Staff members invited tomake such appearances should consult their supervisors andthe associate managing editor for news administration or the<strong>de</strong>puty editorial page editor.45. Staff members should not accept invitations to speak wheretheir function is to attract customers to an event primarilyinten<strong>de</strong>d as profit-making.46. Staff members may accept speaking fees, honorariums,expense reimbursement and free transportation only fromeducational or other nonprofit groups for which lobbying andpolitical activity are not a major focus. If a speaking feeexceeds $2,500, the staff member must consult the associatemanaging editor for news administration or the <strong>de</strong>putyeditorial page editor before accepting.4Protecting the Paper’s Neutrality47. Staff members who accept fees, honorariums or expenses forspeaking engagements must file with the associate managingeditor for news administration or the <strong>de</strong>puty editorial pageeditor by January 31 of each year an accounting of theprevious year’s appearances. If their fees total less than $2,500,no annual accounting is required. Fees earned un<strong>de</strong>r Timesauspices for promotional or other approved purposes neednot be inclu<strong>de</strong>d.48. Staff members who write books and want to promotethem must give their supervisor a schedule of proposedappearances. They may accept routine expenses and feesin promotional appearances, but they must make everyeffort to ensure that their appearances conform to the spiritof this co<strong>de</strong> and do not interfere with their responsibilitiesto the paper.
