It recently addedunderground utility workto its resume.Thirty-five years ago Bruce Weddle formedthe foundati<strong>on</strong> for what is today <strong>on</strong>e of the mostsought-out site-c<strong>on</strong>tracting companies in southcentralKentucky. With no particular plan in mindas to what his future held after graduating fromhigh school, he took the advice of his uncles whowere homebuilders in the Somerset area, which islocated about 100 miles east of Bowling Green.“I ran equipment <strong>on</strong> the family farm,”said Weddle, President, who runs WeddleEnterprises, Inc., al<strong>on</strong>g with his s<strong>on</strong>s, Shaneand Eric, who serve as Vice Presidents. “Theysuggested I go into business for myself and dothe excavati<strong>on</strong> work for the housing they wereinvolved in building. I looked at it as a goodopportunity, so I bought a loader and a dumptruck and began digging basements, crawlspaces and hauling dirt. Early <strong>on</strong>, the focus wasdoing those projects and small residential jobs.”Weddle Enterprises c<strong>on</strong>tinues to do thosesmall jobs, but the business’ emphasis is <strong>on</strong>large site projects for residential and commercialdevelopers in about a 40-mile radius of Somerset.Five years ago, the Weddles added undergroundutility work to their resumes, allowing thecompany to offer its customers complete sitepackages that <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>lude everything from clearing tofinal grading and seeding.“We like to say we can handle everythingfrom the ground down,” said Shane, whojoined the business full time a decade ago andoversees Weddle’s two grading crews. “We’re aturnkey site c<strong>on</strong>tractor that handles everythinginvolved with site work. We sub out thepaving, but we take resp<strong>on</strong>sibility for it too.”“It’s our and our customers’ preference forus to do a full site package, but we also breakour services out quite often,” added Eric, whooversees the utility crew. “Highway work isan area we’re actively getting involved in now.We’ve subc<strong>on</strong>tracted some, and are looking toup our capacity to take <strong>on</strong> highway projects asa general c<strong>on</strong>tractor. We also have a small crewwhose sole focus is small, private residentialwork because we believe it’s necessary to takecare of those customers as well. Even thoughdad worked with many developers early<strong>on</strong>, he also did quite a bit of work for privateindividuals, so they were part of the reas<strong>on</strong> thebusiness grew and succeeded.”Excellent customer serviceSuccess wasn’t assured for Bruce Weddleearly <strong>on</strong>, but with determinati<strong>on</strong> he stuckwith the business and made it thrive. Eventhough he’d run equipment <strong>on</strong> the farm andwas quickly expanding his client base, the dirtbusiness wasn’t without its early challenges.“I learned the dirt business as I went al<strong>on</strong>g,and I’d often have to fix jobs because I wasn’tsure about things like checking grade.” Weddleremembered. “But I learned from those earlymistakes, and fortunately, the people I workedfor hung with me until I figured it out.”By 1976 he had a good handle <strong>on</strong> how tomake the business click and teamed up with hisfather and mother, Weynath and Elgie, officially


naming the business Weddle Enterprises. Withhis wife, Susan, taking care of the administrativeduties, the business slowly grew as thosecustomers who stuck with him c<strong>on</strong>tinued to turnto him to complete their grading projects.“Most of our work is for repeat customers,some of whom we’ve worked with 25 yearsor more,” Shane pointed out. “They’ve stayedloyal to us because we’ve worked hard tomake sure their projects are d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> time and<strong>on</strong> budget. That’s the key to our l<strong>on</strong>gevity andwill c<strong>on</strong>tinue to carry us through the future. Itdoesn’t matter how many comp<strong>on</strong>ents we addto the business, the bottom line is we have toprovide excellent work.”The Weddles admit it wouldn’t be possibleto do that without a dedicated staff of nearly50 employees who are split am<strong>on</strong>g the crews,office staff, truck drivers and mechanics. There isn’t a bettergroup of people out there. Every <strong>on</strong>e of them isvital to the company’s success and l<strong>on</strong>gevity.”High-profile projectsWeddle Enterprises crews have completednumerous high-profile jobs <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>luding the CollegeStreet streetscape project in downtown Somerset.Revitalizati<strong>on</strong> of the street involved replacingold, overhead utility lines with undergroundlines, as well as aband<strong>on</strong>ing old undergroundlines and installing new <strong>on</strong>es. “The challengewas to install new lines while not