S E M A 2 0 1 0 L A S V E G A Sby Dan Rowland and Bill Keegan, SVR MemberEverything you ever hear about the SEMA (SpecialtyEquipment Manufacturers Association) show in Las Vegasis more than likely true. More cars, more wheels and tires, more of any kind of car bling and foo-foo than you canimagine, and oh! ALL the pretty girls in Las Vegas to attractattention to and individualize more that 1600 displays inthousands and thousands of square feet. Bill and I spent 2½ days and may not have seen all of the three great halls andthe multitude of outside displays. We arrived Tuesday afternoon, registered our “Drifter” presspasses and managed to see about ½ of one three great halls. We had guest passes to the MONSTER parking lot partyat 4:30 – all the food and drinkwas free—and passes to get backin to the hall which closes at 5:00to see the private unveiling (forthe press) of the ABT AUDI R8---lots of carbon fiber, suspensionstiffening and beaucouphorsepower. With over 100,000 people there for the week every cab wasbooked as was every hotel and restaurant. Waiting in linefor things was the norm. We did manage to get up close to afew of the booths by getting there ahead of the crowds. Youmight recognize Mario here at one of the Mothers booths—he drew a lot of attention. Besides all the girls there werecelebrities everywhere. Car drivers and designers like Foose, and we managed to meet Noel Lee from Monster Cable ashe introduced his joint venture with California Customs.Their JV will announce a new line of car care products inthe spring. I snagged a sample of a chamois like absorbentmicrofiber drying towel that works better than anything Ihave ever used. The variety of products wasunbelievable. If you can imagineit—someone makes it and sells it.One entire section was devoted tofasteners, ones to exhaust, paint, suspensions, and, of course ,one entire hall to wheels and tires. That is what this show was originally about-- wheels andtires-- and eventually developed after 46 years to what it istoday. Here are a couple of the Porsche wheel enhancementoptions we viewed. There were many but most seemedfocused on the center lock option on the GT3 and Turbo.More aftermarket options are in the works as well.Every vendor, when asked about what they had for Porsche, referred to their catalog. From Bilstein to K & N, all hadPorsches in their sights. We passed the PCA interviewing theEscort boys in their display on the way to meet with Meguiarsand see their “wrap” demonstration. What was surprising were the new water based paint productsincluding colored chrome. Along with the new “Wrap”technology and new set of wheels you can change the color, texture and appearance of a car in less than a day. Wewatched gloss black go to flat white with carbon fiber hoodand roof—all with wrap like yousee on stick-on advertisements. Many manufacturers had overlaysin process including 3M andMeguiars. We saw paints that look one colorhead on and a different color a fewfeet away. Wheels as big as 30”were not uncommon. Saw onewith a 385 X 15 X 30 tire. Over 15 inches in width with therubber only 2” tall on the wheel. Saw the same wheels andtires later on a Hummer in the DUB display outside.Tuesday we got to ride in the new FORD SVT F150 out inthe parking lot. Lots of screeching, tire smoke and air time.Picture is a demo of FORD off road trucks on the samecourse where we rode the SVTs. After the ride we attendedEntertainment Arts (EA) debut of SPEED II, their latest andgreatest simulation software.Spectacular and versatile, withmany tracks included plus theoption to design your own anddrive about 30 different cars. Here is a sample of one ofthe other off road vehicles ondisplay. Everything seemed larger than life. There were 50plus mustangs and many show cars impossible to describe. Ifyou ever have the chance SEMA is well worth the visit, plan acouple of days and your most comfortable shoesIt is impossible in this short article to detail all the things wesaw while at SEMA. It certainly was an experience worthrepeating. Bill and I agreed, however, it probably isn’t an everyyear event. We were beat from walking and, hard as it is tobelieve, we had automotive overload.Page 2the drifter - Sacramento Valley Region - Porsche Club of America - www.derporsche.net
