Beyond the horizon

Jeff Ashby, who earned a master’s degree in aviation systems from the University of Tennessee
Space Institute at Tulhahoma (UTSI), was the pilot of the space shuttle Columbia when it lifted
off last July 9, taking a powerful new NASA observatory into orbit.
“The closer it gets to launch, the busier my days are,” Ashby said during a break from training.
Ashby’s typical day before launch included a number of science lectures, medical training, camera
training, and a lot of time in NASA’s shuttle simulator.