hitting what’salready in the ground,” Eric said. “Much of whatwas already there was old and sometimes notwell marked, but it went very well. The projecthad about 2,700 feet of new storm drainage,anywhere from 15 to 42 <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>hes in size. It <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>ludedWeddle Enterprises relies <strong>on</strong> Komatsu excavators, <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>luding PC300 (below) andPC228USLC (above) models, for a variety of tasks such as mass excavati<strong>on</strong>, loadingtrucks, digging pipe trenches and lifting and setting underground utility pipe andstructures. “Those PC228s are <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>redible,” said Vice President Eric Weddle. “Theywill go about anywhere, but what we really like is the power they have for their size.We’re able to lift heavier pipe and storm boxes, which is impressive c<strong>on</strong>sidering theyd<strong>on</strong>’t have a big counterweight <strong>on</strong> the back. Plus, we can dig through the entire cyclewithout losing power, just like we can with the larger Komatsu excavators.”head walls, drop boxes and curb inlets, so it wasa good-size, meticulous job.”A gravity sewer project in Pulaski Countycalled for Weddle’s utility crew to put innearly two miles of main line, laterals and apump stati<strong>on</strong> for a subdivisi<strong>on</strong> that had yearsof problems with individual septic systems.Weddle Enterprises hooked the subdivisi<strong>on</strong>to the city’s main sewer line, often running atdepths of more than 10 feet.Other current projects <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>lude a 43-acre Inter-Model park, where train cars can be stored orserviced and freight loaded/unloaded. Theproject involves moving nearly 300,000 yards ofmaterial for building pads, access roads, utilityinstallati<strong>on</strong> and detenti<strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>ds. That’s why they rely <strong>on</strong> Komatsumachinery purchased from <str<strong>on</strong>g>Brandeis</str<strong>on</strong>g>’ Corbinbranch through Sales Representative RobertKrutsinger. “We d<strong>on</strong>’t have extra equipmentaround in case of a breakdown, so it’simportant to us that the equipment is reliableand doesn’t cost us downtime,” Shane pointedout. “Komatsu equipment has been very good.Our first excavator was a Komatsu and we’vec<strong>on</strong>tinued to buy it ever s<str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>e.”The most recent Komatsu additi<strong>on</strong>s to theWeddle Enterprises fleet <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>lude two newexcavators, a PC78MR-6 and a PC200LC-8. Thecompany added the two to an excavator list thatalso features two PC228USLC-2s, a PC300LC-7,a PC300LC-6, a PC220LC-6 and a PC200LC-6that has more than 12,000 hours <strong>on</strong> it. They’reall equipped with JRB quick couplers for fastchanges of buckets and attachments, such as theTramac hammer the Weddles use with the biggermachines.The company also just purchased from<str<strong>on</strong>g>Brandeis</str<strong>on</strong>g> a new Ingersoll Rand SD-110 roller,which, al<strong>on</strong>g with another IR vibratory roller,handles compacti<strong>on</strong> duties.(L-R) <str<strong>on</strong>g>Brandeis</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sales Representative Robert Krutsinger works closely with Vice Presidents ShaneWeddle and Eric Weddle and President Bruce Weddle to meet their equipment needs. Plus, wecan dig through the entire cycle without losingpower, just like we can with the larger Komatsuexcavators. The bigger machines have theversatility of working <strong>on</strong> pipe trenches or doingmass excavati<strong>on</strong> and rock hammering.”Weddle Enterprises also has a KomatsuD39EX-21 hydrostatic dozer it uses for finishgrading. “It’s a topnotch machine,” Shaneaffirmed. “We use it for curb backfill and finegrading. The hydrostatic c<strong>on</strong>trol makes it verysmooth, even at slow speeds. And the six-wayblade is perfect for doing the fine work.”The Weddles also appreciate the fine work<str<strong>on</strong>g>Brandeis</str<strong>on</strong>g> does. “We’ve developed a verygood relati<strong>on</strong>ship with Robert and <str<strong>on</strong>g>Brandeis</str<strong>on</strong>g>,and before Robert, John Estill,” Bruce said.“They’ve always been good about having partsavailable and getting us machinery when weneed it. Service is very important to us, andthey’ve always delivered.”Taking advantage of opportunityThe Weddles equipped much of their fleetwith GPS technology. “We found that it wasa great investment,” Shane said. “It’s allowedus to be more accurate and get jobs d<strong>on</strong>e morequickly, so our customers can get their sitesdeveloped faster.”That’s important in what has always beenand c<strong>on</strong>tinues to be a str<strong>on</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>market. “This area has seen c<strong>on</strong>stant growth,even when the rest of the country wasexperiencing downturns in the ec<strong>on</strong>omy,”Eric stated. “There’s always been buildinghere, and we’ve always tried our best to takeadvantage of the opportunities presentedto us. Dad seized an opportunity when hestarted the business and we’re working toc<strong>on</strong>tinue that foresight into the future by beingopen-minded about new technology and newservices we can provide.” n

