Ruwais refinery expansion project, Abu DhabiClient: International Bechtel Company LtdWe prepared the HSEIA for the front end engineering design phase of the Ruwais refineryexpansion (RRE) project. The project involved the design of a new refinery at Ruwais, AbuDhabi, to produce high value polymer grade propylene and traditional ‘fuels’ productsfrom Murban blend crude oil feedstock. The HSEIA involved the preparation of anEnvironmental Impact Assessment and a range of safety studies.A key component of the EIA was a three dimensional mathematical, hydrodynamic anddispersion modelling study of the Ruwais area which was used to evaluate the variationin sea water temperature at the sub-sea inlet to the RRE Sea Water System, and thetemperature and pH dispersion characteristics resulting from the discharge of the returncooling water to the Ruwais near-shore environment via the RRE cooling water outfall.54
