SERIES GSJIntroductionComplementing the GSF range of fixed Swirl Diffusers withthe GSJ Series Gilberts introduce a modern and attractivelystyled range of adjustable Swirl Diffusers suitable for amultitude of ceiling supply applications.As with the fixed Swirl the circular pattern of radial vanesfeatured on this unit provide the rotating air distribution effecttypically associated with this type of diffuser. This allows theunit to introduce high volumes of air into the conditionedspace, taking advantage of its rapid entrainment andintermixing characteristics.As a result the unit can deliver high room air change rates ascompared to conventional diffusers. Moreover with theinterlinked blades all fully adjustable the unit can provideeither horizontal or vertical projection by simple manual orautomatic adjustment.Notwithstanding the performance potential, aestheticaspects have also been considered. The GSJB and GSJCtype however, which offer a perforated face diffuser typeappearance, lend themselves particularly well in theseinstances always enabling a good balance betweenperformance and aesthetics to be maintained for allapplications. Newer models, such as the GSJD, adapted forclip-in ceiling type applications and the GSJE with a circularperforated face add further dimensions to swirl diffuserselection and application.Available in 160, 250, 315, 450 and 630mm diameter the adjustable Swirl range comprises of 5 style options:TYPE GSJA Standard Swirl Diffuser comprising of linked adjustable blades mounted in a circularhousing frame.TYPE GSJB Circular Swirl Diffuser with linked adjustable blades fitted into a square,perforated face, housing frame with 32mm flanges. The perforated fascia is hinged foreasy access from the diffuser face.TYPE GSJC Circular Swirl Diffuser with linked adjustable blades fitted into a borderless, perforatedface plate.TYPE GSJD Circular Swirl Diffuser with linked adjustable blades fitted into a square, perforatedfascia, adapted for clip-in ceiling applications.TYPE GSJE Circular Swirl Diffuser with linked adjustable blades fitted into a circular, perforatedfascia with removable core (630 dia. unit not available).For extract applications complementary Exhaust Swirl Units GSXB, GSXC, and GSXE are available to match supplydiffuser type options.A key feature on adjustable Swirl Diffusers is the ability to move from horizontal to vertical projection on demand. With GSJSeries this can be achieved in 4 ways.OptionsMANUALThis type of manually adjustable diffuser allows variablecontrol of the supply air jet by rotation of the central boss.The rotation of the central boss is converted by connectingmechanisms to re-position the swirl diffuser control vanes.THERMALThis control option utilises an internal and integral wax filledcylinder. The cylinder automatically expands and adjusts theair distribution vanes dependant upon supply airtemperatures, thus delivering warm air in a vertical and coolair in a horizontal direction. Initial warm up of spaces istherefore quick and efficient with draughts being avoidedduring isothermal and cooling conditions. The mainadvantage of this control option is that it requires no externalconnection to any control system and is therefore completelyselfcontained. Vertical projection is adjustable betweenapproximately 18°C and 25°C by means of a central controlscrew. Below these values the control vanes progressivelymove to distribute the supply air in a horizontal direction.Direction of the supply air is therefore dependant uponsupply air temperature. A supply air maximum temperatureof 50°C should not be exceeded.2Adjustable Swirl Diffusers

SERIES GSJOptionsELECTRICIn this type of diffuser the adjustment of the supply air jet iscontrolled by means of a integral electric motor.The motor is two position and as such, can move the aircontrol vanes from vertical to horizontal and back in a directoperation. Units are supplied with a 24v AC/DC Belimomotor.PNEUMATICA pneumatic cylinder is utilised in this model to control theoperation of the air control vanes from vertical to horizontaland back in a direct operation. Pneumatic cylinders have twocompressed air supply connection ports for operationin both directions. Units can therefore control the direction ofthe supply air jet via an external pneumatic control system.Compressed air pressure of 1 Bar required to operate unit.Maximum pressure 1.5 Bar.PerformanceDataSelectionProcedureThe performance tables that are illustrated in this brochuregive tabulated performance data for each listed size ofdiffuser, together with their design. The figures given relateto Cooling, Ventilation and Heating applications and aregiven for both horizontal and vertical distribution ofconditioned air.References UsedPRESSURE: All pressures are in Pa N/m2THROW: The horizontal and verticaldistances for air streams are givenat both 0.5 and 0.25 m/s terminalvelocities and are based upon aceiling effect for horizontaldistribution and free field for verticaldistribution.SOUND: The NC values are peak values onthe NC curvesThe performance data for all Gilberts products is derivedusing a Gilberts plenum design and specification.Performance cannot be guaranteed where alternativeplenum designs are used.1. Adjustable Swirl Diffusers are mainly used in high ceilingair distribution systems where vertical projection of supplyair is required during the heating cycle and horizontalprojection of supply air during cooling.2. Try if possible to construct in plan an imaginary squareceiling grid. This will enable the designer to position eachdiffuser at each square centre so that horizontal airdistribution is even in all directions.3. Establish the design maximum supply to room airtemperature differential. Together with the supply airvolume per diffuser select a suitable sized unit to verticallyproject the supply air into the occupied zone.4.
