic, Music Captain Year 12, 2010, for being offered a position at WAAPA -The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) at Edith Cowan University. WAAPA isrecognised nationally and internationally for the quality of its graduates. WAAPA provides the mostcomprehensive range of performing arts training in Australia and students can choose from a range ofinternationally recognised courses. World-class staff working in state-of-the-art performance and teachingfacilities provide rigorous and specialised training of the highest order. These courses offer students theopportunity to realise their artistic ambitions. Entry into the courses is competitive and prospective studentsundertake an audition and / or interview as part of the application process. The Academy communality wouldlike to wish Millie all the best as she moves to Western Australia to pursue her career in Music, Acting, Songand Dance.Grease The MusicalWith only 95 days to go until opening night, the cast and crew of “Grease, The Musical” have been workinghard to put together a production of exceptional quality. After having a huge success with last year’s “Leaderof the Pack”, the cast of “Grease” is looking forward to the challenges ahead and aims to make this year’smusical even better than the last. Together with the help of Mr Hessey, Mrs Appleby and our team ofchoreographers, we have succeeded in perfecting the first of our dances, which were showcased at thePerforming Arts Concert last year.Over our relaxing 8 week holiday, the cast had three extra rehearsals; the first involved just the leads andproduction team in order to fine tune the script and get the performance skills up to scratch; the other twowere attended by the full cast to get to grips with the new dances. The cast are really looking forward toperforming “Grease”, as it is such a well-known and popular musical and movie. With our Academy girls, andthe Simonds boys, “Grease, The Musical” is certainly a performance not to be missed!Harriet Darby Year 11, Production TeamInstrumental Music LessonsAll students who have private music lessons are to check their lesson times on the timetable located in themusic room. Please notify directly in advance your instrumental teacher if you cannot attend your lessons. Ifthere are any other concerns about private instrumental music lessons please see Mr. Hessey or MrsJessicaSynaphet, Music Secretary, located in the student office.