GUEST OPINIONEMERGENCY PREPAREDNESSHaving a crisis plan is an essential aspectof a quality safety programGeorge Kennedy,NUCA Vice Presidentof SafetyEvery jobsite shouldhave a pers<strong>on</strong> designatedto take charge in case ofan emergency and everycompany should have anemergency managementplan, according to NUCAVice President of SafetyGeorge Kennedy.NNo matter how hard a company tries to addressevery potential jobsite hazard, the possibilityalways exists that an accident will occur andevolve into a full-fledged emergency situati<strong>on</strong>.If that happens at your company, you will bemuch better off if you’ve taken steps to develop acomprehensive emergency management plan.Planning for an emergency involves firstselecting a pers<strong>on</strong> to take charge, and sec<strong>on</strong>d,creating a manual that provides step-by-stepdirecti<strong>on</strong>s for handling crisis events.The emergency manager should be a clear,quick thinker who is well-respected by thework force. Companies that have crews spreadout over a large area may have to designatemore than <strong>on</strong>e pers<strong>on</strong> to take charge in case ofan emergency. Of course, if fire and/or rescueservices are called in, the senior officer <strong>on</strong> thescene will be the <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>ident commander. However,your company will still need to have a pers<strong>on</strong>who represents your company’s interests andknows what to do. If this pers<strong>on</strong> is properlytrained, he or she will be able to take appropriatemeasures to lessen potential l<strong>on</strong>g-term damageassociated with an emergency situati<strong>on</strong>.Know what to doThe first step in creating an emergency manualis to have a group of knowledgeable individualswithin your company identify and prioritizerisks. Once this process is complete, determineand write down what resources are available andhow each situati<strong>on</strong> will be handled.At minimum, every crew should have a list ofemergency teleph<strong>on</strong>e numbers. It’s importantto point out however, that you cannot alwaysdepend <strong>on</strong> the local fire department or rescueteam to be able to handle all emergencies. In thecase of an injured worker, the family should benotified immediately and the company shouldarrange to have family transported to thehospital, if necessary.Knowing what agencies to notify is also animportant aspect of emergency management.For example, in the event of a worker fatality,OSHA must be notified within eight hours. Manyc<strong>on</strong>tractors have taken advantage of the robustec<strong>on</strong>omy to grow their businesses and take<strong>on</strong> additi<strong>on</strong>al equipment to keep up withdemand.With more equipment in the marketplacecomes more risk, not <strong>on</strong>ly from liability and<str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>reased financing, but from theft. Whilethe str<strong>on</strong>g ec<strong>on</strong>omy is good for c<strong>on</strong>tractors,it’s been equally as good for thieves, who are<str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>reasingly taking more equipment fromjobsites and equipment owners’ yards eachyear.According to Nati<strong>on</strong>al Equipment Register(NER), theft is the most frequently reportedloss by heavy equipment owners, outpacingStatistics show smaller, easy-to-move machinery is the overwhelming choice of thieves.Skid steers are the most frequently stolen items because their size allows thieves to easilyload and transport them <strong>on</strong> a small trailer.collisi<strong>on</strong>, fire, vandalism and other claims.There is no c<strong>on</strong>crete number for what theftactually causes in terms of loss because manythefts go unreported, but industry estimatesshow it as high as $1 billi<strong>on</strong> a year. That<str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>ludes the loss of machinery, insurance costs,downtime that can lead to penalties for notmeeting schedule deadlines and other outlaysthat may result.What’s stolenStatistics show smaller, easy-to-movemachinery is the overwhelming choice ofthieves. Skid steers are high <strong>on</strong> the list becausetheir size allows thieves to easily load andtransport them <strong>on</strong> a