Saturday, November4th at 7:00 PM, hefollowed through withthat promise when the<strong>Edgren</strong> Eagles wentto the Class A Footballchampionship at homefeild, sending home asad, dethroned OsanAHS.Under a newhead coach, ChristopherWaite, theteam was able to put<strong>Edgren</strong> on the map andachieve one of the bestrecords for football atEHS. During the firstquarter, Zach Latimore(Jr.) scored the firsttouchdown of the gameon a run to make thescore 6-0, but wasinjured in this play andcame out due to anankle sprain.Returning quarterback,Josh Ray(Jr.), along with thehelp from center KevinMcDonald(Jr.), wasable to make a 26 yardtouchdown pass toVaughn Junchaya (Sr.)to put the score at 17-0. However,Harwell succeededover his opponentand closed the matchat 7-7, 40-0. Although,the Eagles lost to theSeoul American Falconsin the third match,the Eagles survivedthe consolation round,winning it and placing5th overall in the teamdivision.-Jordan Spencer<strong>The</strong> Elephant ManDreamSceneVibrant red lights compliment the intensedream scene between Merrick and Treves.Every year, theEHS Drama Departmentperforms a fallshow. This is usuallyan activity in whichstudents in gradesseven through twelvecan participate andFinalPose<strong>The</strong> EHS Tennis Team poses trophies and medalsin hand with Rick Ninete, the owner of thetennis complex where the tournament took place.hone their acting skills.This year’s play howeverwas limited tohigh school students.“<strong>The</strong> Elephant Man”,a drama by BernardPomerance tackledsuch issues as prejudice,inhumane practices,and cruelty towardspeople deemed as“different.” Set in VictorianEngland, thestory chronicles thelife of John Merrick, aman born with a disorderthat rendered himdeformed and incapableof expressingemotion, and his riseto a mildly-acceptedmember of society.<strong>Edgren</strong>’s Drama Departmentperformed onthe nights of October27th and 28th to largecrowds. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Aquila</strong>Winners in OkinawaDuring the weekof Far East Journalismheld in Kadena,Okinawa, <strong>Edgren</strong>Journalists participatedin numerous competitions,only severalstudents walked awaywith prizes.Seniors ThomasHarwell and VictoriaBenson teamed up todominate the YearbookLayout Challenge. InFE Journalism: Whats it all about?Many studentsand teachers don’tknow much aboutthe Far East JournalismConference heldeach year. FEJ is agreat way for ambitiousstudent writers,photographers andlayout directors to learnmore about their forte’.Students attending thistrip are staff membersof their schools yearbookand newspaperteam. This year, theconference was held inOkinawa, finishing upits two year cycle. <strong>The</strong>conference took placeover a three day period;full of various learningsessions, studytrips and challenges.<strong>The</strong> conferthiscompetition studentswere given theopportunity to usephotos to create abrand new creativeyearbook layout designthat would bedazzle thejudges.Senior DeniseReyes and JuniorStephanie Wehrungentered a similar competition,the NewspaperLayout Challenge. <strong>The</strong>ence is a vast learningexperience; it allowsstudents and yearbookadvisors to gaina plethora of knowledgefor their schoolsyearbook. Many ofthe learning sessionswere dedicated to theproduction of a qualityyearbook. Learningsessions ranged fromhow to write effectivecaptions to showcasingideas and themes fromaward winning yearbooks.All that staffsneed to know to producea superior yearbookcan be learnedat this conference.Strong-minded studentwriters had the opportunityto take a smallpeek into the career ofpair received thebronze medal in thecategory, a two-hourcompetition focused onstructure and design ofan impromptu two-pagenewspaper layout.Senior NielsJohnson and JoshMcDermaid created apowerful political cartoonexpressing the betrayalof both the UnitedStates and Koreans.Journalism. Many professionalspresentedlearning sessions andconveyed how life of awriter, editor or journalistcan be.Competitionwas fierce as schoolswere pinned againsteach other in variouscompetitions. Competitionincluded: timedlayout design (yearbookand newspaper),photo contest (fivecategories), featureand article writing, andcaption challenges.Of course, being inOkinawa, this conferencewas just as muchplay as work. Studentswere given a chanceto explore and experiencethe vibrant cultureThis humorous displayof creativity landed thepair the bronze medalin this highly competitivecatrgory.Thomas Harwellwon the silver medalfor his one-hour featureessay on Patrick GilRoberts. Harwell interviewedand observedRoberts as a part of thefeature writing competition.