TRIVIA QUESTION OFTHE MONTHSee how far your Porsche knowledge goes. Can you answer this?:911 was not the original model designation. What was it?The answer will be in next month’s issue of The Drifter.Last month’s trivia question: What does the “K” stand for in the car name 917K?Answer: The “K” is for “kurzheck,” which in German is short tail.6 The Drifter

MendocinoWe have 30 cars (as of April 15th) signed up so far for this 3-day tour in November. So why sucha big push to let people know about an event that is 6 months away? Because we need to securethe rooms with deposits at the three primary inns that we have booked. This year we have a block of rooms at the Hill House in Mendocino, the MacCallum House(SOLD OUT) also in Mendocino, as well as rooms at the Little River Inn (in Little River). The Hill House block is being coordinated by Tom and Tambra Kroetz (916-989-1984). TheMacCallum House block is being coordinated by Frederick D. Rauch (916-989-3199). The LittleRiver Inn block is being handled by Rik and Lettie Larson (916-481-6084; 6 to 9 pm please).Room accommodations are either ocean view (all places) or garden view (Hill House). Contactthe coordinators for additional information about the types of rooms remaining, depositsrequired, cancellation costs, etc. A deposit is required to hold a room (all locations). Cancellationpolicies are strictly enforced. If you want to stay an extra day or two, either before or after thegroup, we will try to make it happen. But we must know NOW if you have plans to stay extradays. It is easier to reserve the rooms for longer periods (and then release the days if you don'twant them) than it is to add days to your stay. This is a 3-day, 2-night tour to the Mendocino area. You do not have to stay at the above places.. . . . .. you can make your own reservations elsewhere. If you need any assistance, contact Rik.This is a very informal tour with the only semi-competitive event being a kite-flying contest onSaturday afternoon. Golf, tennis, horseback riding, beach walking, kayaking, etc. are allavailable on the north coast. We can provide many suggestions as to the area restaurants, wineries, points of interest, etc.And remember; don't turn your back to the ocean. Our schedule:FridayFridayFridayFridayFridaySaturdaySaturdaySaturdaySundaySunday9amnoon 330pm 5pmevening2pm 5pmevening9amam/pmleave the Davis area for a leisurely tour to the Sonoma/Santa Rosa area picniclunch at a winery/park (exact location TBD) and join up with others arrive onthe Mendocino Coastsocial hour; share leftovers from lunch; toast the sunsetdinner on your own at your favorite coast restaurantkite-flying contest on the Mendocino Headlandssocial hour; kite-flying stories; toast the sunsetdinner with friends at your favorite restaurantoptional side trip to breakfast ($5) at the Fort Bragg Grangereturn home in small groups8 The Drifter

The SocialSceneBy Julia LynnSocial DirectorAhhh, the concours season is behind menow! Don’t take that the wrong way; I trulyenjoyed entering Skippy in five of the eightZone 7 concours events and taking three 1stplace and two 2nd place trophies. I’m hopingfor 2nd place in the Year End Zone 7 Awards. But, it is a lot of hard work. Concoursing isa labor of love…or maybe it’s just a lot oflabor! Several of our SVR members concourstheir cars and we all have a great time. Nextseason I’m going to be there simply to judgeand have Skippy on display. I would miss allthe great friends I’ve made along the way if Ijust stopped altogether. If you’re looking foranother way to enjoy your P-car, think aboutentering in a concours event. There is anarticle on our web site on the links page thatthe infamous Phil Lawrence wrote abouthow to prep your car for a concours. MaybeI should write one too for The Drifter…nextmonth! This month we have several events tokeep us busy. The Mendocino Tour will beunderway from November 4th through the6th. I have yet to go on that tour, but it sureseems that everyone has a great time andwhat great roads to travel on. I’ve driven thatroute many a time (born in Fort Bragg), butit was never in Skippy. I need to do that.Buzz and I are hosting the Novemberdinner meeting out at The Old SpaghettiFactory in Rancho Cordova. The dinner isThursday November 10th. Do you know why people say theymight have to “eat their hat?” Maybe To cap their food budget? For a peak experience? And that’s just off the top of my head. But actually, In medieval England, hat was spelled “hatte.” This would be a uselessbit of info unless the word had some food connection, as well. And it did. There was a popular pastry filled withmeat called hattes. And why was it so called? Because it was shaped like a _ _ _. Aw c’mon, you can fill it in! The expressionevolved as a bit of a pun, but also with the literal meaning that you’re so sure that what you’re asserting is truethat you will devour something truly indigestible if it isn’t. Hey, this expression is old hat. If you want to impress me,promise to eat your hat while it’s still on your head!Inquiring minds want to know!See Tom Sisson at meetings and events, or contact him at 14537 Surrey Junction Lane, Sutter Creek, CA 95685, 209-296-5352 or E-mail targatom@volcano.net Items can be mailed for a small shipping/handling fee.14 The Drifter

