drives; hi-fi stereo system and radio/<br />

cassete recorders.<br />

Republic of Korea<br />

Republic of Korea was the second<br />

largest foreign investor with total<br />

investments of RM5.2 billion. Korean<br />

investments were in 10 projects, of<br />

which seven were new projects and<br />

three were expansion/diversification<br />

projects. The large investments from<br />

Republic of Korea were mainly from:<br />

• A new project with investments of<br />

RM2.2 billion for the manufacture<br />

of lithium ion batteries; and<br />

• A new project with investments<br />

amounting to RM1.1 billion for the<br />

production of photovoltaic functional<br />

glass.<br />

The USA<br />

The uSA was the third largest investor<br />

with investments of RM2.5 billion<br />

in 21 projects. <strong>Investment</strong>s from<br />

the uSA were mainly in expansion/<br />

diversification projects which amounted<br />

to RM2.4 billion (12 projects) while<br />

investments in new projects amounted<br />

to RM145.8 million (9 projects). The<br />

large investments from the uSA were:<br />

• A diversification project for the<br />

manufacture of electronics measuring<br />

instruments and bio and chemical<br />

analytical equipment with an<br />

investment of RM967.8 million;<br />

• An expansion project for the design,<br />

development and manufacture of<br />

silicon photovoltaic wafers/cells/<br />

modules/panels with investments<br />

amounting to RM668.4 million;<br />

and<br />

• An expansion project for the<br />

manufacture of integrated circuits<br />

and to undertake activity on testing<br />

of semiconductor devices with<br />

investments of RM600 million.<br />

Singapore<br />

Singapore continued to be a major<br />

source of investments in <strong>2011</strong> with<br />

RM2.5 billion in 88 approved projects.<br />

<strong>Investment</strong>s from Singapore in new<br />

projects amounted to RM1.5 billion (43<br />

projects) while investments in expansion/<br />

diversification projects amounted to<br />

RM997.9 million (45 projects).<br />

Singapore investments were<br />

concentrated in the food manufacturing<br />

(13 projects/RM1.1 billion) and E&E (16<br />

projects/ RM476.3 million) industries.<br />

Major projects approved included<br />

a RM270 million project for the<br />

production of palm oil, palm kernel