small trailer. A recentNER report showed skid steers were themost frequently stolen items, accounting for33 percent of all thefts. Also popular am<strong>on</strong>gthieves are generators because they can betransported using a trailer hitch. Backhoeloaders accounted for 15 percent of allthefts because their versatility makes themprofitable and easily sold, while pieces such asexcavators and wheel loaders combined madeup <strong>on</strong>ly 10 percent of thefts.The reas<strong>on</strong>s for equipment theft vary.According to the NER, the reward for a thieffar outweighs the risk. Heavy equipmentoften has little or no physical machine or sitesecurity, so it’s easy to steal, valuable and easyto sell. Recovery rates are extremely low, 10percent to 15 percent, making the thief’s riskminimal. When an item is recovered, often noarrest is made.Adding to the thief’s chances of gettingaway are the time and place of most thefts.Nearly all occur <strong>on</strong> jobsites during holidaysand weekends, when no <strong>on</strong>e is around to


m<strong>on</strong>itor activity. That often gives thievesseveral days before any<strong>on</strong>e detects a piece ofequipment is g<strong>on</strong>e. Many jobsites lack str<strong>on</strong>ganti-theft measures such as moti<strong>on</strong> detecti<strong>on</strong>and lighting, video m<strong>on</strong>itoring or even simplethings such as fencing. The NER’s reportshowed 70 percent of stolen equipment wastaken from a worksite, while <strong>on</strong>ly 30 percentwas taken from an equipment owner’s shop orequipment yard.So what’s an equipment owner to do whenit comes to loss preventi<strong>on</strong>? There are severalanswers, many of which are easy to implementand cost little m<strong>on</strong>ey compared to the costsassociated with losing a piece of equipment.GPS systems allowc<strong>on</strong>stant m<strong>on</strong>itoringExperts agree that good fleet managementis a key tool in reducing your chances of theft.By being vigilant, you can alleviate the riskof your machinery ending up in an aucti<strong>on</strong>or chop shop, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>rease your chance ofrecovery if it is stolen.It’s essential to keep detailed records ofyour equipment, especially the ProductIdentificati<strong>on</strong> Number (PIN) or serial numberof your machine and its main comp<strong>on</strong>ents.The PIN number is like the VIN <strong>on</strong> your carand allows for identificati<strong>on</strong> if a machine isstolen and recovered. Many experts believe inregistering your equipment with groups suchas NER, which keeps a database of equipmentand can be used by law enforcement if itsuspects a machine is stolen.Am<strong>on</strong>g the more sophisticated managementopti<strong>on</strong>s are electr<strong>on</strong>ic means of trackingequipment. There are several GPS (globalpositi<strong>on</strong>ing satellite)-based systems <strong>on</strong> themarket, such as Komatsu’s KOMTRAX wirelessm<strong>on</strong>itoring system, which allow users to m<strong>on</strong>itorand track equipment c<strong>on</strong>tinuously. The machineis equipped with a device that is linked to GPSand users can go to their computers to find outvital informati<strong>on</strong> such as locati<strong>on</strong>, service-meterreadings, and daily hours of operati<strong>on</strong> as well aserror codes, fuel c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> and fluid levels.While most GPS systems weren’t designed toprevent theft, by their nature they are a deterrentto would-be criminals.When not in use, equipment should be parked in a fenced-in area that c<strong>on</strong>tains barbedor razor wire, if possible. Fencing should have a heavy-duty gate with a case-hardenedchain and high-security padlock.If criminals know the machines have GPStracking devices, they are less likely to takethem. Some systems come with an automaticnotificati<strong>on</strong> system that alerts the ownerwhen a machine is moved during hoursof n<strong>on</strong>producti<strong>on</strong>. Older machines can beretrofitted with the systems. Of course, ifa machine is stolen, being able to track itslocati<strong>on</strong> will make it easier to find.Many newer systems come with suchfeatures as theft preventi<strong>on</strong> through meansof engine lock or “geofencing.” Engine lockallows equipment users to prevent the enginefrom being started or c<strong>on</strong>tinuing to run. Userscan disable the engine during n<strong>on</strong>productivehours, or turn the engine off remotely whenan alert shows the machine is moving during C<strong>on</strong>tinued . . .GPS systems, such asKomatsu’s Komtraxwireless m<strong>on</strong>itoringsystem, allow usersto m<strong>on</strong>itor and trackequipment c<strong>on</strong>tinuously.If criminals know themachines have GPStracking devices, they areless likely to take them.


