101. Staff members may participate in radio, television or Internetinterviews or discussions, paid or unpaid, that deal witharticles they have written or subjects that figure in the coveragethey provide, edit, package or supervise. Such occasionalappearances must not imply that they carry the sponsorship orendorsement of The Times (unless they do). Staff membersshould be careful about the use of their names and that of thenewspaper in materials promoting the appearances. As acourtesy, they should let their department head know abouttheir plans to appear.102. In deciding whether to make a radio, television or Internetappearance, a staff member should consider its probable toneand content to make sure they are consistent with Timesstandards. Staff members should avoid strident, theatrical forumsthat emphasize punditry and reckless opinion-mongering.Instead, we should offer thoughtful and retrospective analysis.Generally a staff member should not say anything on radio,television or the Internet that could not appear under his orher byline in The Times.103. New York Times Television draws on the paper’s staff inproducing programs for broadcast on networks and channelsowned by outside parties, such as Public Television and theDiscovery Channel. Staff members may not appear onbroadcasts that compete directly with The Times’s own offeringson television or the Internet. They may not accept assignmentsfrom the Times’s TV clients or potential clients without itsapproval. As the paper moves further into these new fields, itsdirect competitors and clients or potential clients willundoubtedly grow in number. If a staff member has any doubtabout the status of a particular program, he or she shouldconsult the associate managing editor for news administrationor the deputy editorial page editor.10Appearing on Broadcast Media104. A Washington reporter who appearedweekly on a television program might soon become moreknown for that program than for work done for The Times.Occasional appearances on the same program would not runthat risk.105.
