I came to<strong>Berco</strong> almost thirty years ago, when, along with some o<strong>the</strong>r “youngeng<strong>in</strong>eers”, we were set <strong>the</strong> task <strong>of</strong> try<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r anddevelop <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>of</strong> experience and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism bornfrom <strong>the</strong> far-sightedness, ideas and tenacity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company'sfounder. It was <strong>in</strong> this soil that I sunk my roots and, nurtured on <strong>the</strong>precious experience and teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> my predecessors, withgreat enthusiasm and a constant desire to disc<strong>over</strong> new ways<strong>of</strong> see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> future, I have striven constantly to make myknowledge grow.In all <strong>the</strong>se years, I have spent time <strong>in</strong> practically all <strong>the</strong>company's operational areas: Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, Industrial Systems,Investment, Quality, Hot Forg<strong>in</strong>g, Production, Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g andPurchas<strong>in</strong>g.All those I have worked with have contributed to my pr<strong>of</strong>essionalgrowth and it is certa<strong>in</strong>ly thanks also to <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong> stockholderhas decided to give me and <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BERCO “team” <strong>the</strong>task <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to run this great company. And with this very team spirit, pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism and renewedenthusiasm we shall carry on work<strong>in</strong>g, with an eye to <strong>the</strong>future. Front PageHANDING OVERIN THE NAME OF CONTINUITYAfter 19 years as Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director, Giovanni Bertoni wishesfarewell to <strong>the</strong> staff and passes <strong>the</strong> baton to Bruno Saturni,Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director as <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 8th <strong>of</strong> FebruaryOn <strong>the</strong> 8th <strong>of</strong> February, <strong>in</strong> a warm, mov<strong>in</strong>gceremony attended by staff from all<strong>Berco</strong> departments, Giovanni Bertoniformally resigned from his post as Manag<strong>in</strong>gDirector <strong>of</strong> <strong>Berco</strong> and Bruno Saturni was<strong>in</strong>stalled as his successor. It was a solemn occasion, one that willundoubtedly become part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> company. After n<strong>in</strong>eteen years <strong>of</strong> successes, difficulties and challenges, Giovanni Bertoni, gave us a personal account <strong>of</strong> his time asManag<strong>in</strong>g Director and, with a touch <strong>of</strong>nostalgy, bade farewell to <strong>the</strong> company, hisfellow workers and Copparo. Without try<strong>in</strong>gto hide <strong>the</strong> emotional content <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> occasion,Bertoni went back <strong>over</strong> <strong>the</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>arysuccess story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company that has become<strong>the</strong> undisputed leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> undercarriageworld. “There are four reasons for thisextraord<strong>in</strong>ary success,” he said. “The first is<strong>the</strong> human factor, <strong>the</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary capabilitiesand skills <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> differentareas <strong>of</strong> <strong>Berco</strong> that have dedicated <strong>the</strong>mselveswith such enthusiasmand passion to <strong>the</strong>implementation <strong>of</strong>major projects; I mayhave been a fairlygood capta<strong>in</strong>, butwe would never haveachieved <strong>the</strong> resultswe did without suchan excellent crew, such an <strong>in</strong>v<strong>in</strong>cibleteam. The secondreason is <strong>Berco</strong>'sexceptional abilityto come up with <strong>in</strong>novative products to <strong>the</strong>lik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational markets. The third is<strong>Berco</strong>'s remarkable capacity for creat<strong>in</strong>g anddevelop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative products and processtechnologies way ahead <strong>of</strong> its rivals, and<strong>the</strong> fourth is <strong>the</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary support givenby <strong>the</strong> stockholder <strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong><strong>in</strong>vestment: <strong>the</strong> results atta<strong>in</strong>edwould <strong>not</strong> have been possiblewithout belong<strong>in</strong>g to a major<strong>in</strong>dustrial group, which gave itsapproval to our plans and shared<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir