A Look BackFrom theDriver’s SeatBy Jeff KinderPresidentMay was a fabulous time for activities andgetting together with your Porsche friendsin SVR. We had activities on every weekend. We had Marque Madness to start themonth. The next weekend came the drivingtour and BBQ at Stephan & Vicky Childs’home. One might be hard pressed to finda more interesting collection of Porsches, with Stephan ready to give the history ofeach one. The next day brought what musthave been interesting to watch: an autocrossin the rain. (Okay, it actually got rained out,so you will just have to go to the next one.)Shortly following was another evening forSVR at the Towe Auto Museum. This isalways a treat for me to look at the cars. The displays are most creative. If you havenot been there, you absolutely have to go.Oh yes, there was something else of interestthat night: our sendoff of long-time Porschefriend Phil Lawrence to West Virginia—ourloss and their gain. An SVR/Zone rally ranthe next weekend, followed by the “worldfamous” San Simeon Tour. This year, like lastyear, included a night tour of Hearst Castle.Volunteers dressed in period costume roamedabout adding additional flavor to the tour. Our guide brought a special touch. Ratherthan focusing on the artwork or the construction,he painted a scene for us, taking us backin time, describing people we might meet andtalk with and activities we might participatein as part of that world. And the drivingwasn’t bad either! The month finished outwith a Driver Education (DE) weekend.Wow, if you are not joining us on some ofthese events, you are missing out!In early June, we returned to what hasbecome a favorite stop for a dinner meeting:The Village Green Bar and Grille. ThePCA SVR Zone 7 Concours in conjunctionwith the Shriners Concours followed on theweekend. As always, this was a spectacularevent. The new location at Mather workedout well. Near the end of the month was theSVR Chocolate tour. Sorry for those of youwho missed it! And for a very lucky few, themonth ended with the 50 th anniversary ofParade.A Look AheadIn July, SVR has a multi-day tour to Mammoth—lotsof driving, good scenery, you haveto go! In August, most of you know aboutthe PCA National event being held herein California called “Escape…to the WineCountry.” This has been nicknamed a “miniParade”, with all of the flavor of its nationalnamesake, sans competition. It’s more of apurely social event, but on a national level. It’s not too late to join in. With more touring, autocross, rally and DE coming up, this maybe one of our better years for activities. Last, but not least, of the majors is Mendocino. Inyears before, this was an every-other-2-yearevent. It became so popular that we just hadto do it every year. Beginning with an enjoyabledrive through wine country, and endingon Sunday, with lots of fun and friends inbetween, life just cannot get any better.Other Regions will be running otheractivities as well. Please check your Drifter orour web site for information. Speaking of ourweb site, the front page changes frequently.Visit http://www.derporsche.net/ to find outif your car has appeared. There are still more opportunities for daytours on the weekends. Have a favorite spotto get away to that you would like to sharewith others? Want to get to know more peoplein your Club? There is a way. Organizea day tour there for your Porsche friends. Itis not all that much work to do and is greatfun. Though it may seem a little daunting atfirst, we have many experienced tour leaderswho would be willing to provide advice orhelp out with the planning and execution ofthe tour.Be sure to sign up early for these eventsto make sure you can get in on the fun!At the next event you attend, pleasethank the people who have made the effortto provide you a fun activity.Help Needed and FoundAs of this writing, we have filled two of ourremaining open positions (for this year).Helen Ashuckian has volunteered tobe our new Rally Chair. Hooray for Helen! She brings with her many successful years ofrally experience and some fun ideas. Thanks,Helen!New members Nicolas & Lindsey Harriganhave stepped forward to take over asNewsletter Editors. The Hoffmanns willwrite more on this in The Finish Line. Thanks, Nicolas and Lindsey! We still need someone to take over fromMike Willis, who has been doing a greatjob as our interim Webmaster for these lastfew months. If you’re a web professional orhobbyist, or want