The Drifter is pleased to announce the inclusion of nationally known automotive adviser “Bondo Bob”to appear in our publication. Bondo Bob can answer those tough questions that come up between Porscheowners and their friends and family. Feel free to ask Bondo Bob any car related question and have those longunanswered situations put to rest. Also, we should all thank our advertising manager, Dick MacFarlane forarranging this syndication.Dear Bondo Bob....Q: My husband and I own a newly restored 356 and are very active in our PCA club up here in the northwest. My question to youis that even though I help wash, wax, vacuum, q-tip, ride in, and pay for this beautiful car I don’t have my own key. Is this a guy thing?Should I demand my own key or just put it in on my Christmas list and hope for the best? Keyless in SeattleA: Dear Keyless,Your husband is probably just afraid that an alien will take your purse and the key will fall into the wrong hands. Just ask for yourown key or do like my wife did and go make your own key.Q: My father is a wonderful man and when the weather is sunny and clear he takes me to the mall in his very fast and beautiful Porsche 911.The question I have is why we have to park so far away from the stores in a parking lot with a thousand empty spaces. Mall WalkerA: Dear Mall Walker,Parking lots are dangerous places for dings, scratches, finger prints, shopping carts, and car thieves. Your father is just protecting yourinheritance against all of these harmful events in a mall lot. I suggest you learn to set the alarm, put on the car cover and quit whiningabout a short hike to the Brass Rail in Nordstrom. Porsches don’t like close company in mall parking lots even on a sunny day.Q: I met a girl on-line and for our first date I took her to the Silver Star Show and Swap Meet. My friends are telling me that was sotacky and I should call her and apologize for taking her to a swap meet on our first date. Was I right on with my creative first date ordid I blow it? Swap Meet First MetA: Dear SMFM,Did she seem to have a good time? Did she complain about the heat, dirt, crowd, no jewelry vendors, or the food? If the answer isNO you are a dating genius. If she brought her own money and trailer...marry her.Gold Rush TourReviewBy Nick HarriganNewsletter Editorup a lung, I hopped in my Porsche as fast asthe Lone Ranger mounted Silver chasingafter the bandits. Here I come! Don’t leavewithout me!Bel Air market is only five minutes fromour house (four in a Porsche). As I enteredthe parking lot, I immediately scanned thearea for the Porsche corral. “Where are they,to have the ideal weather for touring. If therewere such a deity, what would her name be?Perhaps Carrera, goddess of go-fast cars? Yes,that would likely be it.One by one, each Porsche scooted outof the Bel Air parking lot making a rightturn onto Sunset Boulevard heading towardHighway 65. We passed Thunder ValleyCasino--no time to play a hand though. Then, our procession of Porsches once againcrossed over Highway 65 by way of TwelveBridges Drive, made our way to Sierra CollegeBoulevard, a left turn there, and then ashort jaunt to Highway 193 where we madea right turn heading toward Auburn. In true Porsche fashion, the Keegans andMcDades lead us to Downieville using themost direct route. Well of course I’m kidding! Our tour hosts did a fantastic job planningthe route to Downieville. They mapped outour route using every less traveled and beautifullyset windy road possible.Highway 193 is a decent Porsche road initself, but that wouldn’t do. it, we made a left turn onto Gold Hill Road.Between Gold Hill Road and Highway 49there were four turns. It seemed these sleepy,country-home laden roads got narrower aswe progressed. The residents living on theirfive acre parcels probably thought countryliving would exclude them from the noiseand vibrancy of modern engineering. Not!VROOOM we went, the flat sixes harmonizingin different tones. We made a left turn onto Highway 49by way of Atwood, drove about eight milesand stopped at the Chevron station locatedon Combie Road. Waiting there were moreSVR members ready to join