MARKET ANALYSISUNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT – STORRS, CTBackgroundThe <strong>University</strong> of Connecticut is situated in a rural community outside of Hartford, Connecticut.Its medical campus is located approximately 25 miles west of campus, thus all graduate housingremains at the main campus (Storrs). Over the past five years, the on-campus student populationrepresented 72% of the total student population, a rate that is much higher than what is observedat other benchmark institutions. Interviews with <strong>University</strong> staff indicated that many students’ firstpreference is to live on campus. Reasons such as affordability and lack of housing stock offcampus are reasons why students decide to reside on campus.ProjectNorthwood ApartmentsThis complex is comprised of 94 two-bedroom one-bathroom units on the westernedge of campus. Residents of this facility must be full-time graduates who areeither married or single with dependents. In addition, students must hold aminimum of a half-time assistantship during their entire occupancy.Hilltop ApartmentsUndergraduates and graduates reside in the 964-bed community that consists of four-, two-, andone-bedroom apartment units. Graduate students represent 20% of the residentpopulation and have priority reserving the two- and one-bedroom apartments. Unitscome furnished, utilities are included, and meal plans are not required.Graduate ResidencesAmong benchmarking institutions, this facility is the only traditional residence halldedicated to graduates. Its sixteen complexes house 440 graduate students insingle occupancy traditional units. Some undergraduate students live in this facilityto maintain 100% occupancy.SummaryThe <strong>University</strong> of Connecticut offers a variety of unit and community types to graduate students,from family apartments, graduate apartments, and traditional style halls.
