Model U.N Conference
Do the words Model U.N. ring
a bell? If not, then here is some
information about what it is and
how our QOP students get
involved. It is actually far from
that idea. Mrs. Judy Zitlow,
moderator of Model UN said,
“Model UN conference is a
simulation of sessions of the
United Nations where countries
of the world meet to discuss
global issues. The goal of the
United Nations is to solve
International problems peacefully
without armed conflict”.
Each student participating will
research topics of their given
country. This year, the students of
Queen of Peace are to represent
Somalia, a country in the western
part of Africa. Students
participating are: Kara Scully,
Sonia Shahin, Marie Bongiorno,
Michelle Maturlak, Kelli Peyronet,
Samantha Spoto, Brittni
Senese, Kathy Gwozdz, Kristen
Wasliewski,and Marissa Ander-
son. “Our students did research
on Global Pandemics, Electoral
Violence, health issues of women
and children in poor countries
and empowering women in poor
countries to participate in
government. The Student of QOP
will then discuss these problems
with other countries and develop
workable resolutions to solve
these problems”, says Mrs.
Zitlow.
Somalia in recent years, has
been the site of numerous “pirate”
attacks on ships. Somalia is a
country struggling to form a
functional government so pirates
will not continue to break the law
and influence the country.
“This is a great experience for
high school students. First of
all, kids get a chance to expand
their horizons and discuss big issues
confronting the countries of
the world. Second, students get
to meet and interact with other
students from all over the
United States (students from
China have been a part of the
University of Chicago Model
U.N. for the past two years).
Third, the students learn a
lot about other countries and
various perspectives on
global issues. And last, it’s
just a lot of fun!” says the
moderator of the club. Support
represent Somalia and the