in on the fun. Some utilized this stop to fuel up, go potty,or both, and to talk about their cars. One gasstation clerk remarked how he had neverseen so many Porsches in one place before.Yeah, pretty cool, but Porsches are a lot morefun when they’re movin’--fast.A half hour sufficed for this stop andthen, once again, we were off. CombieRoad turned into Wolfe Road after crossingHighway 49. Shortly after, we were drivingthrough gorgeous country with farm housesspeckled here and there. Everywhere I lookedI saw farm gates, horses, hay, and pastors.Thoughts like, “How beautiful... how tranquil...how fast can I drive around the nextcorner without spinning out?” popped intomy head.About twenty miles from the Chevronand we were in Nevada City. Our groupmade a left turn onto Highway 49 towardDownieville. The next fifteen miles werequite curvy. This section of road was carvedout of the mountain. Some stretches of theroad had only guard rails stopping an outof control car from rolling down the side ofthe canyon. It was during this stretch that Iobserved Larry Wilson drive his CayenneS like it was a 911. Man, that thing surehandles well, and Larry knows how to driveit. What good is a tour without a winerystop? Do the McDades and the Keegansdisappoint? No way. About 150 yards ofdriving on gravel (easy does it!) and therewe were, beautiful Double Oak Winery; ourcars dominated the driveway. Drivers andpassengers got out of their cars, did a littlestretch, and moseyed into the winery wheretwo gracious hosts were there to answerquestions, pour samples of their deliciouswine, and most importantly, show us wherethe restroom was; 73 miles of intense drivinghas its effects on the bladder! After about fifty minutes of wanderingthe winery, we got the itch to get back onThe Drifterthe road. In single file fashion we exited thesame way we entered. The winery is onlyabout six miles from Highway 49 where wewere to turn right at the stop sign, the lastturn to Downieville. I was third to the lastcar. In back of me was a striking dark maroon993 C2 S (I apologize for not knowing theowner’s name). Misreading the directions, Iturned left instead of right. Thankfully, theMcDades, acting as the sweepers, honkedat me almost instantly, alerting me of myerror. The 993 turned right heading towardDownieville.Up to this point of the tour our group hadbeen unchallenged; top of the food chain andmighty as a group we were. Cars and trucksmoved aside as we overcame them and safely(hopefully) passed and continued in a quickPorsche pace.As I was about to negotiate a U-turn, Isuddenly sensed that something was different-- all was not well in our Porsche kingdom.Instinctively, I turned my head to the right.Yes, one should look both ways before makinga turn, but in this case, the action wasprompted by an intuition. Then I spottedit. Instantly my eyes went into tunnel vision--fight or flight. In a fraction of a second, mycerebral cortex had translated informationit had received from the optic nerves andformulated this conclusion: “Our opponentis indeed formidable. It is a black Ferrari 550Maranello.”For those of you who have never seenone of these rare, Italian bred beasts, let meindulge you in describing it. I liken it to ashark. Behind both front wheel wells are two“gills,” or slotted air vents. Its front radiatorgrille is low, nearly dragging on the ground. It is partially open, revealing menacing teeth. The quad headlights are sunken beneathlong, sleek, transparent lens covers. Sharkstoo have a protective transparent membranethat covers their eyes so that they will notbe gashed while sinking their teeth intoprey. The 550 has an enormous, ellipticallyshaped scoop located on the fore section ofthe hood. The shark is a predatory machine. Its front half works to search and acquireprey, while the tail powerfully whips water, which translates to propulsion. The Ferrari550 is similar. The forward section of the carbears a monstrous engine--twelve cylindersshaped like a V that pump hordes of powerto its wide rear tires that make solid contactto the road. The last, but most impressionabledetail of note is the sound that resonatesout of its gaping four tipped exhaust ports. At normal operation, it has a moderate highpitched raspy sound. But, there’s a bansheelurking under the hood. Mash the gas andit sounds as if five sport bikes took off in fullthrottle right by you. Yes, it’s louder than anystreet going Porsche I have seen. The Ferrari spotted its prey: the 993. Thenext thing I heard was the roaring ferocityof the quad exhaust as it leapt to action inresponse to the 993 breaking out in a sprint, and they were gone.Over thirty Porsches and one Ferrari nippingat the tail of the 993 had