implementation”.A success underl<strong>in</strong>ed andacknowledged also by Dr. OlafBerlien, Chairman <strong>of</strong> ThyssenKruppTechnologies, present on <strong>the</strong>occasion to say goodbye toMr. Bertoni and to welcome <strong>the</strong>new Manag<strong>in</strong>g Director: “Not onlydid you run <strong>Berco</strong> as its Manag<strong>in</strong>gDirector but you also restructured it, gave ita new outlook, set it <strong>in</strong> a new mould andbrea<strong>the</strong>d new life <strong>in</strong>to it.You had <strong>the</strong> boldness to take<strong>the</strong> company to a newstrategic level, transform<strong>in</strong>git from a supplier <strong>of</strong> spareparts to a specialist <strong>in</strong>undercarriage componentsfor all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> trackedmach<strong>in</strong>ery. All <strong>the</strong> bigmanufacturers - Komatsu,John Deere and Liebherr -are supported by <strong>Berco</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong>ir presence on <strong>the</strong> worldmarket”.A legacy such as this is undoubtedly anexcit<strong>in</strong>g challenge for <strong>the</strong> person with <strong>the</strong>important task <strong>of</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>over</strong> and press<strong>in</strong>gon from <strong>the</strong>se results towards new goals andnew successes. Bruno Saturni, who hasactually already taken <strong>the</strong> re<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>company, dwelt on this very aspect, stress<strong>in</strong>ghow his sense <strong>of</strong> satisfaction with <strong>the</strong>stockholder's decision to opt for cont<strong>in</strong>uityand place its trust <strong>in</strong> him is matched by a greatsense <strong>of</strong> responsibility. “I tell you that whatI feel today, more than a sense <strong>of</strong> satisfaction,is a great sense <strong>of</strong> responsibility, becausewe, all <strong>of</strong> us, as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Berco</strong> team, must beready to face <strong>the</strong> everyday problems and <strong>the</strong>market competition <strong>in</strong> such a way as to showthat <strong>the</strong> trust that has been placed <strong>in</strong> us is<strong>just</strong>ified”.As a sign <strong>of</strong> recognition for <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong>Giovanni Bertoni and his time spent at <strong>the</strong>helm <strong>of</strong> <strong>Berco</strong>, <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Directors, <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>name</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole workforce, presentedhim with a high-precision, gold-plated model<strong>of</strong> a Liebherr R994B undercarriage and acustom DEI “Imperiale Centenario” bicycle. The day ended with refreshments and <strong>the</strong>customary cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cake. This day <strong>of</strong> festivities, <strong>in</strong> Bertoni's words, marks <strong>the</strong> move towards <strong>the</strong> fourth chapter<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> our company.BN46 > April 20063

<strong>Berco</strong> PeopleNOT JUST TECHNOLOGY IN THE NEWTRACK ROLLER ASSEMBLY DEPARTMENT<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> General Systems Division, headed by Orazio Astolfi,to tell us about his experience <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial stages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>work: from <strong>the</strong> lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foundations for <strong>the</strong> productionl<strong>in</strong>es and automated storage unit to <strong>the</strong> construction<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g.Despite his outgo<strong>in</strong>g, communicative personality, Adrianoat first seems reluctant to acknowledge his role as one<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> protagonists <strong>of</strong> this “adventure”,but when he does start talk<strong>in</strong>g it'sdifficult to stop him, and we realiseMuch has been written <strong>in</strong> recent issues <strong>of</strong> this magaz<strong>in</strong>e about <strong>the</strong> newtrack roller assembly department. Up to now, <strong>the</strong> subject has alwaysbeen approached from a strategic or technical po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view, but <strong>in</strong> thisarticle we want to look at it <strong>in</strong> a different way, through <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> people actually <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> construct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> new build<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> equipment and, f<strong>in</strong>ally, start<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> new production l<strong>in</strong>es.We <strong>in</strong>terviewed some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people who have been work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> newdepartment for months