to become one, this is agreat opportunity to show off your talentsand help out your Club.4 The DrifterCRABThis year we decided to take a break fromSVR’s biggest annual event. CRAB typicallyincludes a Friday night welcoming party, concours, rally, autocross, gymkhana, winetour, Saturday night crab feed, and a SundayBBQ. You could call the entire event agathering. It has been called “the only annualZone 7 multi-region, multi-event weekendevent.” Impressed yet? You should be; it is justplain good-old-fashioned Porsche fun.We are looking for someone to chair thisevent for next year. We have many previouschairs and experienced workers who are readyto help out by chairing and working differentparts of CRAB; they just need a leader. If youare interested in becoming our next CRABchair, please contact me. Drifting BackBy Larry Wilson,SVR Member30 Years Ago (July 1975)President Dan Boone complained that attendanceat the monthly dinner meetingshad dwindled from 125 at the Januarymeeting to half that in June. He isolatedthe cause to increased dinner prices, as evidencedby the $8.50 price tag for the Junestuffed pork chop dinner at Stroh’s NeptuneTable on South Land Park Drive. If thatwasn’t bad enough, Charles Krug wine wasgoing for an outrageous $3.00 per bottle(three-buck Chuck?). The July 13 Zone7 autocross by Monterey Bay Region washeld at the Salinas airport. The July 20 Porsche People’s PotluckPicnic & Auction at Gibson Ranch, withproceeds to the Sacramento Program forPreschool Retarded, also featured thelegendary, if not epic, 356ers versus 911owners volleyball battle. Pat Kincaid andJoe Wright were the co-chairs. The auction, with Bob Schleh as auctioneer, broughtin $258 for the Pre-School kids. As usual, the 356ers lead by Jim Karver were moreskilled at volleyball and won; their cars alsowent faster and their wives were prettier.Ken Fielding (911) and Wyn Robertson(356C) each won their class in theconcours d’elegance during the 20 th PorscheParade in Seattle, July 27 through August1. Other SVR members who trophied atParade events included Arnold O’Shields,Harvey Cain, Trish O’Shields, Fred Myeron,Nancy Myeron, Larry Wilson, MichaelPeters, Mary Peters, Clint deWitt, and Connie Farlinger. Arnold & TrishO’Shields took home-movies at the Parade.Do they still have the film? The greatsalmon bake at Blake Island was easily thehighlight of this Parade. At the final victorybanquet, 38 SVR members consumed25 bottles of wine. SVR was second to thehost region with the most cars (21) in attendance.20 Years Ago (July 1985)SVR members showed a big turnout at the30 th Porsche Parade at Costa Mesa, June 30through July 6. SVR just missed making asweep of the rally. J. Toney and John Cleverwon their third Parade rally in a row (with243 total rally cars) by taking the ExpertClass with a total error of 0.14 minutes overan eight-leg event. Ray & Sara Clementswon the Navigational Class with Kirk& Linda Bradford in 18 th position andHarvey Cain and Connie Farlinger placedsecond in the 180-car Unequipped Classwith Larry & Pat Wilson coming in 25 th(last trophy position). The Weddles andSiegners also ran the rally. Ann Lawrenceand Dave Marek scored in the art contest, and Sara Clements won a second-place trophyin the tech quiz. At the Westin Hotelpool, Art Seeger introduced Larry Wilsonto Derek Bell as one Le Mans winner toanother. Autocross trophies went to SueMcGlumphy, Pat Wilson, and Larry Wilson. Both Harvey Cain and Kirk Bradfordwon a set of tires.According to Bob Jacobson, many SVRmembers attended the July 19-20 PorscheSuper Tech Weekend, hosted by Sierra NevadaRegion and chaired by Dave Eckert. The event included a Friday evening registrationparty at the Nugget Hotel, SaturdayPCNA tech session on the new 928S and944 Turbo cars at the Porsche Cars NorthAmerica preparation and delivery centerin Reno, and finally an evening gourmetItalian dinner back at the Nugget with TomCriesa, PCNA vice-president, as keynotespeaker. The 4 th Annual Tahoe Tour & Cruise,July 27-28, co-chaired by Ron & SallyBoeck and Rod & Kathy Chandler, led 73 cars representing eight PCA regionsthrough the beautiful foothills andbreathtaking Sierra Nevada to a luncheoncruise on the Tahoe Queen, and then overSpooner Summit to Carson City for a fulldresswestern style dude ranch barbecue anddancing at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion. At dinner many demonstrated theirskill in hanging a