Staff members invited tomake such appearances should consult their supervisors andthe associate managing editor for news administration or thedeputy editorial page editor.45. Staff members should not accept invitations to speak wheretheir function is to attract customers to an event primarilyintended as profit-making.46. Staff members may accept speaking fees, honorariums,expense reimbursement and free transportation only fromeducational or other nonprofit groups for which lobbying andpolitical activity are not a major focus. If a speaking feeexceeds $2,500, the staff member must consult the associatemanaging editor for news administration or the deputyeditorial page editor before accepting.4Protecting the Paper’s Neutrality47. Staff members who accept fees, honorariums or expenses forspeaking engagements must file with the associate managingeditor for news administration or the deputy editorial pageeditor by January 31 of each year an accounting of theprevious year’s appearances. If their fees total less than $2,500,no annual accounting is required. Fees earned under Timesauspices for promotional or other approved purposes neednot be included.48. Staff members who write books and want to promotethem must give their supervisor a schedule of proposedappearances. They may accept routine expenses and feesin promotional appearances, but they must make everyeffort to ensure that their appearances conform to the spiritof this code and do not interfere with their responsibilitiesto the paper.