Several methods deter equipment theft. . . c<strong>on</strong>tinuedthese times. Geofencing allows the user toset boundaries for the machine and remotelydisable it if an alert says it’s g<strong>on</strong>e outside thepredetermined area.Secure equipmentThere are also several ways to secure amachine, such as using a locking mechanicaldevice that prevents the c<strong>on</strong>trols from moving.You’ve probably seen something similar foryour car <strong>on</strong> televisi<strong>on</strong>. A bar-like device is put<strong>on</strong> the steering wheel to prevent it from beingmoved. The same c<strong>on</strong>cept is used for manypieces of heavy equipment, with most rangingin price from less than $100 to about $200.Anchoring or immobilizing machinery byusing a cable or chain can be an effective meansof securing equipment as well. Other methodsof immobilizing the machine <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>lude removingbatteries or wires and lowering blades andbuckets; removing tires for machines thatw<strong>on</strong>’t be needed right away; and disabling orremoving trailer hitches for towed equipment.Of course, d<strong>on</strong>’t leave equipment <strong>on</strong> a trailerunattended. Unload it and secure it to the trailerhitch with a cable or chain.Other comm<strong>on</strong> methods of securingequipment when not in use <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>lude putting itSecuring equipment when not in use is vital. Avoid leaving a machine unattended <strong>on</strong> atrailer. Unload it and secure it to the trailer hitch with a cable or chain.in as secure a locati<strong>on</strong> as possible and parkingall equipment together in a single row so amissing piece would be noticed right away.You could positi<strong>on</strong> larger equipment in acircle, with smaller equipment inside the ring— or lift smaller equipment in the air with alarger piece.Comm<strong>on</strong> methods areeffective deterrentsSome of the most effective methods of theftpreventi<strong>on</strong> are the simplest, such as postingwarning signs <strong>on</strong> the property and puttingup fencing and maintaining it throughout theproject. Fencing should be see-through, suchas chain link, as high as possible and c<strong>on</strong>tainbarbed or razor wire, if it’s feasible. D<strong>on</strong>’t pilematerials <strong>on</strong> either side of the fence that wouldallow some<strong>on</strong>e to climb it. Other barriers, suchas low walls, posts, dirt berms or ditches, mayprevent drive offs.If possible, have <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e entrance/exitto the site, and secure it with a heavy-dutygate. Spot-welding hinge pins will preventeasy removal, and a case-hardened chain andhigh-security padlock are essential. Limit thenumber of keys issued to the fenced area.Limiting the number of keys for equipmentcan be helpful too. Make a note of who haskeys and make it policy to remove keys frommachines when not in use. Keep them in asafe or lockable storage area when not in themachine.Whenever possible, use lights, <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>ludingmoti<strong>on</strong> sensors, and video m<strong>on</strong>itoring.Report loss quicklyHowever you choose to limit theft is apers<strong>on</strong>al decisi<strong>on</strong>, but there are some thingsthat should be comm<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g all equipmentusers. Similar to a jobsite safety plan, youshould have a theft preventi<strong>on</strong> policy andsecurity plan that set procedures that limityour exposure to theft.If a theft does occur, report it immediatelyand work closely with law enforcement,giving them as much informati<strong>on</strong> as possible.The so<strong>on</strong>er you report the loss, the better thechance of recovery is. n

But specs al<strong>on</strong>ed<strong>on</strong>’t tell the whole story of how a machineis going to perform in the field. For that, youneed field testing, which Komatsu recentlyc<strong>on</strong>ducted for its PC300LC-7 and PC300HD-7excavators.At the Komatsu Proving Grounds inAntioch, Ill., the product marketing group andthe engineering test group brought in a highlyexperienced, independent operator to testthe PC300s against two leading competitiveexcavators. The goal was to determine howthe machines stacked up against each other.