the benefit <strong>of</strong> the said college; or shall be, from time to time, paid, applied, anddisposed <strong>of</strong> in such manner as the Master, Pr<strong>of</strong>essors, and Fellows <strong>of</strong> the said college,for the time being, or the major part <strong>of</strong> them, shall order, direct, or appoint. And it isour will and pleasure that no payment shall be made in respect <strong>of</strong> any such stipends asaforesaid, until the expence <strong>of</strong> the buildings proper for the said college shall be fullyprovided for, by setting apart sufficient funds for that purpose, in such manner as oursaid Court <strong>of</strong> Chancery shall direct.AND we do hereby further will, declare, and direct, that the Pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> the saidcollege shall read such lectures, or courses <strong>of</strong> lectures, in their several departments, asthe Lord Archbishop <strong>of</strong> Canterbury, the Lord Archbishop <strong>of</strong> York, and the Masters <strong>of</strong>St. John's <strong>College</strong> and Clare-Hall, and <strong>of</strong> the said intended college, to be called<strong>Downing</strong> <strong>College</strong>, for the time being, or the major part <strong>of</strong> them, shall, from time totime, order, direct, and appoint; and that care shall be taken, in the statutes <strong>of</strong> the saidcollege, to enforce the reading <strong>of</strong> such lectures by suitable penalties in case <strong>of</strong> anywilful omissions there<strong>of</strong>.Pr<strong>of</strong>essors toread lectures.AND further, we do by these presents, for us, our heirs and successors, order, direct,and appoint, that the said Francis Annesley, so nominated and appointed to be the firstMaster <strong>of</strong> the said college, as herein-before mentioned, and all other person andpersons who shall, from time to time, be nominated, elected, and chosen, into the<strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> the said college, shall, before he, they, or any <strong>of</strong> them, shall beadmitted to the exercise or execution <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> the college aforesaid,take a corporal oath, upon the Holy Evangelists, for the true and faithful execution <strong>of</strong>the said <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Master, and for the faithful discharge <strong>of</strong> the duties there<strong>of</strong>; and shallalso take the oaths provided or prescribed by the laws or statutes <strong>of</strong> this realm, orrequired by the laws, statutes, or ordinances <strong>of</strong> our said university <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>, to betaken by all Masters <strong>of</strong> colleges before the Vice Chancellor <strong>of</strong> our said university forthe time being. And we have also given and granted, and by these presents, for us, ourheirs, and successors, do give and grant to the Vice Chancellor <strong>of</strong> our universityMaster’s oath.xv