to hear what <strong>the</strong>y have to say and, through<strong>the</strong>ir words, to f<strong>in</strong>d out how <strong>the</strong> various implementation stages <strong>of</strong> thisambitious project actually took place. We asked Adriano Del Vecchio, <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g works department“The <strong>in</strong>itial plan - he tells us -was for a three-span build<strong>in</strong>g, buteven before <strong>the</strong> suppliers haddelivered <strong>the</strong> materials, we knewit would be necessary to add a fourthfor a l<strong>in</strong>e dedicated exclusively to CTLtrack roller assembly. And so we are prepar<strong>in</strong>g an areato <strong>the</strong> south <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> new extension. The land has been bought, <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs clearedand <strong>the</strong> new rout<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public natural gas pipeplanned.Quite a few problems arose <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial preparatorystages. First <strong>of</strong> all, <strong>the</strong>re were two big public electricitypylons, which had to be raised up to allow for <strong>the</strong>height <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new build<strong>in</strong>g. Then <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong>complication <strong>of</strong> lay<strong>in</strong>g suitable foundations for <strong>the</strong>automatic storage unit <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g.This k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> storage unit , weigh<strong>in</strong>g about 12 tonsper square metre, has to be capable <strong>of</strong> withstand<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uous load variations, <strong>in</strong> both weight andposition<strong>in</strong>g. So, we had to make a re<strong>in</strong>forcedconcrete bed, 60 cm thick, and rest it ona set <strong>of</strong> piles (64) go<strong>in</strong>g down to a depth<strong>of</strong> 22 metres. The concrete block was <strong>in</strong>serted<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> floor<strong>in</strong>g like an island, separatedby expanded polyurethane padd<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>thickness 4 cm”.immediately how much effort and enthusiasmhe and his team put <strong>in</strong>to this project. When we f<strong>in</strong>ally get to ask<strong>in</strong>g Adriano, whohas been with <strong>Berco</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce 1992, for his<strong>over</strong>all impression <strong>of</strong> this experience, hesmiles and tells us he's “seen it all before”,mean<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong>se years at <strong>Berco</strong>,this isn't <strong>the</strong> first time he and his colleagueshave had to take on such a demand<strong>in</strong>g task.Adriano's account is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g, and so full<strong>of</strong> little details and anecdotes that we want4BN46 > April 2006

FRANCO BRANCALIONHead <strong>of</strong> Department“This isn't <strong>the</strong> first time <strong>in</strong> my 19 yearsat <strong>Berco</strong> that I've had <strong>the</strong> chance towork on <strong>the</strong> start-up <strong>of</strong> new l<strong>in</strong>es. In<strong>the</strong> 1990s, <strong>in</strong> fact, I was <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> launch <strong>of</strong> some work centres <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> die mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g department. This time it's different though, first <strong>of</strong> allbecause this is an entire department andsecondly because I am now head <strong>of</strong>department. I am really proud andsatisfied that <strong>the</strong> company has putits trust <strong>in</strong> me to carry out thistask”.appo<strong>in</strong>ted head <strong>of</strong> thisnew department. At firstsight, you get <strong>the</strong> feel<strong>in</strong>gthat he is a man whoreally puts a lot <strong>in</strong>to hiswork, and this feel<strong>in</strong>g isborne out entirely by his account. His <strong>Berco</strong> career, which began <strong>in</strong> 1987, has beenlong and varied and, last October, after lots <strong>of</strong> moves andchanges, he was put <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation phases<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> process l<strong>in</strong>es, work<strong>in</strong>g under <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> FrancescoBuriani. As we listen to him, what sh<strong>in</strong>es through yet aga<strong>in</strong> is <strong>the</strong>same passion, dedication and love for <strong>the</strong> factory that hascharacterised <strong>the</strong> many previous generations here at <strong>Berco</strong>.This is <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> spirit that became familiar to us <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>in</strong>terviews we made for <strong>the</strong> newly published book on <strong>the</strong> eightyyears <strong>of</strong> life <strong>of</strong> this great company <strong>of</strong> ours.MICHELE CAGNONIEng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g staff“I'm go<strong>in</strong>g to be <strong>in</strong>charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team <strong>of</strong>four newly recruitedma<strong>in</strong>tenance workers thatwill be look<strong>in</strong>g after thisdepartment. I shall also be handl<strong>in</strong>grelations with spare parts suppliers”.Michele Cagnoni, with <strong>Berco</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce1994, will be <strong>in</strong>charge <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ema<strong>in</strong>tenance. Hehas accumulateda wealth <strong>of</strong>experience <strong>in</strong> robots y s t e m s<strong>in</strong>stallation,work<strong>in</strong>g alongsideGiuliano Neodo. For him too, follow<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stallation stages, work<strong>in</strong>g ona daily basis toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> SIR eng<strong>in</strong>eers on <strong>the</strong>configuration <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> assembly l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> department, has been a new and excit<strong>in</strong>g experience.Giuseppe Friani, with <strong>Berco</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce 1997, comes to meet uswith a big smile. He works <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> systems eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>ficetoge<strong>the</strong>r with Luigi Franch<strong>in</strong>i, under <strong>the</strong>direction <strong>of</strong> Leonardo Bell<strong>in</strong>i, and has been<strong>in</strong>volved for some years with electricaldesign, automation and l<strong>in</strong>e implementation. Here, he is work<strong>in</strong>gspecifically on trackroller lubrication andfill<strong>in</strong>g tests. To helpus understand wha<strong>the</strong>'s do<strong>in</strong>g he takes usto see how thisoperation works.Word <strong>of</strong> our presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> department has gotaround and everybody wants to come and tell usabout <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir personal experiences, but time is runn<strong>in</strong>g out and Francesco Buriani, head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Track Roller Assembly Area, comes up to <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice and exchanges a fewwords with Franco Brancalion, <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>department. We ga<strong>the</strong>r that <strong>the</strong> time has cometo let <strong>the</strong>m get back to work and, before go<strong>in</strong>g,we take a few more photos <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new l<strong>in</strong>es,still clean and sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, which will soon be runn<strong>in</strong>gat full production rate.<strong>Berco</strong> PeopleGIUSEPPE FRIANIEng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g staff“It's a beautiful experience, and it givesyou great satisfaction to see a plan ona sheet <strong>of</strong> paper be<strong>in</strong>g translated <strong>in</strong>toreality, thanks also to your efforts andyour work”.ALESSANDRO FERRANTIWorker“I've been at <strong>Berco</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce last September.I did two weeks <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> old track rollerdepartment and <strong>the</strong>n I was transferredhere, to <strong>the</strong> roller pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e. Mach<strong>in</strong>e ToolsGROWTH PLANS<strong>Berco</strong> expects 2006 to be a year <strong>of</strong> researchand cont<strong>in</strong>uity with past actions"2005 began with slight signs <strong>of</strong> rec<strong>over</strong>y andended with a positive result and significantgrowth as compared to 2004, negatively<strong>in</strong>fluenced by a crisis at global level ".Andrea Prampol<strong>in</strong>i, sales manager for <strong>the</strong>mach<strong>in</strong>e tools division, underl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> efforts<strong>the</strong> company is mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> research anddevelopment <strong>of</strong> quality solutions. What were <strong>in</strong>vestments concentrated on<strong>in</strong> 2005?In our market, <strong>in</strong>vestments have to be plannedand made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> medium-long term if <strong>the</strong>y areto achieve tangible results. <strong>Berco</strong> has alwaysbeen very active <strong>in</strong> this area, both for itsundercarriage components production<strong>in</strong>frastructure and its mach<strong>in</strong>e tools division, which is considerably <strong>in</strong>fluenced by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensepush towards evolution that all <strong>the</strong> company'sproduction technologies are subject to. It isfor this reason that <strong>Berco</strong>, for