spoon from their nose. Then it was on to the Mother Lode Inn forrest (or drinking the bottle of champagnedonated by OK Tires to each car registeredat the Inn). Some recovered the next day atWally’s Hot Springs Resort. Tour monitors(Allen & Dolores Weddle, Mike & VickiWillis, Sara & Ray Clements) helped keepthe group organized.10 Years Ago (July 1995)Abby Runs Again, this time on July 9, gaveZone 7 rally competitors another shot atthe perennial SVR time and distance rallywith Abby the wonder-dog as rallymaster.Abby, with help from her master RichardWetzel, took 12 rally teams to visit herfavorite towns of Zamora and Dunnigan.Workers included Dave & Dolores Johnson,Delores McKinnon, Rik Larson,Phillip Marks, and Pat & Larry Wilson.SVR medalists included Jessica & J. Toney(3 rd , Expert Equipped), Ron & Sally Boeck(3 rd , Expert Unequipped), and Tina & JohnMurphy (1 st , Novice).Drifter editor Mike Willis reported onthe July 15 Hog Island Oyster Tour chaired,by Bob Brewer, and said, “the tour wasexcellent, we all had a blast on the beach, and it was like being sixteen again,” whichno doubt piqued reader curiosity aboutwhat really happened on that beach to makeMike’s memory go back that far?Patti & Jerry Thomas hosted the July21 Dinner Meeting at their home andturned it into a pool party with food cateredby the BBQ Express. A billiards challengewas also a big hit of the evening. Thosecaptured by a Phil Lawrence photo in TheDrifter having a great time were Sherry &Rick Luttrell, Phillip Marks, Herb & JanHoover, Pat & Larry Wilson, and Jerry’spet pig.The Drifter5

The DrifterThe SocialSceneBy Julia LynnSocial DirectorTouring season is finally here. At last wehave great weather to get your Porscheout of the garage and onto the road. Mikeand Emily Willis hosted the San SimeonTour in May and it was a wonderful time. This was my first long tour and I had afabulous time. We had a great drive downto Hollister to our picnic spot, and everyonebrought a lunch and got to know eachother better while enjoying some goodfood and company. Then we parted offinto two groups—the “fast” group and the“not-so-fast” group. Now that doesn’t meanwe were wimps (I guess you know whichgroup I went in), just slightly slower! JeffKinder was kind enough to lead our groupand it was a very fun drive—a few too manypot holes to dodge, but otherwise greeat!Once we arrived in San Simeon, we hadan informal get together at the CourtesyInn and had some food and wine. Somewent on to dinners and some called thatdinner. Everyone had Saturday to winetaste, sightsee and visit neighboring towns. At five o’clock Saturday night we got togetherfor our Club dinner and met up atHearst Castle for the evening tour. What aspectacular place. I hadn’t been there sinceI was thirteen years old … just 10 years …no, 20 … no, 30 years ago! I think our busdriver, who took us up and down the hill, must be a Porsche driver at heart, becausehe went around the bends like one, at leastby my account! The Village Bar & Grille served up anothergreat dinner. I was not able to attendthat one, but heard it was great. Thanks toFrederick & Susan Rauch for putting thedinner together for us.Herb & Jan Hoover hosted the ChocolateTour for us on June 26. A superb luncheonwas ready for our group at the CaféCocoa, complete with a decedent chocolatedessert. This month’s dinner meeting will be atVince’s Italian Restaurant in Elk Grove. Besure to note the different date from our usualschedule: this one will be on Wednesday,July 6. There will be a great steak, chickenmarsala or prawns to choose from. Pleasecontact Shelley Busuttil for your reservationat 916-686-2161.Karen’s Bakery will be having anotherNo Host Breakfast for us Saturday, July 16from 7:30-9:30 am. They are located at 705Gold Lake Drive in Folsom. Come on outand enjoy some great food! It is a great wayto start a Porsche day.Rick Weidner and his crew have beenworking hard planning an awesome trip tothe Mammoth area. Mammoth PorscheHappening is the name; fun is the game!If you have been thinking of taking a tourwith the Club, but haven’t done it so far, here’s your chance to go on a great one thatis sure to be repeated. There will be lots todo: hiking, swimming, touring in your P-car(what could be better?), beautiful scenery, great food. Need I say more? The date isJuly 29-31. Call Rik Larson for your reservationat 916-481-6084 (6-9 pm, please). In August Carl Brakensiek and DougKlein