AquilaVolume 3 Issue 1 Page 1theBack to School EditionUnity Leads to Dominance for Edgren FootballA Key to SuccessBy Kevin McDonaldUnity isn’t a word heard too often when a sport like football ismentioned, but it was unity that garnered the Eagles a dominatingvictory over the Kinnick Red Devils this past Friday night. TheEagles, who lost several starters from last year’s team, had to getto know a whole set of brand new faces and reacquaint themselveswith some of the old ones. Losing starters like fullback David Leh andlinebackers Darryn Brown and Gary Adams put the team in questionas to how a repeat performance of the Class “A” Far East FootballChampionship could be achieved. Even with new students PCSing toMisawa, it was still difficult to see what the team would be like aftersuch losses.Once the pads came on, however, it was apparent that the talentand potential were certainly there. New faces on the team were obviouslyready to perform while some veterans of the team stepped uptoto assume new roles. New additions to the team include: middle linebacker,Luke Nelson; tailback, Jacque Moton; lineman, Zack Kiester;and cornerback, Aaron Gomez. Returnees include: fullback, AndrewBlankenship, linebacker, Drew Holder; lineman, Deonte Sifuentes;quarterback, Zach Latimore; and tailback, Josh McDonald. With bothold and new players, it was a challenge to learn to play as a team. Butas the 20-7 win over Kinnick shows, the team did come together in ahuge way. What about thatpromotion in JROTC? Perhaps you need them for NJHS or NHS, well, good news, Misawa always needsvolunteers.Although summer is over and you now have homework and that part-time job flipping burgers at thebowling alley, there are still many opportunities to work in your volunteer hours that are needed. Highschool students can be seen at the BX, the Club, and even at the Gas Station and Auto Shop, however,Misawa really needs more students to step up and take the responsibilities of a volunteer position. This base offers students many ways that both the community and the student can benefit from puttingin their hours. SportsVolume 3 Issue 1 Back to School EditionPage 2edgrenReady, Set, Run!!Cross Country 2007By Angel LemenAn old season ends and a new one begins. It is the same with all sports, but especiallyfor cross country. Cross country isn’t just asport that gets you into shape, or gets you outof school for a day, it’s much more. Our teamlike every other team in school has to grow, and even though we lost some members ofour family we still have thirty runners to getus through the year. We even have returningmembers Jeniffer Stryd, Nicole McNabb, AngelLemen, Parry Drapper, and Chase Grant. But it’s time to extend our family and give ahelping hand to some of the new people. Withnew people coming in, people who have beenrunning before have to help the new runnersadjust. Third year runner and senior NicoleMcNabb says, “It will definitely be difficult forall our runners to get into shape, especially thenew ones, but I think if they stick with it they’llbe very happy in the end.”One of the newest members of our crosscountry team, junior Erin Nicolai, said, “Crosscountry has been a great experience so far. Iknow that the work will be long and exhausting, but I’m looking forward to improving myrunning and getting closer to the team.” Withpositive attitudes and hard work, cross countrycompetitions and the Far East Championshipwill be a piece of cake.Football [continued from page 1]Edgren Girls VolleyballReady to PlayBy Victoria LivelyOnce again, school is in session and the volleyballteam is kicking off the new school year the right way. With only a few returning players to add to the grandtotal of thirty-five girls currently attending practice, it willdefinitely be an interesting year full of hard work andcompetition.Varsity Coach Mrs. Richardson and Junior VarsityCoach Mr. Edmonds already have a strategy for dividingthe players to improve the team all-around.“We made the decision to keep everyone who triedout so that we can help them gain experience for lateryears. It has been found that girls who are cut duringtry-outs tend not to attempt playing the sport againthatis not what we want. In order for this to work, wehave created three teams: Varsity, Junior Varsity, andthe Green and Gold team,” Mrs. Richardson explained.“With the potential this team has,” she continued,“and as long as the girls focus on playing and doingwhat they are instructed- no questions asked- we willbe able to have a great year.”During their first away game against Yashima HighSchool on September 1st several weaknesses amongthe team, such as serving, receiving, and communication, were revealed. Team captions Norah Sweeny,Lissi Johnson, and Kiwanna Clark, who are known fortheir great leadership, readily look forward to improvingon such things by pulling the team together.Come out and help support the Lady Eagles!“We worked on progressing together as a team and we are taking each game as it comes,” HeadCoach Waite said about the team and the season. When asked, most players on the team commented on unity and how the team has come together. For team members, unity and relying on each other to be there is a predominant theme this year. Some players even said that this year’s Eagle football team was now an official contender judging bythe way they played together last Friday. Robert D. Edgren students and staff can only expect moreand more success from an Eagle team that is as self-confident as this year’s team. Good luck Eagles!