many yearsnow, has been committed to <strong>in</strong>vestmentsthat can lead to <strong>the</strong> global growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>company, provid<strong>in</strong>g effective responses tocustomers' needs. This mentality has been<strong>the</strong> guid<strong>in</strong>g light <strong>in</strong> reorganisation driveaimed at streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> company's marketapproach. From <strong>the</strong> products po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view, this hasmaterialized <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> a state-<strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>-artCNC orbital gr<strong>in</strong>der, <strong>the</strong> Lynx 2000, formedium-large series production <strong>of</strong> crankshaftsand camshafts: a choice that led an <strong>in</strong>crease<strong>in</strong> sales, <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> company andgreater market visibility, especially<strong>in</strong> Europe. What does be<strong>in</strong>g competitiveon <strong>the</strong> Italian market mean? The Italian market is a very particular market, with ahigh concentration <strong>of</strong> manufacturers and lots <strong>of</strong> <strong>over</strong>lapp<strong>in</strong>gproduct ranges, ei<strong>the</strong>r complete or partial. This fitsentirely <strong>in</strong>to a wider European context, where <strong>the</strong>determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g factors for <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> a sale are strongly<strong>in</strong>fluenced by price. In a period <strong>in</strong> which orders are <strong>not</strong>exactly flourish<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> competition acts as a lever on orderpurchase prices, to <strong>the</strong> detriment above all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> morehighly qualified and better established competitors. However, price alone is <strong>not</strong> enough to orient customer choice. The prospect <strong>of</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g good value for money can, <strong>in</strong>fact, turn <strong>the</strong>ir attention to products with a highertechnology/product content, and hence towards “qualityproducers”.What are <strong>the</strong> factors that determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> purchase <strong>of</strong>a mach<strong>in</strong>e?The performance differences that stood out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pasthave been partly reduced. It is true, though, thatmanufacturers provid<strong>in</strong>g above-average quality standardshave ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed a competitive edge <strong>over</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir rivals.Even though <strong>the</strong> quality factor is <strong>of</strong>ten taken for granted,<strong>the</strong> end user is still strongly conditioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> choiceshe or she makes by <strong>the</strong> reliability and life <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> product.Ano<strong>the</strong>r important factor is <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly widespreaddemand for solutions that can facilitate <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>operators, or mach<strong>in</strong>es with automated systems thatmake <strong>the</strong>m easier to use. What are <strong>Berco</strong>'s goals for 2006?The animat<strong>in</strong>g force with<strong>in</strong> our company is <strong>the</strong> desire toguarantee cont<strong>in</strong>uity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation andexpansion that has dist<strong>in</strong>guished <strong>Berco</strong> throughout <strong>the</strong>whole <strong>of</strong> its long history, with <strong>the</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>growth trends achieved <strong>in</strong> markets, turn<strong>over</strong> and product<strong>in</strong>novation. All <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestments made aim to <strong>in</strong>creasecompetitivity. <strong>Berco</strong> depends above all on its R&D work, which cont<strong>in</strong>ues to be one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>of</strong>its market success. In addition, <strong>the</strong> company is cont<strong>in</strong>uouslyassess<strong>in</strong>g new technological solutions, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> constant driveto atta<strong>in</strong> better value for money, <strong>in</strong>creased pr<strong>of</strong>itabilityand greater customer appeal.6BN45 > Gennaio 2006

