<strong>Information</strong> bulletin, ND (DT) 2013-141.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 <strong>National</strong> <strong>Dairy</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, DeemedUniversity (here-in-after referred to asthe <strong>Institute</strong>), serves as the prime centrefor <strong>Research</strong>, Extension and ManpowerDevelopment Programmes of the countryin the field of <strong>Dairy</strong>ing. The <strong>Institute</strong> hasdeveloped from the erstwhile Imperial<strong>Institute</strong> of Animal Husbandry and <strong>Dairy</strong>ingestablished at Bangalore in 1923. The maincampus of NDRI is now located at Karnal inHaryana State. It has two regional stations:Southern Regional Station at Bangalore andEastern Regional Station located at Kalyani(West Bengal).of milk production and processing underfarm and field conditions; dissemination ofnew technologies to farms and industry.1.2.5 Training and Demonstration: OrganizingShort period training programmes anddemonstration of package of practices forfield applications.1.2.6 Collaboration: Collaborating with nationaland international research and traininginstitutions in dairying and allied fields forexchange of information and advancingnew knowledge, both in basic and appliedfields of dairy science.1.3 Location and climateAdministrative Block NDRI, Karnal1.2 Objectives of the <strong>Institute</strong>1.2.1 <strong>Dairy</strong> Education: Organizing and conductingprogrammes both at the undergraduate andpost-graduate levels in various branches ofdairy science to meet manpower needs ofthe country.1.2.2 Study of <strong>Dairy</strong> Production: <strong>Research</strong> onlivestock nutrition, growth, reproduction,physiology, genetics/breeding andmanagement to produce milk efficientlyand economically.1.2.3 Study of Milk and its Processing: Chemistry,microbiology, quality control and technologyof milk and milk products, design anddevelopment of dairy equipment.1.2.4 Study and survey of Economics,Management and Extension: Economics1.3.1 <strong>National</strong> <strong>Dairy</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> is locatedon the northern outskirts of Karnal cityin Haryana, on the <strong>National</strong> Highway No.1, about 125 km North of Delhi. It is wellconnected by road and rail being on themain trunk route connecting Delhi withAmritsar and Chandigarh.1.3.2 The elevation of Karnal is 250 meters,above mean sea level, latitude 29.43 N andlongitude 77.2 E. Minimum temperaturefalls to near freezing point in winter andmaximum goes up to 45°C in summer. Theannual rainfall is about 70 cm.1.4 Organization1.4.1 The Director is the administrative Headof the <strong>Institute</strong> and its regional stations.He is assisted by three Joint Directorsin administration, coordination ofacademic, research and extensionactivities of various divisions andregional stations.1.4.2 Various research, academic and consultancyactivities of the <strong>Institute</strong> are organized in<strong>National</strong> dairy research institute 1


<strong>Information</strong> bulletin, ND (DT) 2013-14the areas of dairy production, processingand management on the subject-matterbasis through different Divisions/ Sections,namely, <strong>Dairy</strong> Cattle Breeding, LivestockProduction and Management, <strong>Dairy</strong>Cattle Nutrition, <strong>Dairy</strong> Cattle Physiology,<strong>Dairy</strong> Chemistry, <strong>Dairy</strong> Engineering,<strong>Dairy</strong> Microbiology, <strong>Dairy</strong> Technology,Animal Biochemistry, Forage <strong>Research</strong> &Management, <strong>Dairy</strong> Economics, Statistics &Management, <strong>Dairy</strong> Extension and AnimalBiotechnology.1.5 Facilities in EducationThere are modern facilities for delivery oflectures as the classrooms are providedwith internet & multimedia gadgets.Each Division has well equipped UG &PG Laboratories for conduct of practicalclasses. For Post-graduate research work,well equipped specialized laboratoriesare available in different Divisions. Mostof the faculty have international exposureand possess degrees earned from reputedIndian and foreign universities. Additionallysubject-matter specialists from differentcountries of the world come to the <strong>Institute</strong>as consultants on teaching/research/assignments. The teaching curricula areperiodically updated keeping in view ofthe recent scientific developments andto fulfill the needs of the fast developingdairy industry. Centres of excellence inmilk production, milk processing andbiotechnology have been established atthe <strong>Institute</strong> under the financial assistancefrom UNDP/ICAR/DBT. The <strong>Institute</strong> hasseven hostels with modern facilities, ofwhich two are exclusively for girl students.Married students are also provided withseparate hostel facilities. An InternationalHostel is also available for the studentscoming from abroad.1.6 Facilities in <strong>Dairy</strong> ProductionAnimal Biotechnology CentreThe <strong>Institute</strong> maintains a Livestock herdhaving about 1600 animals consisting ofdifferent breeds of cattle (Karan Swiss,Karan Fries, Tharparkar, Sahiwal), Murrahbuffaloes and goats. The animals arebeing maintained and fed as per standardscientific practices. Several programmesare being carried out for attaining higherproductivity per animal. Modern State ofArt Milking Parlours – Flat Barn and Vario-Tendom systems have been commissionedfor efficient and clean milk production. Theaverage production of milk per day in theCattle Yard varies between 3500 and 4500liters during different months. The animalsare managed under loose housing system.the elite cows and buffaloes, the State of Artshelter system with facilities of individualanimal feeding and data recording areavailable. A fodder farm of approximately400 hectares supplies fresh green fodderslike To manage Maize, Cowpea, Berseemand Oats. A well equipped workshopis available for maintaining the farmequipment and machinery. Model dairyunits for demonstration of package ofpractices with high producing dairy cowsand buffaloes are also maintained for thebenefit of farmers and trainees.2<strong>National</strong> dairy research institute


<strong>Information</strong> bulletin, ND (DT) 2013-141.7 Facilities in Milk ProcessingA well equipped dairy plant for handling10,000 litres milk per day was installed in1962 and renovated in the year 1984. Basicequipments are available for processingdifferent types of milk, fat rich products,indigenous milk products, condensed anddried milk products, various types of cheeseand fermented milk products. Facilities areavailable for the product development andto give practical training to the studentsfor familiarizing them with the operationalaspects of a commercial dairy. During theyear 1989 a Revolving Fund Scheme wasintroduced in Experimental <strong>Dairy</strong> underAP cess Fund Project by the Ministry ofAgriculture. In the year 2004, ExperimentalA view of Model <strong>Dairy</strong> Planthandle 60,0000 liters of milk per day witha capital investment of Rs.11 crore. In thefirst phase of the project, the dairy plantis equipped with facilities for processingand packing of market milk, ice cream andghee. During the second phase, facilities forcondensing and drying operation wouldbe added. Students of NDRI are trained inthe various operations in the plant so thatthey get necessary exposure of managingthe manufacturing operations undercommercial environment. This gives themnecessary skills and self confidence tomanage middle level managerial positionsin the dairy industry.1.9 Consultancy ServicesStudents working in <strong>Dairy</strong> Plant, SRS of NDRI,Bangalore<strong>Dairy</strong> has been granted InternationalStandards Certification for its quality andFood Safety Policy i.e. ISO 9001:2000HACCP-15000. In March 2010, Experimental<strong>Dairy</strong> has been certified for ISO 9001:2008& HACCP 15000.1.8 Model <strong>Dairy</strong> PlantWith the objective of providing facilities forimparting in-plant training to the studentsof NDRI Deemed University, a commercialdairy has been established in the campusof NDRI under the auspices of OperationFlood Programme. The dairy plant hasState of the Art Facilitates for variousprocesses. The plant has been designed toIn pursuance of the policy of Government ofIndia which lays stress on the developmentof domestic technology and its effectivetransfer to the industry, a ConsultancyProcessing Cell (CPC) has been constituted.The reservoir of technology developedon the basis of R&D work done at the<strong>Institute</strong> is transferred for the infusionof science and technology in the areaof <strong>Dairy</strong> Production, <strong>Dairy</strong> Processingand <strong>Dairy</strong> Management on professionalbasis through the consultancy services.The CPC extends help for strengtheningthe dairy industry in the country byproviding R&D support towards newproduct/process development, equipmentdevelopment, problem solving researchand also undertakes sponsored researchprogrammes. <strong>Information</strong> bulletin, ND (DT) 2013-14are also provided for the preparation oftechno-economic feasibility reports fornew