646 Chapter Sixteenmercially available today are polystyrene modified. PPOs are usuallyjoined by solvent cementing or thermal welding.Polyphenylene oxide joints must mate almost perfectly; otherwisesolvent welding provides a weak bond. Excellent solvents for cementingare ethylene dichloride, toluene, chloroform, or a blend of 95%ethylene dichloride and 5% carbon tetrachloride. A mixture of 95%chloroform and 5% carbon tetrachloride is the best solvent system forgeneral-purpose bonding, but very good ventilation is necessary. Ethylenedichloride offers a slower rate of evaporation for large structuresor hot climates.Best results have been obtained by applying the solvent cement toonly one substrate. An even film of solvent should be applied. Verylittle solvent cement is needed. An open time of 10 secs should beallowed before mating the parts. Optimum holding time has beenfound to be 4 min, with an applied pressure of approximately 400 psi.Table 16.11 lists properties of solvent-welded PPO bonds.Thermal welding techniques found suitable for modified polyphenyleneoxide parts include: heat sealing, spin welding, vibration welding,resistance wire welding, electromagnetic bonding, and ultrasonics.Excellent bonds are possible because the low thermal conductivityof the modified polyphenylene oxide prevents dissipation of heat fromthe bonding surfaces.Various adhesives can be used to bond polyphenylene oxide to itselfor to other substrates. Parts must be prepared by sanding or by chromicacid etching at elevated temperature. Methyl alcohol is a suitablesolvent for surface cleaning.