“With the introducti<strong>on</strong> this year of manynew machines with Tier 3-compliant engines,we wanted to see for ourselves where westood against the competiti<strong>on</strong>,” said KomatsuExcavator Product Manager Peter Robs<strong>on</strong>.The Komatsu PC300HD-7, with its PC300 upper structure <strong>on</strong> a PC400-size bottom,dem<strong>on</strong>strated a 20-percent, over-the-side lift advantage over two highly regardedcompetitive excavators in a recent Komatsu-sp<strong>on</strong>sored test of new Tier 3 machines.“Specifically, we wanted test results for truckloading, trenching and lifting — and to seehow we compared in terms of fuel ec<strong>on</strong>omy.”With the results now in, Robs<strong>on</strong> saysit’s clear that the Komatsu PC300LC-7and Komatsu PC300HD-7 are “flagshipmachines” that have significant performanceand producti<strong>on</strong> advantages over the topcompetitive brands.The resultsIn the truck-loading productivity test, all theexcavators loaded similar amounts of materialin the same time frame, but the Komatsuunits used 6 percent to 10 percent less fuel toaccomplish the task.“We suspected that our ecot3 engine wasvery efficient relative to the competiti<strong>on</strong>, andthe test c<strong>on</strong>firmed it,” reported Robs<strong>on</strong>. “Fuelefficiency is definitely <strong>on</strong> everybody’s mindthese days and it was <strong>on</strong>e of our top prioritiesin developing the new engine. With the highcost of diesel fuel, 6 percent to 10 percentrepresents a c<strong>on</strong>siderable savings throughoutthe life of the machine.”In the trenching test, the Komatsuadvantage was even clearer, with the PC300pulling 77 feet in 15 minutes, compared to 65feet and 62 for the competitive excavators.That’s 18 percent more trench than <strong>on</strong>ecompetitor and 24 percent more trench thanthe other.“We attribute our trench-pulling success totwo primary factors,” explained Robs<strong>on</strong>. “Oneis our Power Max functi<strong>on</strong>, which providesan 8.5-sec<strong>on</strong>d power boost. If the operatoruses it at the proper time, when he’s goingin for his first bite of material in the bottom


of the trench, it makes a huge difference inproductivity. We str<strong>on</strong>gly recommend thatall operators experiment with Power Max tolearn firsthand what a difference it makes. Theother factor is our Komatsu bucket, which hasan excellent trenching profile.”The lift test, c<strong>on</strong>ducted with buckets off andusing a load cell, showed a dist<str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>t advantagefor Komatsu’s heavy-duty PC300HD-7, whichfeatures a PC300 upper structure <strong>on</strong> a PC400bottom.“Nobody else offers that type ofcombinati<strong>on</strong>,” Robs<strong>on</strong> pointed out. “Itsubstantially <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>reases stability in anylifting applicati<strong>on</strong>, especially over the side.Our test showed a 20 percent over-the-sidelift advantage with the PC300HD-7. After graduating from the prestigious Universityof Tokyo in 1975 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, hejoined Komatsu because, in his words, “That’s where the largeequipment was.”Iwata’s first assignment with Komatsu was with the Researchand Development (R&D) divisi<strong>on</strong>’s design engineering team,where he was put <strong>on</strong> a project to help develop the company’sfirst 100-t<strong>on</strong> dump truck. In the late 1970s, he accompanied theprototype 100-t<strong>on</strong> truck to Spain for two years of mine site testing.After testing, the HD1200M was released to the market and hasbeen a very successful product for Komatsu.S<str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>e then, Iwata has served as design manager for articulateddump trucks, <str<strong>on</strong>g>inc</str<strong>on</strong>g>luding a three-year posting in Norway — andas General Manager of Komatsu’s C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> EquipmentTechnical Center #2 in Japan, where he oversaw the design ofrubber-tire machines.In August 2004, he was appointed Executive Vice President,North American R&D Divisi<strong>on</strong>. In the positi<strong>on</strong>, he oversees theactivities of Research and Development pers<strong>on</strong>nel in both Peoria,Ill., and Chattanooga, Tenn. “I still love big equipment, so forme, the positi<strong>on</strong> I have here in America is great because I get towork <strong>on</strong> mining trucks again — and equipment doesn’t get muchbigger than that,” said Iwata.When he’s not <strong>on</strong> the job, Iwata enjoys playing golf. “I’m notthat good, but