SpecialMAKING HISTORYAs most readers already know, a bookrecount<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>Berco</strong>, <strong>of</strong> howit grew from a small craft workshop toa major leader <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world undercarriagemarket, has been published recently. The book, start<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> years when <strong>the</strong>company was first founded, goes through<strong>the</strong> different stages <strong>in</strong> its n<strong>in</strong>ety years <strong>of</strong>history: <strong>the</strong> early pioneer<strong>in</strong>g days <strong>of</strong> VezioBertoni and his partners Roberto Cotti andEdmondo Michel<strong>in</strong>i, <strong>the</strong> war, <strong>the</strong> trade unionstruggles, <strong>the</strong> change <strong>of</strong> generations and<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationalisation.The book ends with chapters on <strong>the</strong> GiovanniBertoni period. The story bases itself on <strong>the</strong> recollections<strong>of</strong> its protagonists, both major and m<strong>in</strong>or,backed up by documents, photographs andreconstructions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different historicaland social contexts. The book has been published by T&M AssociatiEditore and is <strong>the</strong> fruit <strong>of</strong> twelve <strong>in</strong>tensivemonths <strong>of</strong> research and historical reconstructionby <strong>the</strong> authors, work<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong>Market<strong>in</strong>g and Communications staff.LAUNCHING THE BOOKThe book was launched <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>authorities, customers, suppliers and employeespast and present before a capacity audience<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> De Micheli Theatre <strong>in</strong> Copparo, Italy,<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon <strong>of</strong> Saturday, 28th <strong>of</strong> January.Giovanni Bertoni gave us a detailed account<strong>of</strong> his personal experience, with reconstructions<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> strategic choices made dur<strong>in</strong>g hisperiod <strong>of</strong> management and a few amus<strong>in</strong>ganecdotesBN46 > April 20067

“…why is this book important? Becausecultivat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> memory and history <strong>of</strong> companiesis important. The essential th<strong>in</strong>g to rememberis that a company is above all an organisation<strong>of</strong> people who participate, cooperate and makeplans, and this is what makes <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>of</strong> acountry...”.“…<strong>the</strong> story we are told <strong>in</strong> this book epitomises<strong>the</strong> idea that <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>of</strong> a country and acommunity lies <strong>in</strong> its capacity to produce, itscapacity to have skills, its capacity to accumulateand transfer knowledge on a cont<strong>in</strong>uous basis…”Patrizio Bianchi,Rector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> FerraraTo illustrate <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> book on <strong>the</strong> pre-Bertoniyears, references were made to <strong>the</strong> recollections <strong>of</strong>a number <strong>of</strong> ex-employees and o<strong>the</strong>r people l<strong>in</strong>ked<strong>in</strong> some way to <strong>Berco</strong> and its past.Giovanni Bertoni's account was <strong>in</strong>terspersed withcontributions from various public figures with personalconnections with Copparo and <strong>Berco</strong>.First <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> Mayor <strong>of</strong> Copparo, Maria TeresaBertuzzi, who underl<strong>in</strong>ed her great personal l<strong>in</strong>k to<strong>the</strong> factory, where her fa<strong>the</strong>r had worked for more thanforty years. Then <strong>the</strong>re was Dr. Alfredo Sant<strong>in</strong>i, Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Cassa di Risparmio bank, a native <strong>of</strong> Copparo andnephew <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vezio Bertoni's first partner, Cotti.Ano<strong>the</strong>r native <strong>of</strong> Copparo present amongst <strong>the</strong>“…without <strong>the</strong> close relationship between <strong>the</strong> populationand <strong>the</strong> factory, <strong>Berco</strong> wouldn't be what it now is”.Alfredo Sant<strong>in</strong>i,Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cassa di Risparmio bank, Ferrara“…go<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> pages <strong>of</strong> this book, whatstands out immediately is that <strong>the</strong> strongestmotivation underly<strong>in</strong>g this success story is <strong>the</strong> closel<strong>in</strong>k with <strong>the</strong> Copparo community, even now when ithas become a major mult<strong>in</strong>ational company. Whatemerges from <strong>the</strong> pages <strong>of</strong> this book is <strong>the</strong> smell <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> courage, <strong>the</strong> smell <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> efforts, sacrifices, strength and pride <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many people who havehelped to make this company what it is now …”.Maria Teresa Bertuzzi,Mayor <strong>of</strong> Copparo8BN46 > Aprile 2006“…what is very important is that this book, and <strong>the</strong>choice you have made - rightly - to tell it how it is,contradictions and all, is <strong>not</strong> reticent...”