GREAT LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCEMissouri University of Science and Technology is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, joining the leaguein the 2005-06 academic year as part of a league expansion that brought three institutions into the league. The GLVC,which is constituted of 16 institutions for the 2012-13 season, made its name as a power in NCAA Division II basketballbut has enjoyed success in many sports and now the league can claim itself as one of the nation’s top Division IIleagues. The GLVC is one of the largest conferences in NCAA Division II with the 16 members, the most recent addition beingMcKendree University for the current year. The conference also has two associate members -- Central State Universityand Urbana University from the state of Ohio -- to compete in football as the GLVC begins sponsoring championshipsin 2012.The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools- Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) -began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolisand Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - unitedto become the GLVC.Since formulation of the conference, seven schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue atFort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994),Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994) and UM-St. Louis (1995).Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season. IPFW left the GLVC after the 2000-01 academicyear and SIU Edwardsville left the conference after the 2007-08 season. The addition of Southern Illinois Edwardsville, Quincy, Wisconsin-Parkside and Missouri-St. Louis in the mid-1990sallowed the GLVC to become an immediate national power in several sports such as men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball and tennis. At the start of the 2005-06 season, Missouri S&T, Drury University and Rockhurst University – all of whom have had agood deal of success at the regional and national levels in various sports – have enhanced the league’s reputation atthe NCAA Division II level. The conference expanded again prior to the 2009-10 season when the University of Illinois-Springfield and Maryville University become members of the GLVC and again last year with the addition of WilliamJewell College. McKendree replaced Northern Kentucky in the league’s lineup in 2012-13 and Kentucky Wesleyanis in its final year as a league member in this academic year. Truman State, a former rival of S&T in the Mid-AmericaIntercollegiate Athletics Association, joins the GLVC as a full-time member in the fall of 2013.The league’s staff has also increased along the way, with the GLVC hiring its first full-time commissioner in 1996. In2001, an associate commissioner was also added to the full-time conference staff and the GLVC’s first full-time sportsinformation director was added in the summer of 2006.The GLVC can claim schools in several of the Midwest major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/NorthernIllinois (Wisconsin-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (SouthernIndiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst/William Jewell), Springfield, Mo.