projects, vetting of project proposalsreceived through financial institutions,testing of dairy products for export/importetc. Specialized training programmesare also conducted at this <strong>Institute</strong> fromtime to time for imparting training tothe students entrepreneurs. The revenueearned through the consultancy servicesis utilized for strengthening the R&Dinfrastructure of the <strong>Institute</strong>.1.10 <strong>National</strong> Library in <strong>Dairy</strong>ingThe <strong>Institute</strong> Library has an impressivecollection of literature on <strong>Dairy</strong> Science andrelated subjects. More than 200 periodicalsare subscribed to keep track of the currentscientific/technical developments. Thereare 89,451 volumes which includes 51,045books, 32,457 bound journals, 4,186 theses,268 microfiches, 1,500 CDs. Library has anexcellent computer section having fiftyworkstations for students and staff of the<strong>Institute</strong>. Students use these to get currentinformation in the advanced research areasand for communication. The Library alsoprovides Internet, Email, Documentation,Reference, Current Awareness Services,CD- ROM Literature scanning throughCD-ROM of CAB Abstracts, Food ScienceTechnology Abstracts, AGRIS, DerwentBiotechnology Abstracts, Indian Standardson CD-ROM and ISO Standards of milk anddairy products on CD-ROM.The Library also provides Photocopying,Document Scanning and Printing facility.Computerised Issue-Return and reservationof books is done by using LIBSYS Librarysoftware Packages with Web OPAC.The Library of NDRI is an active partner ofNAIP Sub-project “Strengthening of DigitalLibrary and <strong>Information</strong> Managementunder NARS (errant)”. The projecthas major mandate to have a unioncatalogue of all participating librarieswith integration/collaboration of OnlineComputer Library Center (OCLC)”. In thisproject the participating libraries are touploaded their catalogue/ database ofall the available books journals and otherresources on OCLC platform in MARC21format. Presently 45,000 catalogue recordsof Library, NDRI available on World Cat.In view of non-standard formats, dataconversion issues and other limitationsin existing Libsys Library managementsystem and advance features andcompliance to international standards ofKoha-LMS, NAIP approved additional fundsof Rs. 2 lakhs for implementation of Kohaunder the grant sub-project. Library hassuccessfully migrated catalogue recordsof books (46184), Theses (3663), Standards(2981),Annual reports (1001) and pamphlets (1500)etc. except Hindi books and periodicals. Atpresent, library is in process of migration ofperiodical records and currently receivedliterature.1.11 Computer FacilitiesLibrary at SRS of NDRI, BangaloreComputer Centre is a central facilityto provide computational support andtraining to the scientists, students, researchscholars and the administration. There isa well established Computer Laboratory4<strong>National</strong> dairy research institute

A largenumber of software packages such asLIMDEP, LSML-76, MATLAB, MS-Office2003/2007, MySQL Server 2008, SAS 9.2,SPSS 18, SYSTAT, TORA, etc., are availablein different environments, i.e., LINUX,Windows/Windows Server (98, 2000, 2008,XP, NT).The Agriculture <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Information</strong>System (ARIS) cell established with the helpof ICAR is fully functional with the internetand e-mail connectivity through <strong>National</strong>Knowledge Network (NKN) node (1gbps)provided by the <strong>National</strong> Informatics Centre(NIC) Govt. of India and through leased lineprovided by ERNET India Ltd. The <strong>Institute</strong>has a Local Area Network (LAN) connectingall the divisions/sections through opticalfiber/UTP cable to cover the main buildingand ADSL switches for distantly locatedbuildings, providing connectivity to allthe Scientists, Technical/ AdministrativeOfficers/ Students.Student hostels are also connected to<strong>Institute</strong> LAN through Wi-Fi network toenable the students to access internet andlibrary resources round the clock.ARIS cell is also undertaking theimplementation of ICAR sponsoredprograms like Personnel Management<strong>Information</strong> System (PERMISNet), <strong>National</strong><strong>Information</strong> System for AgricultureEducation Network (NISAGENet), Project<strong>Information</strong>Management System (PIMSNet) andIntelligent Reporting System (IRS), etc.A video conferencing facility is alsooperational at the <strong>Institute</strong>.Computer Centre at SRS of NDRI, BangaloreThe <strong>Institute</strong> has