CARDIAC ARREST (GIVING CPR)Main thing is do compressions to keep blood moving until help arrives!Things to watch for…Not responding or passed outNot breathing <strong>and</strong> no pulseBroken bones or chest, head, neck or spine injuriesWhat to do…• Call 9-1-1 for an ambulance.• Check ABCs… Airway, Breathing, & Circulation.• Tilt head all the way back <strong>and</strong> lift chin. (Be careful withchild’s or infant’s head… just tilt a little bit!)• Watch chest, listen, <strong>and</strong> feel for breathing for 5 seconds.If victim is NOT breathing begin Rescue Breathing…• Pinch victim’s nose shut.• Open mouth wide to make tight seal around victim’smouth. For INFANT - cover both mouth <strong>and</strong> nose!• Give victim 2 full breaths (each breath should be 1-2seconds long <strong>and</strong> make the chest rise.)• Immediately begin giving CPR.To begin CPR• Find h<strong>and</strong> position in center of chest over breastbone– see illustrations on next 3 pages...FOR ADULTS – [see illustration 3-1 on page 190]FOR CHILDREN – [see illustration 3-2 on page 191]FOR INFANTS – [see illustration 3-3 on page 192]• Begin chest compressions (at least 100 compressions perminute according to American Heart Association) usingthe following guidelines:ADULTS – Using both h<strong>and</strong>s, compress chest 30 times.CHILDREN – Using one h<strong>and</strong>, compress chest 30 times.INFANTS – Using 2 fingers, compress chest 30 times.• Give victim 2 full breaths. (If not comfortable giving rescuebreaths, keep doing compressions - push hard & pushfast to keep oxygenated blood moving through victim!)• Repeat 30 chest compressions (<strong>and</strong> 2 full breaths, ifdoing) until victim recovers or medical help arrives.• If victim recovers (starts breathing or pukes <strong>and</strong> pulseresumes), turn victim onto their side to keep airway open.www.itsadisaster.net or call 1-888-999-4325189