are planning the Caples Lake,Winery & Silver Fork Tour. This will be aone-day tour through the foothills of theShenandoah Valley, stopping for a privatetasting at Latcham Vineyards! There aresome scenic and twisting roads to travel upHighway 88 to the beautiful Caples Lake, where there will be a BYOL (Bring YourOwn Lunch) picnic with a special prizefor the most creative picnic presentation!Reservations are limited to 25 cars, andthe tour fee is $10 per car. Call Carl at916-612-3274 or Doug at 916-791-4864for your reservation.I just wanted to add that we should supportour Drifter advertisers when possible.I needed some new tires on Skippy andused OK Tires to do the deed. They didan excellent job and did the “show” mount(I told them how Porsche-ticular I was),which means they hand torque the lugs andpointed my crest to the valve stem. Nicejob. I also visited Dale at European AutoBody and he made Skippy more handsomethan he already is. (A woman never discussescosmetic issues!) And I paid a visit toFrank’s Automotive to get those tires dialedin with a perfect alignment. That made theSan Simeon drive pure pleasure! Hum … Ithink my Porsche budget is used up for themonth! If you want to become more involved inthe Club, this is a great opportunity. Also, ifyou would like to host a tour event, pleaselet me know and I can help you get thatstarted.9

Spring Driving &Garage TourBy Kim NelsonTour OperatorOn Saturday May 7, the “Porsche gods” weredefinitely looking down and smiling upon the90-plus members from SVR and 356 CARwho gathered to take a driving tour and viewthe beautiful car collection of Stephan &Vicki Childs. It rained for 4 days before and3 days after the event, but on May 7 the suncame out and blessed us with temperatures inthe mid 70s. Ah, isn’t life wonderful!Wow, what a garage...and the cars aren’t bad either!Rich Swenson laid out the driving toursand Judy Hanna, Jim McMahen and JeffKinder were our leaders. After RachelCocuzzi and Linda McMahen got the 90-some people registered, 54 Porsches tookoff in three groups at 10 am and made theirway through the Sierra Foothills, meeting upat Montevina Winery for a quick rest stop. From there it was a short 20-mile blast onsome of the best Porsche Roads in NorthernCalifornia to the front gate of the Childshome. Once everyone was parked the realOver 90 members were assembled and ready to rollmade. The Childs’ collection includes a 1957Speedster, a 1965 VW with a 356 engine, a1968 911 T/R, a 1971 911 Targa, two 1973Carrera RSs, a 2001 Twin Turbo and a 2005Carrera GT. And the best part of all is thatthese cars are driven on a regular basis; they’renot just garage queens. If you missed the tour this year you justhave to hope that Stephan & Vicki willextend an offer in the future for a repeatperformance. If so, I just have a hunch thatthey will have a few more goodies to showus. A special thank you goes to Stephan& Vicki for very graciously opening theirbeautiful home to us, and also to Judy Hannaand Rich Swenson without whose help theday’s activities would not have been nearlyso special.Stephan & Vicki Childs open their beautifulhome and garage to SVRall photos by Kim NelsonMembers enjoyed a relaxing afternoon BBQfun began. Spring Flowers Rally Photos by Phillip “Goose” MarksTypical…one worker and ten beer drinking “supervisors”!This well-traveled spot looked more like a party than a checkpoint!SHOW YOUR COLORS …Once again July is upon us, and along with it that great Americanholiday, July 4 th . Independence Day celebrates the birth of theUnited States of America. Founded July 4, 1776, with the signingof the Declaration of Independence, America is celebrating its229 th birthday this year.No Fourth celebration is complete without hot dogs, beer, picnics, beer, short shorts, beer, and the old Red, White & Blue—OldGlory! Know what else is mostly red, white and blue? The PCA carbadge—still only $18, plus $2 for shipping and handling. And of course, we still have the SVRbadge ($15) and other red hot goodies. You’ve also gotta keep cool, and nothing is cooler than our Porsche T-shirts (especially thenew ones with the Porsche script in outline form), and our SVR and Porsche crest logo poloshirts. They also come in red, white and blue. Don’t miss out! You need our stuff; we need yourmoney! Let’s get together! This stuff is so cool that it would charm a snake!Did you know that snake charming is so old that it’s mentioned in