a Student’s Counselingand Placement Cell, to which a seniorfaculty member acts as Chairman. Themain objective of the Cell is to collectand disseminate the information relatedto the job opportunities in private andgovernment sectors and to invite variousorganizations for campus interviews.Student’s counseling is also done at timesof the advancement of their career inrespective subject matter/ discipline areas.The university has a very impressive trackrecord of placement in highly competitiveprofessions both within and outside thecountry.1.12 Technology Business IncubatorTechnology Business Incubator has beenestablished at NDRI, Karnal with the broadobjective of promoting knowledge-basedand innovation-driven dairy enterprises inthe country. <strong>Information</strong> bulletin, ND (DT) 2013-14resource sharing arrangement to supportbudding entrepreneurs among studentsand technocrats from all over the country.The Centre has full time managementteam that has extensive experience inentrepreneurship, product development, andmarketing, securing venture capital fundingand organizational development.2.0 REGIONAL STATIONS2.1 Southern Regional Station2.1.1 Southern Regional Station of NDRI is locatedin Adugodi, Hosur Road, <strong>National</strong> HighwayNo.7 about 7 Km far from BangaloreCity and Cantonment Railway Stations.Bangalore is well known for its salubriousclimate with the maximum temperature ataround 37°C and minimum temperature atabout 8°C. The average rainfall of the city isabout 100 cm per year.2.1.2 The Campus is engaged in research,teaching, training, transfer of technologyand consultancy activities throughfollowing sections: <strong>Dairy</strong>Chemistry & Microbiology, <strong>Dairy</strong> Technology,<strong>Dairy</strong> Engineering, <strong>Dairy</strong> Production,Education & Training, Economics andExtension.2.1.3 The Campus has the necessary infrastructureneeded for milk production, processing ofmilk; transfer of technology and to imparteducation and training. The fodder farmof 24 hectares raises high yielding foddercrops round the year for a herd of about250 animals. The experimental dairy planthas the capacity to process 1000 lit. ofmilk/day. A variety of dairy products aremanufactured and sold through the milkparlour. The library holds 12329 books,10,252 bound volumes, 1,053 thesis and1,259 reprints and subscribes for variousIndian and Foreign Journals relevant tovarious disciplines of dairy science throughEntrance to SRS of NDRI, BangaloreCERA in addition to subscription for hardcopies of about 30 Indian Journals. TheCampus has good hostel and guest housefacilities for the students and visitors. Thestaff dispensary meets the medical needsof the staff and students.2.1.4 Post graduate programmes in <strong>Dairy</strong>Technology & PG and Ph.D programmesin <strong>Dairy</strong> Engineering, and dissertation inpostgraduate and Ph.D programmes invarious disciplines of dairying are offeredat this Campus. Eachsemester is of 18 to 19 weeks duration.• Summer vacation of 6 to 7 week duration.• Regular academic sessions.• Strict adherence of academic calendar andacademic regulations.3.1 <strong>National</strong> Diploma in <strong>Dairy</strong> Technology (<strong>Dairy</strong> Technology)3.1.1 <strong>National</strong> Diploma in <strong>Dairy</strong> Technology(NDD) will be offered from the year 2013 atSouthern Regional Station of the <strong>Institute</strong>,Bangalore. This diploma programme offersintensive training in dairy processingand quality control of milk and dairyproducts, engineering aspects of dairyprocessing equipments and dairy businessmanagement.3.1.2 The duration of the ND (<strong>Dairy</strong> Technology)is three years. The course is run undersemester system. One academic yearconsists of two semesters each of about 18weeks duration. The students are given onesemester In-plant Training in a Commercial<strong>Dairy</strong> Plant.3.1.3 The candidate must have passed 10 thStandard Examination of the CentralBoard of Secondary Education or any otherexamination within scope and standardfound to be equivalent to the SecondarySchool Examination of an Indian University/Board after a period of 10 years of study.Candidate must have passed the qualifyingexamination as enumerated above securingnot less than 50% of the total marks forGeneral, OBC and UPS categories and 40%of the total marks for SC/ST, Physicallyhandicapped and in-service categories.3.1.4 Admission shall be made on the basis of meritthrough All India Entrance Examinationconducted by the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Dairy</strong> <strong>Research</strong><strong>Institute</strong>, Karnal.3.1.5 