-Thomas Harwellof Okinawa and weretaken on study trips.By title, these trips notonly included bundlesof fun and excitement,they produced materialfor a student to use ina challenge. Whethersubmitting a photofor the photo contestor writing a “CulturalCoverage Article” studytrips had it all. Far EastJournalism is one ofthe best-kept secretsamong students.-Denise Reyes


Fall Far East06-07<strong>The</strong> <strong>Aquila</strong>Lady Eagles Land in Falcon TerritoryMoving back intothe AA (large school)division after a yearin the A (small school)division is a big challengefor any sport, butthe difference in thelevel of play in volleyballis enormous.However, the LadyEagles volleyball team,after a very successfulseason, embraced thechallenge.At far off SeoulAmerican <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>,home of the Falcons,<strong>Edgren</strong> Lady Eaglesfaced some newteams from the islandof Guam like John F.Kennedy <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>and Guam <strong>High</strong> (bothX-CountryImagine thehottest you have everbeen, now picturehotter than that. Aftertraining a month inweather you could seeyour breath in, <strong>Edgren</strong>Eagles were warmingup for a race whichdetermine who is thebest in the pacific on acourse which was heldon burning hot asphalt.Without the wind attheir back, or the windanywhere, <strong>Edgren</strong> menmatches ended in victoryfor the Eagles).<strong>The</strong>y also faced somefamiliar DODDS Japanfoes like Yokota,Kinnick and Zama.Though there is nofirst, second, or thirdplace trophy in thecase in the main buildingat <strong>Edgren</strong>, the LadyEagles will alwayshave the satisfactionin knowing that theycaused major upsetsto the fourth placeteam, Academy of OurLady of Guam, in poolplay and to the secondplace team, GeorgeWashington <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong>, in tournamentplay.took fourth, and womenran second and tooksixth. With the womenand men’s scorestogether, <strong>Edgren</strong> tooksixth overall. Tired, depressed,and thirsty theteam listened to CoachThibert as he told themthat it all came downto the relay race thefollowing day to bettertheir place.<strong>The</strong> relay racewas comprised of threemiles for each runner.In tournamentplay the kills of outsidehitters, Captain ValerieJones and BrandiPendleton, were excellent.<strong>The</strong> consistentand ace-scoring servesof Maria San Juanand Krystine Horsleyproved difficult toreceive for the defensespecialists of manyschools. Great effortswere also made in theback row by LindseyCannon and CaptainTanya Lara.<strong>The</strong> five seniors of theteam: Captain TanyaLara (D.S.), CaptainValerie Jones (outsidehitter), Lindsey Cannon(D.S.), Maria SanHowever there was atwist. A lady eagle startedoff the race, and ranone point five miles,and hands off the batonto eagle boy partnerwho does the same.He hands it back to thelady eagle, who finishesoff her three miles.<strong>The</strong> boy then ran theirlast loop and finishedthe race. <strong>The</strong> partnersfinish in the followingorder: Chris Tobiereand Jade Thrasher,Juan (D.S.) and KrystineHorsley (setter)should be pleased withtheir performance inthis tournament, andmay they always carrythe fun times of FarEast Volleyball 2006with them on their wayto bigger and bettergames. A word to thewise: watch out nextyear because juniorsKiwanna Clark (hitter),Brandi Pendleton(outside hitter), LissiJohnson (hitter and setter),Samantha Cannon(D.S.) and NorahSweeney (middle hitter)are taking no prisonersin the 07 season.-Norah SweeneyTrey James and AudreyHaltli, Devin Nelsonand Angel Lemon,Tony Angelella and MiaAngelella, and BrandonMassie and HeatherOrtega.With CoachThibert’s advice, “Itdoesn’t matter whichteam’s runner is in frontof you, just pass him,”the <strong>Edgren</strong> Eaglesovertook their opponentsand finished fifthover all.-Devin Nelson
