The final set ofcontent <strong>the</strong>mes were used to code <strong>the</strong> remaining focus group transcripts allowing for <strong>the</strong> identification ofrecurrent <strong>the</strong>mes <strong>and</strong> points of interest.Focus group findings were used to inform <strong>the</strong> development of campaign strategies (refer to PrimaryCommunication‟s Concept Strategy Report).3. Student Edge student consultationStudent Edge (www.studentedge.com.au) has over 90,000 members (<strong>and</strong> growing) in <strong>the</strong> 13-17 age groupnationwide <strong>and</strong> provides an opportunity for students to comment on youth-related issues through <strong>the</strong>ir „yoursay‟ page. All comments posted by students are moderated <strong>and</strong> have to be approved before beingdisplayed, enabling <strong>the</strong> removal of offensive material. Additionally, <strong>the</strong> Student Edge website provides <strong>the</strong>opportunity to ask <strong>the</strong> target group in an efficient <strong>and</strong> immediate way about a particular issue or strategy via„poll questions‟.A draft list of „your say‟ (i.e. student edge discussion blog) <strong>and</strong> potential „poll questions‟ were developed by<strong>the</strong> CHPRC <strong>and</strong> sent via email to <strong>the</strong> Commission <strong>and</strong> Primary Communication for comment <strong>and</strong> feedback.Amendments were <strong>the</strong>reafter made <strong>and</strong> a final draft list of questions was sent to Student Edge for <strong>the</strong>irexpert opinion <strong>and</strong> advice. Following this process, <strong>the</strong> final „your say‟ <strong>and</strong> „poll question‟ was devised(Appendix 8).Data CollectionThe „your say‟ question went live on <strong>the</strong> Student Edge website on July 1, 2011 <strong>and</strong> remained active for 24consecutive days (closed on 24 July, 2011). Student members across Australia were notified of <strong>the</strong> „your say‟campaign via a membership email or alerts communicated via Student Edge‟s Facebook page. Studentswere encouraged to participate in <strong>the</strong> „your say‟ question by going in <strong>the</strong> draw to win one of two 8GB iPodNanos. On 24 July, 2011, <strong>the</strong>re were a total of 409 responses to <strong>the</strong> „your say‟ question, including 27duplicate responses. Responses made by students older than 18 years of age were excluded to ensurerespondents were between 13 <strong>and</strong> 17 years. In total, 26% (n=105) of participants were aged over 18 years<strong>and</strong> consequently <strong>the</strong>ir responses were excluded. This exclusion resulted in a final sample size of 277.The poll question went live on 15 July, 2011, two weeks after <strong>the</strong> „your say‟ question <strong>and</strong> yielded a total of1,341 responses.Data AnalysisA r<strong>and</strong>om sample of „your say‟ responses (n=6) were subjectively reviewed by two researchers using <strong>the</strong>same methods as with <strong>the</strong> focus group consultation outlined above.Page 20 of 197