the Egyptian Book of theDead? (I can’t think of a more likely profession to get you into that book!) Westerners havealways had a morbid fascination with the practice; witness how often the image of the guywith the flute, basket and (yuk!) cobra appears in paintings, films and novels. So how do theydo it? We can eliminate the flute as a factor. It’s a prop; cobras don’t have ears. Instead, thecharmer, who has been trained for the job since childhood, simply knows how to annoy thereptile enough—say, by waving his hand in its face—to make it rear up, but not so much thatit will strike. It’s show biz; that’s all. Wanna try it?Contact your friendly GOODIE STORE! Tech StuffBy Roger WalkerTechnical ChairWhile looking for something to write aboutfor this month’s article, I came across a coupleof good DIY write-ups on Robin Sun’s website (http://www.p-car.com/). The 993 is verygood at adjusting for variances in idle situationssuch as different flywheels or exhaustsystems. For example, the 964 has a veryhard time adjusting to having a lightweightflywheel installed and will tend to die at idle, whereas the 993 has a more sophisticatedidle control system and will adapt. About ayear ago, I installed some of Robin’s modifiedmufflers on my ‘96 Carrera, and for the first100 miles the idle varied, and even stalled theengine a couple of times, but after about twohours, the system learned the new variablesand settled down to a smooth idle again. If you have a 993 and have been having aninconsistent idle, then the following mightbe helpful and will give you some familiaritywith your engine. I’ve done a little editingfor brevity’s sake. Also, there is a differencein intake systems on a ‘95 versus ‘96-’98 3.6lmotor, so the pictures shown below might bea little different from what you see in your car,but the location of this valve is the same.Idle Stabilizer Valve (ISV) CleanoutContributed by: Robert HenriksenDegree of difficulty: 2-3 out of 10, 10 beingthe most difficult.Tools you’ll need:• #2 Phillips screwdrivers: regular and long• a 7mm box wrench or open-end wrench,and/or a 7mm socket, ratchet, and 3”-6”extension• spray can of carburetor or brake cleaner(basically a really volatile spray solvent)• paper towels, cleaner, maybe some cottonswabs and silicone or WD-40 sprayYou can see the silver canister sittingon the very top of the intake manifold, justbarely fitting below the rear window. Loosenthe rearmost hose clamp and wiggle the aluminumpipe out of the way, as in the photo.Just undo three hose clamps and wrestle itout of its home. Once removed from the topof the motor, there is no further disassemblyof the ISV needed or recommended. [Toremove the electrical connector, push in gentlyon the metal wire/clip on the connectoritself.]The rearmost hose clamp has been loosenedand the aluminum pipe wiggled out of the way. There are two things that make removingthe ISV a pain: First, the factory workerwho tightened the hose clamps originallydid it with the engine outside of the car. Hedidn’t have to worry about being able to get ascrewdriver on them later when the motor isin the car. Naturally, the screws are pointingoff in impossible angles. That’s why I had touse a 7mm wrench on the back hose clamp, there was no way to get a screwdriver on it.[Robin did it by using a flexible shaft screwdriver.]The other problem is just that the circularrubber gasket surrounding the ISV is probablyold and dirty, making it hard to slide thecylinder out. One thing I did which helpedwas clamp down a pair of channel lock plierson the #2 intake runner, right next to the ISV.That gave me a fulcrum to lever a big screwdriveragainst the left end of the cylinder toget it started sliding out to the right. [I amnot crazy about this suggestion; use a rag toprevent scratching your manifold if you dothis. Robin sprayed a little WD-40 aroundthat area to loosen it.]Here’s what’s left once you wrestle the ISVout …… and the ISV alone.I strongly recommend wearing goggleswhen using brake cleaner! It’s either thator having a garden hose or bathtub handyfor massive amounts of flushing your eyeswhen the inevitable happens and you get astrong back-blast of that stuff directly intoyour eyeball. Ask me how I know. That said, peek into the entrance and exit pipes, andtwist the ISV around. There probably won’tbe much movement inside yet.Eventually it will look like this.Once you’ve blasted it well with thecleaner, shake