One who is appearing for 10 th examinationin the year 2013 can also apply subject tohis/her producing 10 th passing certificateon the date of counseling.4.0 Procedure for Application4.1 EligibilityCandidates having passed their 10 thStandard or equivalent examinationare eligible to apply for the EntranceExamination for ND (DT). The candidatesdue to appear for the final examinationin 2013 may also apply for the EntranceExamination provided they complete theexamination and obtain the results on orbefore 31 st July 2013.The candidates must have secured at least50% marks for General and OBC categoriesand 40% for SC/ST, PH and in-servicecandidates categories.4.2 Application(1) Application for admission shall be made inthe prescribed form meant for the purpose.(2) The application form bears a serial numberat the top left corner on page 1. It maybe used at any time in support of havingsubmitted application and also retain acopy of post office receipt for dispatchthrough registered post or speed post.Without these papers, a candidate shall notbe allowed to appear in examination, in theabsence of admit card.5.0 entrance examination & Selection Procedure5.1 The candidates who fulfill the minimumqualification will be eligible to appear inthe entrance examination. Paperwill be of objective type with multiplechoice questions.(2) The syllabus of written examination forND(DT) programme is appended in theinformation <strong>Bulletin</strong> as Annexure-I.(3) The qualifying marks for the writtenentrance examination will be 75 Marks (60for SC/ST & PH category)(4) The final selection for admission to ND (DT)will be based on merit list prepared on thebasis of marks obtained in the EntranceExamination.(5) Only those students will be registeredwho will complete their qualifyingexamination in all respects latest beforethe commencement of academic session2013-14 (i.e., 31-07-2013).(6) The result will be announced on 10.07.2013and the merit list showing marks of qualifiedcandidates will be displayed on NDRIwebsite.6.0 Counseling process6.1 The short listed candidates will be calledfor counseling on a given date & reportingtime at Southern Regional Station of<strong>National</strong> <strong>Dairy</strong> <strong>Research</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, Adugodi,Bangalore – 560 030. The candidates willmark their attendance on arrival and will beconsidered for counseling. Those reportinglate will have to register arrival time as lateentry in the attendance register and willbe considered for counseling as per latestsituation of seats available at that time. Theseats already filled up will not be disturbedin such situation.6.2 The candidates belonging to PH categorywill be called first and offered seat againstthe category to which they belong. Theseats for PH category are 3% and will be filledwithin the overall number of total seats. If thenumber of PH candidates available is morethan the number of reserved seats for PHcategory then priority will be decided basedon the ranks of entrance examination. The regulations require thatthe students must maintain prescribed minimum attendance of 75% in the classes.20.0 RULES FOR FINES20.1 Fines for absence from the HostelA special fine considered adequate according tothe seriousness of the case will be leviedby the Chief Hostel Warden/Joint Directorfor overnight absence from the Hostelwithout prior permission of the competentauthority.20.2 Such students who do not clear messcharges by the due date will be removedfrom the hostel and disciplinary action asdeemed fit will be taken.20.3 Fine recovered from the students towards latepayment of fees, fines for act of indisciplineetc., will be credited to “R” Deposit and usedfor Students’ Welfare Activities.21 .0 sUMMARY CANCELLATION OF REGISTRATION21.1 The Director may summarily cancel theregistration of any student or group/batch/class of students who indulge(s) in act(s) ofindiscipline, misconduct, violation of rulesand regulations of the <strong>Institute</strong>, strikes,absence from classes without permissionor without any valid reason or in whosecase, the Director has reasons to believethat their continuance in the <strong>Institute</strong>would not be in the best interest of the<strong>Institute</strong>.21.2 The students who have been permanentlydropped from the <strong>Institute</strong> either onaccount of acts of indiscipline, shall notbe eligible to make an application for readmission.21.3 It is the responsibility of the candidates tofurnish full and correct information on theapplication form.
