18 Qatar SITES ConstruCtion Engineer Mohamed Thamim, the Assistant General Manager of projects at Elsewedy Cables, has said that Elsewedy provides a turnkey solution to major companies like Kahramaa, Qatar Petroleum, Ras- Gas, ABB and Areva. Elsewedy specializes in electrical cabling such as extra-high voltage (EHV), medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV). The Elsewedy factory in Qatar can manufacture and supply up to an MV grade of cable. All EHV cables are made in the Elsewedy Cables factory in Egypt. In an interview, Eng Thamim said that Elsewedy provided a whole range of solutions from design, feasibility study, electrical infrastructure and the project management of the cable installation. He described Elsewedy Cables as a member of the electrical infrastructure industry, specializing in cabling, particularly underground and EHV (extra-high voltage) cables used to connect electricity substations. On being asked about the value of the cabling market, Eng Thamim said that in 2008 Kahramaa, which is the main authority in cable laying in Qatar, issued tenders to the value of $2,800 million during Phase 8 of a bid process that is ongoing. Vendors, like Elsewedy, are now awaiting results for Phase 10. Elsewedy is the first cable factory in the State of Qatar. Built on an area of 70,200 m², the factory is in a joint venture with Doha Cables a subsidiary of Aamal Holdings. According to its website, the planned production capacity of the factory is estimated to be a total of 40,000 tons (copper) for the coming five years. The Elsewedy Cables Group has its facility for polymeric compounds, a key component of the PVC (polyvinyl chloride) material for the outer jacket material of the low and medium voltage (LV and MV) cables and HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) material for high and extra high voltage (EHV) cables. The group’s vision is to be one of the top brand names in cable manufacturing. Its cabling products include: *Extra high voltage cables (XLPE 132KV & 220 KV) *High voltage cables 66 KV *Medium voltage cables up to 36 KV *Low voltage cables & earthing conductors up to 1 kV *Low smoke halogen free cables (LSHF & LSF Cables) *Heat-resistant flexible cables *Flexible cables *Control cables *Instrumentation cables *Special cables shielded or unshielded flame retardant cables, fire resistance cables, chemical and alkaline resistance cables *all kind of overhead transmissions lines *Fiber optic cables *OPGW (optical fiber ground wire) When asked about the turnkey solution that Elsewedy Cables offers, Eng Thamim reiterated that the company’s knowledge of different products enabled it to offer operators a product based on the perspective for each solution. He added that the company’s systems integration facilities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Cairo were “used to assemble, configure and test systems and solutions as well as provide the facilities to host integrated factory acceptance testing (IFAT) of various equipment prior to installation in the field”. He said that Elsewedy not only manufactured cable but also designed the cable route. He said: “We give a complete solution, an EPC solution.” Elsewedy Cables works as a subsidiary of Doha Cables which is in a joint venture with the Aamal group. Most of the noted cable makers in the region are members of the Arab Cab (Arab Cable Manufacturers Association founded in 2004) but not all. For example, Oman Fibre Optics which produces optical fibre and fibre optic cable and Teleco Câbles in Tunisia, are not listed as members. There are also many cable companies in the non- Arab countries of Mena (Turkey, Israel and Iran), and these do not, of course, belong to Arab Cab. According to industry sources, when looking at global investments in the Mena cable industry, manufacturing activity by the major global cable groups in this region, other than in Turkey, is relatively limited. The main exception is Nexans, which has a number of interests in North Africa and the Middle East, including Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt as well as Turkey. Prysmian has a substantial presence in Turkey while Corning Cable Systems has manufacturing operations in both Turkey and Egypt. Elsewhere in the region, Draka has a stake in Oman Cables Industry. Except for Corning, US interests in the region are limited to Israel, where the Alpine Group is the largest shareholder in Superior Cables, a company formed from the merger of three established players. There has been some development of cross-border interests in the region, as cable companies based in one country within Mena invest in manufacturing operations in another, either through acquisition or through building green-field operations. Examples of cable companies based in Mena that have established or bought cross-border operations are Saudi Cable Company (Turkey and Bahrain), Riyadh Cables (the UAE) and the Egyptian group El Sewedy (Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Qatar). But the cable industry in Mena remains fragmented, as no really large groups have yet emerged in this region with a pan-national presence comparable with, for example, Nexans, Prysmian or Draka in the European market. This is not surprising as the region is not integrated economically, though there are developing areas of economic co-operation such as the GCC and Maghreb countries. In Egypt the main cable making companies are El Sewedy group, Electro Cable Egypt, Giza Cables Company and International Cable Company. The latter company is a subsidiary of the Nexans group. Cable operations in El Sewedy group include Arab Cables, Egytech Cables, Egytech Telecom Cables & Networks and United Industries. In addition to these larger groups, there are also several other smaller Egyptian cable producers, mainly active in LV energy cables. The Gulf region’s main cable producers are in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. There are three large cable producers in Saudi Arabia: Riyadh Cables, Saudi Cable and Jeddah Cable, each of which produces a range of energy and communication cables. After Saudi Arabia, the UAE is the second largest cable market in the GCC region. Two of the leading UAE-based cable companies are Dubai Cable and National Cable Industries. The Saudi Arabian Riyadh Cable group also has a substantial operation in the UAE. Three smaller cable companies also operate in the UAE: Tekab (part of the GIBCA group), Abu Dhabi Cables and Sharjah Cables. Smaller players include Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. According to industry experts, the cable industry is both highly capital intensive and dependent on the price of raw materials: labour and energy do not account for a significant share of the total end-product cost. Consequently, little cost reduction margins are to be obtained by manufacturing cables locally. However, high transportation costs justify the rational for local production. Elsewedy Cables was chosen as a vendor within Phase 9 of Kahramaa’s infrastructure development plan. Phase 9 included work within the Ezdan project as well as Lusail City. This project starts from design to installation. 2) Lusail City: CP2. The main contractor is Al Jaber and partners. The contract is worth $24,4 million. 3) ABB: Project number 2 – Ezdan and Gharaffa Mall substation. This project is worth QR26,5 million/$7,05 million. 4) Yuksel/Midmac. Elsewedy has a subcontract to divert the current 66KV cable that is obstructing the construction of the Salwa Road Expressway. It has just completed a project for Kahramaa (Contract No: GTC 330) which was worth QR4,185 million. The project was completed on schedule, with no accidents and to the customer’s satisfaction. According to Eng Thamim, one of the objectives of the projects division is to ensure that the client is satisfied and that the project is completed with no accidents. He emphasized that a healthy “balance sheet” is good for the company but “a good reputation is even better”.