It’s also great because we’re going tohave a lot of money for cool stuff this year,” commentedRoxxi Henson, an active senior, volleyballplayer and JROTC cadet on her participation at thisyear’s Air Show. The morning of September 2ndbegan with light rain and overcast skies; bad newsfor the annual Misawa Air Festival that would startlater that day. Even though patrons were aware ofthe likelihood of rain and bad visibility, they linedup in droves at the gates of the flight line to perusethe booths and get good seats to watch the fighterpilots’ daring maneuvers. The sun came out as mid-day approached, thecrowd grew bigger and bellies grew empty, evidencedby the fact that Edgren sold all nine hundredcakes that were made by students.Edgren has a long tradition of taking advantageof the unbelievably large crowds and sweet teethof Air Show goers by selling home made cakes toraise money for Edgren’s activities. We’ve put out a theme suggestionbox to dig up some ideas and engage allof Edgren in the brainstorming process.”Mr. Cannon has been the Student Body sponsorfor the past six years. “It’s a lot of work, butthe outcome is worth it. We have a motivatedgroup, and we’re going to have a lot of fun.” He’sright about that - it is going to be a lot of work! With only three Student Body Officers this year,we are going to have to put in a lot hours ofhours toward an amazing Homecoming! Each year Edgren has a Homecoming parade. It gives our class officers and athletes a chanceto be recognized. “Float decorating is definitelythe best,” says Emely, “it gives each class an opportunityto show off all the work they’ve done.”The parade is also a way of involving the rest ofMisawa.[Continued on Page 4]Volunteering [continued from page 1]First, the places you can volunteer include, but are not limited to PAWS (the homeless Animal Shelter),The Red Cross, The Library, and the Family Support Center. They are also looking for babysittersand young adults who do yard work to help out the families of the deployed. If you just drop by, youcan also pick up the paperwork needed for volunteer positions that will work around your scheduleand the ones that will register you as a volunteen. This paper work can be picked up at the WakasaTeen Center where you can also put the hours into the Yes Program, which gives you money for college,or even put it towards making you the Youth of the Year. You can find out more information onthe programs by dropping by the Teen Center.Depending on when you can work and where you can work, Misawa’s organizations can place youwith a group of fellow volunteers or a dedicated staff who will make you feel both at home and appreciated;also, keep in mind that some volunteer jobs allow you to earn job experience and bullets forother applications and awards.

updatesVolume 3 Issue 1 Back to School EditionPage 4ehsFeeling Organized?Edgren’s New PlannersBy Erin NicolaiEdgren eagles start the school year with anexciting new challenge - organization. This year,in an effort to help students stay organized, theEdgren Booster Club in conjunction with theMOSC provided funding to purchase a schoolplanner for all students grades 7 -10. Whilemany students have their own methods of keepingon top of things. such as pushing homeworkto the depths of a backpack and forgetting aboutit, waiting until arriving in class the next day tofeverishly begin the assignment, or the alwayspopular “writing-on-your-hand” approach, theplanners will offer a new tactic.Edgren had official planners previously, but inthe past three years students and teachers havehad to fend off disorganization on their own. However, this year, Mrs. Sledge spearheaded theeffort to get the school planners. She and theother teachers supported this organizational toolthat would help teach students this skill early, because,as she stated, “Half the battle to successis organization.”It certainly seems like students will win thisbattle with the aid of the planners. The middleschool planners, with cover art by KatheryneOrdillas who is currently a freshman, and the highschool planners with cover art by Mister Murphywho is currently a junior, contain pages filled withquotes, advice, interesting facts, stickers, andmost importantly - room for assignments. Theplanners are sure to catch a student’s attention,so hopefully, when students are faced with thegrueling choice of throwing an assignment outwith the highest hope that a squirrel might eat itor writing a note in their planner, the choice willbecome obvious.Games ScheduleSeptember 14th and 15thGirls’ Volleyballvs Kinnick[Friday and Saturday]Tennisvs Kinnick[Friday and Saturday]Come support Edgren teams this weekendand good luck to the away teams!!Air Show Cake Sale[Continued from page 3]trips coming up later in the season.Groups like National Honor Society,JROTC, the wrestling team, the underclassmenand the cross country team also got in on theact.