as much of the dirty cleanerout as possible, and mop up with papertowels. I found a couple of Q-Tips helpedme scrub off some of the dirt that was onthe surface of the rotating assembly inside.Give the remaining solvent in the cylindertime to dry out; it takes just a few minutes.I guess you could hasten that process withan air hose and blow tip, but I’m not in thatmuch of a rush.Note the gunky inner surface of the rubber ringgasket. One other thing I did to make my lifeeasy was to clean up the dirt with SimpleGreen, paper towels, and a fingernail. Ithen soaked the interior of the gasket withArmor All. I don’t use that silicone-basedstuff anymore on my interior, but figured itwould make a good lubricant to slide thecylinder back into its home, and it workedout okay. One of the more satisfying things aboutdoing this job yourself is that you can reattachthe hose clamps such that you can actuallyget to them easily with a screwdriver in16 The Drifter

the future! Having a #2 Phillips screwdriverwith about a 10” shaft makes this a lot easieron your knuckles.Reinstall the valve in reverse order, andplug in your electrical connector. Onceeverything’s back together and you’vestarted up the engine, your idle may take afew minutes to self adjust, so a short drivemight be in order. Theyapparently caught SVR fever somewherealong the way, because when they got backfrom San Simeon they called us up to findout more about the Editor’s job. You’d thinkwe would jump all over that after a couple ofmonths of fishing for successors with no bites, and you’d be right, except we were caught in anespecially busy week that left us with no goodtime to return the call. You might think thatdelay would have discouraged these newbies, but you’d be wrong. In fact, the Harriganswere so enthusiastic that they tried to reach usagain after a couple of days had passed. Finally,Elliot reached them and described the job …and they still wanted to do it!Many ThanksWe are so grateful to so many people for thesupport and encouragement we’ve received inthis role. Dennis Stettner spent an afternoonwith us going over the tools and the process toget us started, and continued to coach us hereand there along the way. Larry Wilson sharedwisdom gained in his work with the Nationalnewsletter. Doug DeVetter, Phil Lawrence,Doug Klein, Kim Nelson, and many otherssent us their event photos. Board memberssent us their monthly articles, and a numberof you sent in one-time articles to share yourexperiences with your Porsches and your Clubwith everyone. Rik Larson provided plenty ofcontent, and proofed every issue both beforewe went to print and before the printer went topress. We were always running late, and he wasalways graciously flexible. His were the “otherset of eyes” that caught many things that wedidn’t, and his many years of experience in theClub were invaluable at times.During our tenure, many of you went outof your way to express your enjoyment of ourwork and thanks for our efforts. That encouragementhelped make all the hard work feelworthwhile, and we really appreciate all yourkind words. We know you will welcome andsupport Nicolas & Lindsey just as enthusiasticallyas they take on the labor of love that isThe Drifter. And don’t forget that one of themost important ways to show your appreciationfor your Editors is to make their jobseasier. Keep those photos and articles coming, and get them in by the 1 st of the month. Finally, we offer a huge thank you to Nick& Lindsey for taking over this importantwork, and freeing us to focus on other thingsfor a while. I plan to devote some muchneededattention to my career, while Elliotlooks forward to doing more photography andcatching up on some home maintenance andimprovement projects. Who knows? Maybesomething will finally happen with that TR6in the garage! What we don’t plan on doingis disappearing from SVR. We will still seeyou all at dinners and on tours, and we wantto give rallying another try. I have no doubtthat you’ll still see Elliot’s photos decoratingthe pages of The Drifter and that we’ll serveon the Board again after the new Editors areup to speed and we’ve had some time to enjoybeing “just members” for a while.Drifter Classifieds for Porsches and/or Porsche-related parts or accessories are available at no charge to PCA members (pictures with text are $15 each); non-members may submit ads, $20each; pictures with text add $15 each (member & non-member).