sped away. Myerror had separated myself and the McDadesfar from the pack. However, there is no needto pity us. For me, the next twenty-five milesproved to be the most exhilarating stretch ofthe trip. At this point, the elevation was about3,000 to 3,500 feet. Tall pine trees coveredthe mountainous terrain on both sides of theroad. And, oh, that smooth tarmac that meanderedits way through the forest--what apleasure to drive. A mild wind blew dead pineneedles across the road as the sun peakedthrough the mass of trees. The McDades intheir gorgeous ‘89 930 slant nose and me inmy ‘79 911 SC, our mission was to catch upto the group. The high speed cornering, theundersteer, the straightway acceleration--itwas all part of the equation. Moments likethis make Porsche owners giddy. The onlyexception was when we came upon semi-wet,white paint splattered over the pavementand the can as an obstacle on the road. Wemanaged to avoid the can and wet paint, butI wondered about our friends ahead of us.About twenty-five miles later, we caughtup to the group. The Ferrari had managed topass a couple of Porsches--only a little carnagehad occurred. From what I understand, there is a story to tell about the race betweenthe Ferrari and the 993, but it is not my storyto tell.Ten miles later and we were in Downieville. This little town has every little cozy, quaintattribute you could ask for: small truss typebridges, cute bed and breakfasts, deliciousplaces to eat, antique shops, and yes, a riverruns through it. Our hosts had arranged forour group to enjoy a picnic at the RiversideInn, owned by the Carnahans. Thank youso much, Mr. and Mrs. Carnahan for yourgenerosity. It was so pleasant to eat our lunchon the deck of the lovely inn that overlooksthe river. To show our appreciation to theCarnahans, the Keegans and McDadespresented them a couple bottles of winepurchased from Double Oak Winery. After good food and conversation, wesaddled up and headed east on Highway 49toward Sierraville. This was where the hillclimb portion of the tour began. Downieville19

is approximately 3,800 feet above sea level.Halfway to Sierraville, which is about fortymiles from Downieville, we reached an elevationof over 7,000 feet. Then it was a briskdownhill slalom into the flat geographicalregion Sierraville is built upon.Just before entering town, the postedspeed limit dropped to 35 mph. Upon seeingthe sign, I let the car coast in fifth gear untilmy speedometer read somewhere around 40-45 mph. Push in the clutch, then reach forthe gear shift and it’s a brief down, slightlyover to the left, and an upward motion to putit in third. You know when you have one ofthose “OH $&%!” moments when you dosomething very wrong and you break in acold sweat and your senses are heightened, listening for any abnormal mechanicalsounds? Well, that’s what I experienced afterI let the clutch out and I heard the engineroar behind me. I immediately looked atthe tachometer and the needle was pointingat seven. I accidentally performed one ofthose feared miss-shifts. Discussion threadson Porsche forum sites are filled with poorbastards writhing about how they over revvedtheir engine causing valves to bend.I pushed in the clutch and put it in third. Then, I listened to the engine, critiquingevery sound it made. Carrera, goddess of allPorsches, must have been smiling down at mebecause no damage had occurred. Whew! Isaid five “Hail Carreras” after that. The group took Highway 89 towardTruckee. For me, this was the last leg of thetour, for I jumped on I-80 back to Rocklin. Some did likewise; most continued with thehosts taking back roads that parallel I-80until they passed the Rainbow Lodge, atwhich point they entered the freeway to getback home. This trip was an awesome joyride throughbeautiful scenery and I would like to thankthe Keegans and McDades for organizing it.Well done!Advertiser IndexA&S BMW Motorcycles 16Enterprise Printing 17European Body Shop 12Fabrication Specialties 2FDR Motorsports 16Frank’s AutomotiveIBCIPB - AutosportIFCKarma Kreations 17Niello Porsche15, BCOK Tire ‘n WheelIBCPartsheaven 6Performance Products 15The Racer’s Group 16Reflections in Glass 6Silver Star Recycling 5State Farm - Arnold O’Shields 6TrackmastersIFCWalt Stickel 14Weidman’s Wheels 6Please support our Drifter advertisers!Stop by and say “Thank you!” for their support. With their product or service donations andfinancial support of SVR, we are able to bring youmore and better activities.Drifter Classifieds for Porsches and/or Porsche-related parts or accessories are available at no charge to PCA members (pictures with text are $15 each); non-members may submit ads, $20each; pictures with text add $15 each (member & non-member).
