Nominated, constituted and appointed, and by these presents for us, our heirs andsuccessors, do make, assign, nominate, constitute and appoint, our beloved John Lens,Serjeant at Law, and William Meek, Barrister at Law, Masters <strong>of</strong> Arts in our said<strong>University</strong>, and William Frere, Batchelor <strong>of</strong> Arts in our said <strong>University</strong>, and suchthirteen other persons, to be qualified in manner hereafter prescribed, respecting theelection <strong>of</strong> the future Fellows <strong>of</strong> the said <strong>College</strong>, as we shall, after the necessarybuildings for the said <strong>College</strong> shall be erected, by writing under our sign manual,nominate and appoint to be the first and modern Fellows <strong>of</strong> the aforesaid college.AND we do hereby further will, declare and direct, that the said Francis Annesley,Edward Christian, Busick Harwood, John Lens, William Meek, and William Frere,shall, immediately henceforth, commence and be Master, Pr<strong>of</strong>essors, and Fellows, <strong>of</strong>the said <strong>College</strong>; in order to constitute a body corporate, for the several purposes <strong>of</strong>taking possession <strong>of</strong> the estates devised by, and to be purchased pursuant to, the will<strong>of</strong> the said Sir George <strong>Downing</strong>, and <strong>of</strong> administering the revenues there<strong>of</strong>, and <strong>of</strong>superintending the erection <strong>of</strong> the necessary buildings <strong>of</strong> the said college, and for theother necessary purposes; and that the remaining thirteen Fellows <strong>of</strong> the said college,so to be nominated as aforesaid, shall not he nominated, or commence, or becomeFellows <strong>of</strong> the said college, until after the erection <strong>of</strong> the necessary buildings for thesame.who areimmediatelyconstituted abody corporate.AND we do hereby further will, declare, and direct, that the future Masters <strong>of</strong> the saidcollege shall be chosen from amongst those who shall have been Pr<strong>of</strong>essors orFellows <strong>of</strong> the said college, and shall be elected by the Lord Archbishop <strong>of</strong>Canterbury, the Lord Archbishop <strong>of</strong> York, and the Masters <strong>of</strong> St. John's <strong>College</strong> andClare-Hall, in our said university for the time being; and that the future Pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong>the said college shall be elected by the Lord Archbishop <strong>of</strong> Canterbury, the LordArchbishop <strong>of</strong> York, and the Masters <strong>of</strong> St. John's <strong>College</strong> and Clare-Hall, and <strong>of</strong> thesaid intended college, to be called <strong>Downing</strong> <strong>College</strong>, for the time being, from amongpersons qualified in the following manner (that is to say), <strong>The</strong> Law Pr<strong>of</strong>essor shall beMode <strong>of</strong> election,and qualifications<strong>of</strong> the futureMasters andPr<strong>of</strong>essors.xi
