2012-13 SEASON PREVIEWThe Missouri S&T Lady Miners basketball team has had winning seasons in six of the last seven seasons and the oneit didn’t they finished at .500. It’s the second longest streak of sustained success in school history and head coach AlanEads would like to see that continue in the upcoming 2012-13 campaign.“We feel like we’ve got a good core group back with our seniors and juniors,” Eads said. “We feel that we’ve got goodtalent, speed and size. It’s just a matter of getting them to work together as a unit, work hard and learn to play together.”The Lady Miners, coming off an 18-9 season last year, return eight letterwinners and three starters off last season’sclub that advanced to the GLVC Tournament for the seventh straight year. Eads is counting on those veterans to leadthe newcomers and help get the program to its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years.“That’s our senior’s job every year to be leaders on and off the floor,” he says. “We need them to be vocal leaders andthey’ve done a decent job to this point. We’ve asked them to take more of a leadership role of this team and show thenew players the way.“Our new players are learning quickly, are catching on and have been working hard. They’ve been a good group towork with so far.”Senior Taylor Jensen and freshman Dajae Williams will see most of the actionat the point guard spot this season. Jensen appeared in all 27 ball games lastseason, starting 19 of those and averaged 2.4 points per game. Junior SenaitMcLeod will also see some time there, but will see a majority of time at the twoguard spot. McLeod appeared in every game but one last season and finishedwith an average of 3.4 points per contest.The Lady Miners will have to replace Courtney Kemp, a three-year starter, atthe two guard spot but Eads would like to see McLeod, senior Kyesha Hall andjunior Toni Knar step in and take on more of a scoring mentality. Hall got off to aslow start last season, but heated up in the second half and finished the seasonaveraging 6.6 points per game. Her numbers were even better in GLVC play asshe averaged 7.3 points per outing. Knar appeared in all 27 games, starting thelast four. She was one of the top threats from beyond the three-point line lastseason.Another spot to fill are the shoes of the other three-year starter, Julie Meyer.Senior Katelyn Heil and junior transfer Erica Askew will battle for playing timeto fill that role. Heil appeared in 26 games last season, two starts and averaged4.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Askew, a 5-8 guard, averaged 14.7 pointsand 4.7 rebounds per game last season at Hillsborough Community College inTampa, Fla. Knar will also see time at the wing position as well.Hailee ParksSenior Hailee Parks returns at the forward spot and has led the Lady Miners in scoring the last two seasons. Lastseason she averaged 13.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Heading into the 2012-13 season she is 64 points shy ofreaching 1,000 for her career and she’s already recorded 514 rebounds. 2012-13 SEASON PREVIEWbench. Sample averaged 6.4 points per game last season doubling her averagefrom her freshman season. She also saw her rebounding numbers go up aswell averaging 4.2 rebounds per contest. Also in the mix at the four spot will besophomore Joslyn Arthur.An area of concern last season was the depth at the center position. Eadshopes that won’t be the case this season as Carissa Richardson returns for hersophomore year and he also brought in Kylie Cooper, a 6-2, junior-collegetransfer, and Leigh-Ann Kesper, a 6-4 freshman. Richardson averaged 1.9 pointsand 1.4 rebounds per game last season. Cooper played at Johnson CountyCommunity College where she averaged 6.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per gamein helping the Cavaliers make it to the NJCAA-II Championships in Peoria, Ill.Kesper helped lead her high school team to the finals of the Illinois Class 4Astate finals last season. She averaged 7.0 points per game, shot 58.8 percentfrom the field and 70 percent at the foul line.S&T will face a tough schedule this season as it’ll play eight teams that advancedto the NCAA-II Tournament last season and one that went to the NCAA-III Tournament in Westminster. The Lady Miners tip-off their 2012-13 campaignthis coming Monday hosting Central Methodist in an exhibition game at 7 p.m.,at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
