Fall Far East06-07<strong>The</strong> <strong>Aquila</strong>Lady Eagles Land in Falcon TerritoryMoving back intothe AA (large school)division after a yearin the A (small school)division is a big challengefor any sport, butthe difference in thelevel of play in volleyballis enormous.However, the LadyEagles volleyball team,after a very successfulseason, embraced thechallenge.At far off SeoulAmerican <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>,home of the Falcons,<strong>Edgren</strong> Lady Eaglesfaced some newteams from the islandof Guam like John F.Kennedy <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>and Guam <strong>High</strong> (bothX-CountryImagine thehottest you have everbeen, now picturehotter than that. Aftertraining a month inweather you could seeyour breath in, <strong>Edgren</strong>Eagles were warmingup for a race whichdetermine who is thebest in the pacific on acourse which was heldon burning hot asphalt.Without the wind attheir back, or the windanywhere, <strong>Edgren</strong> menmatches ended in victoryfor the Eagles).<strong>The</strong>y also faced somefamiliar DODDS Japanfoes like Yokota,Kinnick and Zama.Though there is nofirst, second, or thirdplace trophy in thecase in the main buildingat <strong>Edgren</strong>, the LadyEagles will alwayshave the satisfactionin knowing that theycaused major upsetsto the fourth placeteam, Academy of OurLady of Guam, in poolplay and to the secondplace team, GeorgeWashington <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong>, in tournamentplay.took fourth, and womenran second and tooksixth. With the womenand men’s scorestogether, <strong>Edgren</strong> tooksixth overall. Tired, depressed,and thirsty theteam listened to CoachThibert as he told themthat it all came downto the relay race thefollowing day to bettertheir place.<strong>The</strong> relay racewas comprised of threemiles for each runner.In tournamentplay the kills of outsidehitters, Captain ValerieJones and BrandiPendleton, were excellent.<strong>The</strong> consistentand ace-scoring servesof Maria San Juanand Krystine Horsleyproved difficult toreceive for the defensespecialists of manyschools. Great effortswere also made in theback row by LindseyCannon and CaptainTanya Lara.<strong>The</strong> five seniors of theteam: Captain TanyaLara (D.S.), CaptainValerie Jones (outsidehitter), Lindsey Cannon(D.S.), Maria SanHowever there was atwist. A lady eagle startedoff the race, and ranone point five miles,and hands off the batonto eagle boy partnerwho does the same.He hands it back to thelady eagle, who finishesoff her three miles.<strong>The</strong> boy then ran theirlast loop and finishedthe race. <strong>The</strong> partnersfinish in the followingorder: Chris Tobiereand Jade Thrasher,Juan (D.S.) and KrystineHorsley (setter)should be pleased withtheir performance inthis tournament, andmay they always carrythe fun times of FarEast Volleyball 2006with them on their wayto bigger and bettergames. A word to thewise: watch out nextyear because juniorsKiwanna Clark (hitter),Brandi Pendleton(outside hitter), LissiJohnson (hitter and setter),Samantha Cannon(D.S.) and NorahSweeney (middle hitter)are taking no prisonersin the 07 season.-Norah SweeneyTrey James and AudreyHaltli, Devin Nelsonand Angel Lemon,Tony Angelella and MiaAngelella, and BrandonMassie and HeatherOrtega.With CoachThibert’s advice, “Itdoesn’t matter whichteam’s runner is in frontof you, just pass him,”the <strong>Edgren</strong> Eaglesovertook their opponentsand finished fifthover all.-Devin Nelson