it’s fun for me. And like all golfers, I hope to getbetter.”QQUESTION: How important is Research &Development (R&D) to Komatsu?ANSWER: It’s vitally important. That’s whyKomatsu spends more than three percentof total sales <strong>on</strong> R&D. That’s a significantcommitment year-in and year-out, butnecessary for us to remain a leader in theequipment industry.Globally, we are the No. 2 manufacturer ofheavy equipment. For us to close the gap <strong>on</strong>No. 1, we must be innovative and we mustdevelop new and better equipment before theydo. At Komatsu, we d<strong>on</strong>’t believe in copyingwhat somebody else has d<strong>on</strong>e. We c<strong>on</strong>siderourselves a pace-setting company and R&D is acrucial aspect of that.QUESTION: Give us some examples of recentKomatsu R&D successes.ANSWER: Much of our emphasis in recentyears has been <strong>on</strong> engine development to meetemissi<strong>on</strong>s regulati<strong>on</strong>s. Our Tier 3-compliantecot3 engine is a good example of R&D success.It’s in our newest machines and is workingvery well, delivering both better fuel ec<strong>on</strong>omyand higher horsepower. We’re very pleasedwith the way it’s performing.R&D is also a crucial part of Komatsu’s“Unique and Unrivaled” products strategy,whereby we are producing specific machinesthat are clearly and dem<strong>on</strong>strably superior toany competitive products. Recent examples ofthose would be the WA600-6 wheel loader andD155AX-6 (Sigma) dozer, both of which aresignificantly more productive and efficient thananything else in their class.QUESTION: In North America, what isKomatsu’s R&D emphasis?ANSWER: Komatsu operates under the c<strong>on</strong>ceptof “Mother” Technical Centers. For most


products, the Mother Tech Center is in Japan,but our Peoria plant is Komatsu’s MotherCenter for mining trucks and Chattanooga isthe Mother Center for small dozers, so those areareas of emphasis for us. Komatsu engineersare also involved at each North Americanmanufacturing plant to customize and modifymachines for this market.QUESTION: What kind of things are youworking <strong>on</strong> right now?ANSWER: (Laughs) We d<strong>on</strong>’t want to giveaway secrets so we can’t reveal everything.Also, it’s called research for a reas<strong>on</strong>.Sometimes the research tells us that certainplans will not work, so we d<strong>on</strong>’t like to talk alot about what we’re working <strong>on</strong> because itmay not pan out. Generally speaking however,we’re working hard right now <strong>on</strong> making ourequipment more cost effective.QUESTION: I would assume improving fuelefficiency is <strong>on</strong>e thing you’re working <strong>on</strong> totry to improve cost effectiveness.ANSWER: Certainly. Fortunately, ourfuel efficiency is very good relative to thecompetiti<strong>on</strong>, so it’s not like we have to playcatch-up — but yes, we are working to makeour equipment even more fuel efficient.It’s important to note, however, that fuelefficiency is <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e part of cost effectivenessas it relates to c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and miningequipment. Our real effort is to help customerslower their overall owning and operating costsrelative to producti<strong>on</strong>. In other words, helpmining customers reduce their cost per t<strong>on</strong> andc<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> customers lower their cost peryard. The high cost of fuel is a very importantpart of that equati<strong>on</strong>, but it’s still <strong>on</strong>ly apart. There are many other factors such asacquisiti<strong>on</strong> cost, repair and maintenance costs,capacity, cycle times and availability that alsoimpact equipment cost effectiveness.QUESTION: If you look into your crystalball, what do you see happening in thec<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> equipment industry over thenext decade or so?ANSWER: I’m not sure there will be anyrevoluti<strong>on</strong>ary changes, but certainly there willbe evoluti<strong>on</strong>ary improvements to equipment.For instance, I think there will be significantpowertrain management advances such ashybrid or electric drive. The automobile industrywill probably give us a good indicati<strong>on</strong> of wherewe might be going, especially for trucks.QUESTION: When a c<strong>on</strong>tractor or miningcustomer hears the name Komatsu, what doyou want to be the first word that pops into hishead?ANSWER: Reliability.
