OhioHealth Dublin Methodist HospitalFive years of innovation, growth and quality care2008 – 2013

Message from the PresidentBruce P. HagenWhen Dublin Methodist Hospital opened its doors in January2008, it marked an important milestone for OhioHealth aswell as for healthcare in central Ohio — and beyond. With thesupport of the Dublin community, we were able to create thefirst hospital in the nation to integrate totally digital, wirelesstechnology with evidence-based architecture to create a unique“high tech, high touch” healing environment. The welcome wereceived from community leaders and the people of Dublin, fromthe very beginning of our planning efforts in 2004, was integralto that success.Five years later, we continue to grow and expand — and our partnership with theDublin community is more important than ever. We have expanded our surgical services;added radiation oncology and breast health services; and enhanced cardiac care with aHeart Failure Clinic. Already this year, we’ve opened a new Heart and Vascular diagnosticcatheterization lab and launched construction for an expanded maternity care unit.Within the Dublin community, we are playing a vital role in supporting developmentof the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. We also are proudto support important initiatives such as Healthy Dublin, Project SEARCH, the Dublin IrishFestival, the Memorial Tournament, the Dublin Foundation Emerald Celebration and more. And we’re just getting started. Our campus was designed for growth. As a system, weare always looking for new ways OhioHealth can better serve Dublin residents close towhere they live, and we’re already making plans for what comes next. Financially, we areahead of our projections and have met or exceeded all targets since 2009. We ensureaffordable care for the community through continual expense management and focus onoperational efficiency. As a result, we are among the lowest-cost hospitals in central Ohio, and our internal performance metrics show we effectively balance quality and servicewith a positive work-life balance for our associates. On behalf of all our physicians, associates and volunteers, I want to thank you for yoursupport. We look forward to continued growth and innovation to better serve ourcommunity in the years ahead.Bruce P. Dublin Methodist HospitalInnovative Design, Centered on the PatientAfter five years of growth and evolution, Dublin Methodistremains true to the original vision of a new kind of hospitalcentered on the patient. While hospitals have traditionallybeen designed around the needs of doctors, nurses andadministrators, when Cheryl Herbert joined as DublinMethodist’s first president, she had a different idea. Her goalwas to transform a former farm field into a hospital featuringan innovative, healing environment designed from the groundup with patient needs as the primary concern. The results of that planning process are evident today assoon as a visitor enters Dublin Methodist’s lobby. Nature is apowerful healing force; a two-and-a-half story waterfall andlive trees set the tone. Interior courtyards allow natural light toreach nearly 90 percent of all spaces.Thirteen gardens are situated in quiet courtyards and rooftopsettings where patients and loved ones can enjoy nature, meditate and talk. Reflecting OhioHealth’s mission, faith isa major component of the hospital’s design, which includes achapel to accommodate the needs of all religions.“Our vision was to build a hospital thatembraced patients, their loved ones andeveryone involved in helping patients getwell,” said Cheryl Herbert, President, dublinmethodist from 2004–2010. “That meantcreating a unique environment for thepeople who give that care — physicians, nurses, lab techs, pharmacists and more.”“We want patients and families to feel as comfortable duringtheir stay as they do in their own home,” said Herbert.Patients stay in private rooms, which studies show reducestress, improve infection controland enhance confidentiality. Therooms are large to provide amplespace for visitors and caregiversand include comfortable sleepingcouches. Loved ones may comeand go without restrictive visitinghours. To ensure privacy, patientsremain out of public spaces anytime they must be in gowns.Growing Employment2008:2012:To create the ideal culture, the nursing staff was carefullychosen from a long list of applicants. “Working at DublinMethodist meant they were the chosenones,” said Herbert. “We emphasized507Employees656Employeesthat we really were a family becauseeveryone was working together forso long and doing so many things toensure an excellent patient experiencefrom the first day.”The culture is further enhancedthrough a strong volunteer base.Dublin Methodist is the only OhioHealthhospital with a waiting list ofcommunity members ready to volunteer.3

Community Support Criticalto SuccessThe local community was also key in planning Dublin Methodist. Four yearsbefore the doors opened, the management team was in regular contact withcommunity leaders and civic groups about the vision for Dublin Methodistand what it would offer. From the earliest outreach, city leaders recognized the benefits of having a hospitallocated in Dublin — it would bring jobs as well as attract residents and businessesto the community.“The Dublin communitywas very welcoming tous,” said Cheryl Herbert,President, dublin methodistfrom 2004–2010.“Top cityofficials told us having thiskind of healthcare facilitywould in essence ‘complete’the community and helpattract new businesses andresidents. We chose to bepart of Dublin because theywanted us here and gave usso much support — and thatsupport continues today.”4OhioHealth dublin Methodist HOSPITAL Five years of innovation, growth and quality care | 2008 - 2013

Dublin Methodist HospitalGarnering Attention fromAround the WorldThe new facility drew a positive response from patients and families as well as thelocal community — and beyond. In the first year, Dublin Methodist hosted more than150 tours for hospital leaders from across the country and around the world. This wider recognition resulted from Dublin Methodist’s participation in the PebbleProject, a joint research project between the Center for Health Design and healthcaresystems dedicated to improving the environment in hospitals. As part of this small, select group of hospitals, Dublin Methodist was able to convert hard medicalevidence into a healing environment.“At the time, Dublin Methodist was better known nationally than it is locally,” saidHerbert. “We were one of the first hospitals to put the whole package together —building design, culture and technology — and people wanted to see how it workedso they could adapt the ideas for their organizations.”The response from patients was especially gratifying. In its first full year of operation,Dublin Methodist received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award fromHealthgrades, a national healthcare ratings organization. The award placed DublinMethodist in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationally and was one of only10 hospitals in Ohio to achieve the designation.“Being ranked among thebest is a reflection of ourquality of care,” said BruceHagen, current president, dublin methodist hospitaland grady memorialhospital. “While we’re asmall community hospital,we deliver pioneeringtreatments for our patientsand an exceptional level ofservice that is uncommonamong hospitals of our size.”“Receiving this honor verified that our caregivers and physicians have developeda truly special hospital that ensures each patient has an outstanding experience,”said Bruce Hagen, who in 2010 succeeded Herbert as president. Hagen joined DublinMethodist after serving as president of OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, bringing with him more than 30 years of healthcare experience.5
