<strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong> <strong>Text</strong> <strong>Messaging</strong><strong>Clickatell</strong>’s two-<strong>way</strong> messaging functionalitylets you have dynamic text conversations withyour customers, suppliers and employees.From Application toMobile, and back!<strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong> messaging is messaging from anapplication to a mobile handset, and viceversa.When two-<strong>way</strong> messaging is discussed,there are two concepts that have to be understood:Mobile terminated (MT) messagingand mobile originated (MO) messaging.CLICKATELL’S CENTRAL PLATFORM<strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong> messaging through <strong>Clickatell</strong>’scentral platform requires the completion of atwo-<strong>way</strong> number application form.Follow the easy 4-Step process to apply foryour number:Note: <strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong> messaging APIs can be usedin conjunction with one-<strong>way</strong> APIs that arealready in placeStep 1 : Find out if you need along code or short code as your‘from’ number …Screen A : Activate Communicator 2MT messaging refers to messages that aresent from an application, and terminate onthe recipient’s handset. In other words, theystop there.MO messaging refers to messages thathave originated from a mobile handset, andwill be received by an application.Activating<strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong> <strong>Messaging</strong>Short CodesA short code is a 3 to 6 digit number thatis memorable and easily recognisable. It isthe crème de la crème of sender IDs and istypically used for messaging campaigns thatrequire great visibility.Example: XYZ Toy Store is giving customersthe chance to win a rare collector’s item trainset. To enter, customers only need to text themodel of the train to the short code 554321.Read more about short codes on our ‘ShortCode Coverage’ page.Screen B : Apply for your two-<strong>way</strong> numberCLICKATELL’S COMMUNICATOR 2Activating two-<strong>way</strong> messaging is easy.Here’s what you need to do:• Log into Communicator 2• Go to the ‘<strong>Messaging</strong>’ tab.• Under ‘My <strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong>’ on the left, click‘Activate’. All rights reserved.Long NumbersA long number can be 10-15 characters inlength, but may be more cost-effective than ashort code. Navigate to <strong>Clickatell</strong>’s ‘StandardCoverage Using MO’ page and select thecountry and region (where applicable) thatyour messages will be sent to.Example: Dr. G. Heart uses SMS to sendappointment reminders to his patients. Messagesreceived from him are al<strong>way</strong>s from the longnumber, +447771234567. Regular patients havesaved this number as “G. <strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong> <strong>Text</strong> <strong>Messaging</strong>Once the tables have updated, determinewhich long number range (from the top row)will suit your messaging requirements.Example: Jim wants to send text messagesto 100 of his best customers in the UnitedKingdom. They are located on the followingnetworks: Hutchison 3G UK Ltd, O2, Orange,T-mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone.From the table Jim determines that he canregister a +44[A] number to reach customerson the necessary networks. But, if healso registers a +44[B] number, he’ll be ableto get better rates on messages sent to O2,Orange and Vodafone.With this is mind, Jim registers both numbersand receives cost-effective messagingacross the United Kingdom.Step 2 : Determine what yourrental and monthly subscriptionfees will be.The setup and monthly rental fees for longnumbers are listed on the <strong>Two</strong>-Way Costspage. Short code setup and monthly rentalfees can be found on the Shortcode Costspage.Step 3 : Apply for your<strong>Two</strong>-<strong>way</strong> number…Log into your <strong>Clickatell</strong> Centralaccount, and select ‘Manage myProducts’ (see screen B)Click on ‘<strong>Two</strong>-Way Application’ under‘Application Forms’ (see screen B)Select your API product. Remember,only the HTTP/S, SMPP, FTP andSOAP APIs can do two-<strong>way</strong> messaging.(see screen C)Select the Country you wish to send to.(see screen C)Using the results from Step 1 and Step2 above, choose the Setup Type that’sbest for your business. (see screen C)Choose the Services that apply to yourmessaging campaign. If they aren’t inthe list, just fill them into the text box.(see screen C)Read the Terms and Conditions. Youcan agree to them by selecting thecheck-box. (see screen C)Click ‘Next’ (see screen C)Enter your expected inbound andoutbound Message Volumes.(see screen D)Select the Start and End dates of yourcampaign. (see screen D)Click on ‘Complete the Application’.Step 4 : Complete thepayment process to finalizeyour application.Once the application process has beencompleted, click on ‘Central Home’ on thetop menu. A new block will show on yourCentral Home dashboard entitled ‘<strong>Two</strong>-WayNumber Status’.
