to a greater number of fellows living at any one time than shall be specified in thestatutes.Duration of theclericalFellowships.AND we do hereby further will, declare, and direct, that the two clerical Fellows of thesaid college shall vacate their fellowships by marriage, or by possessing property orecclesiastical preferment of such yearly value as shall be specified in the statutes ofthe said college.Scholars to beadmitted.AND we do hereby further will, declare, and direct, that pupils of the respective ranksof Fellow-commoners, Pensioners and Sizars, be admitted into the said intendedcollege in the same manner as they are admitted into other colleges, in the saiduniversity ; and that they be instructed and educated in law, physic, and such otheruseful learning as is generally taught in other colleges, and that they shall be subjectto the usual academical discipline.A building fundto be set apart,under thedirection of theCourt ofChancery.AND we do hereby further will, declare, and direct, that out of the revenues of the saidcollege there shall be, in the first place, set apart so much as shall be necessary to beapplied in erecting proper buildings for the said college, together with any other fundsapplicable for that purpose, under the direction of our said Court of Chancery; andthat when such buildings shall be completed to the satisfaction of our said court, or aproper fund shall be set apart, under the order of our said court, for that purpose, theMaster, Professors, and Fellows of the said college, shall receive, by and out of theremainder of such revenues, if sufficient for that purpose, after defraying all othernecessary expences and disbursements, the stipends following: that is to say, theyearly stipend to the Master of the said College shall be £600; and the yearly stipendto each of the Professors of the said college £200; and the yearly stipend to each of theFellows of the said college, £100; but if there shall be any deficiency in the revenuesof the said college, in that case the said several stipends shall abate in proportion; andif there shall, at any time, be any surplus of such revenues, after payment of the abovestipends and other disbursements, the same shall accumulate forxiv
the benefit of the said college; or shall be, from time to time, paid, applied, anddisposed of in such manner as the Master, Professors, and Fellows of the said college,for the time being, or the major part of them, shall order, direct, or appoint. And it isour will and pleasure that no payment shall be made in respect of any such stipends asaforesaid, until the expence of the buildings proper for the said college shall be fullyprovided for, by setting apart sufficient funds for that purpose, in such manner as oursaid Court of Chancery shall direct.AND we do hereby further will, declare, and direct, that the Professors of the saidcollege shall read such lectures, or courses of lectures, in their several departments, asthe Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, the Lord Archbishop of York, and the Masters ofSt. John's College and Clare-Hall, and of the said intended college, to be calledDowning College, for the time being, or the major part of them, shall, from time totime, order, direct, and appoint; and that care shall be taken, in the statutes of the saidcollege, to enforce the reading of such lectures by suitable penalties in case of anywilful omissions thereof.Professors toread lectures.AND further, we do by these presents, for us, our heirs and successors, order, direct,and appoint, that the said Francis Annesley, so nominated and appointed to be the firstMaster of the said college, as herein-before mentioned, and all other person andpersons who shall, from time to time, be nominated, elected, and chosen, into theoffice of Master of the said college, shall, before he, they, or any of them, shall beadmitted to the exercise or execution of the office of Master of the college aforesaid,take a corporal oath, upon the Holy Evangelists, for the true and faithful execution ofthe said office of Master, and for the faithful discharge of the duties thereof; and shallalso take the oaths provided or prescribed by the laws or statutes of this realm, orrequired by the laws, statutes, or ordinances of our said university of Cambridge, to betaken by all Masters of colleges before the Vice Chancellor of our said university forthe time being. And we have also given and granted, and by these presents, for us, ourheirs, and successors, do give and grant to the Vice Chancellor of our universityMaster’s oath.xv
