Despiteincreased spending and politicians’ promises, America’s public-education system, once the best in the world, is now fallingand failing the nation’s children.Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education has names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, fivechildren who deserve better education and whose stories make up the engrossing foundation of the film. As he follows ahandful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than encourages, academic growth, Guggenheim undertakesan exhaustive review of public education, surveying “drop-out factories” and “academic sinkholes,” methodically dissectingthe system and its seemingly intractable problems. Davis Guggenheim is widely known as an award-winning documentary filmmaker. The groundbreaking AN INCONVENIENTTRUTH (screened in JIFFest 2006) won Best Documentary Feature in Academy Awards, and IT MIGHT GET LOUD (2008) wasdeclared as “insightful and musically satisfying” by influential website RottenTomatoes.com.
