Before- <strong>and</strong> after-school enrichment activities services for prekindergarten age childrenmay be coordinated with existing before/after enrichment activities programs funded byother sources In accordance with <strong>LA</strong> 4 Prekindergarten Program <strong>Guidelines</strong>.Before- <strong>and</strong> after-school enrichment activities are components of the totalprekindergarten program, <strong>and</strong> therefore, shall support positive child development. Theenvironment shall provide a variety of appropriate activities for children to self-select. Ifthe before- <strong>and</strong> after-school personnel are other than the child’s regular classroomteacher, weekly oral or written communications shall inform the two providersconcerning observations related to the child’s developmental needs.The following before- <strong>and</strong> after-school enrichment activities program practices areconsidered inappropriate <strong>and</strong> unacceptable:a) Requiring children to participate in rest/naptime periods (Individual needs forrest/sleep can be met.)b) Restricting children to only outside play or to only inside play (except duringinclement weather)c) Allowing children to watch television programs or videos for longer than 40minutes of the time spent in before- <strong>and</strong> after-enrichment activitiesd) Allowing children or adults to hear or view television programming, video,radio, audio, or Internet sites that are inappropriate for young childrenNo form of demeaning language or corporal punishment (which includes but is notlimited to paddling, striking, or hitting) shall be used with any child enrolled in the schoolsystem’s prekindergarten programs.The LEA shall maintain accurate rosters <strong>and</strong> attendance records for children enrolled inbefore- <strong>and</strong> after-school enrichment activities.SECTION 6: COL<strong>LA</strong>BORATIONAny LEA participating in the <strong>LA</strong> 4 Prekindergarten Program shall hold meetings tocollaborate with all other governmentally funded providers of early childhood education(such as Head Start) <strong>and</strong> care serving children residing within jurisdiction of the LEA.Privately funded providers of early childhood education <strong>and</strong> enrichment activities thatserve children residing within jurisdiction of the LEA shall be invited to participate inthese meetings.Meetings shall be held for the purpose of discussing common issues <strong>and</strong> establishingmeans to coordinate programs in such a way as to ensure that high quality earlychildhood education programs <strong>and</strong> enrichment activities are available to the maximum37<strong>LA</strong> 4 <strong>Guidelines</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Implementation</strong> H<strong>and</strong>book