.“…what is <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> this experience? Environment & SafetyKeep<strong>in</strong>g an eye on <strong>the</strong> environment:ATMOSPHERIC EMISSIONSIn <strong>the</strong> last issue we said we were go<strong>in</strong>gto look <strong>in</strong>to different aspects <strong>of</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> company's Environmental ManagementSystem which, as we all know, <strong>in</strong> 2000obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> certificate <strong>of</strong> conformity to<strong>the</strong> UNI EN ISO 14001 Standard. As you will remember, last time we looked atwastewater treatment and so now it's <strong>the</strong>turn <strong>of</strong> “atmospheric emissions”.We must start by mak<strong>in</strong>g a po<strong>in</strong>t: despite<strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> expression “emissions <strong>in</strong>to<strong>the</strong> atmosphere” has become an everydayexpression, very few people know exactlywhat <strong>the</strong> words mean. The1979 Geneva Convention ontransboundary atmosphericpollution def<strong>in</strong>es atmosphericpollution as "<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troductionby man <strong>of</strong> substances orenergy <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> air which havedeleterious effects on humanhealth, damage biologicalresources and ecosystems, cause <strong>the</strong> deterioration <strong>of</strong>material goods and are harmful to recreationalvalues and o<strong>the</strong>r legitimate uses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>environment…".Pollutant emissions <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> atmosphere arethus <strong>the</strong> "pressure factor" responsible foralter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> atmosphere's composition andare <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> environmentalproblems that are now seen as priority issueson both national and <strong>in</strong>ternational level, such as climate change, <strong>the</strong> hole <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ozone layer, acid ra<strong>in</strong>, , etc...International studies have shown that <strong>the</strong>reare close correlations between environmentalconditions and health and have identifiedatmospheric pollution from emissions <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>atmosphere as one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> factorsaffect<strong>in</strong>g human health. In a Europeancontext, <strong>the</strong>re are five ma<strong>in</strong> areas that causeatmospheric pollution:- energy production- vehicular transport- <strong>in</strong>dustrial production- agriculture and forestry- o<strong>the</strong>r uses.Virtually all atmospheric pollution orig<strong>in</strong>atesfrom <strong>the</strong> first three areas: energy, <strong>in</strong>dustryand transport.Identify<strong>in</strong>g and know<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> characteristics <strong>of</strong>atmospheric pollutants andcompil<strong>in</strong>g emissions dataare crucial actions thatneed to be taken <strong>in</strong> orderto assess <strong>the</strong>ir impact andformulate policies aimedat <strong>the</strong> reduction <strong>of</strong>atmospheric pollution. For this purpose, anEnvironmental Management250200150100500Program, structured <strong>in</strong> accordance with <strong>the</strong>ISO 14001 Standard <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> a detailedknowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> environmental impact <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>emissions consistently present <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>atmosphere, has recently been completed<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Copparo factory. The program, which lasted 5 years and<strong>in</strong>volved more than 1000 analytical tests, made it possible to reclassify all <strong>the</strong> emissionsand allowed us to focus our eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>gsystemsactions on <strong>the</strong> pollutants with <strong>the</strong>greatest environmental impact and to identify<strong>the</strong> critical substances that would have to besubject to more frequent checks. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> actions taken <strong>in</strong> recentyears as a result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monitor<strong>in</strong>g has been<strong>the</strong> gradual reduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong>solvents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>ts used (see <strong>the</strong> graphbelow that compares <strong>the</strong> quantity <strong>of</strong> pollutantthat could have been emitted on <strong>the</strong> basis<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current authorization and <strong>the</strong> quantitythat would actually be emitted if all <strong>the</strong>systems were runn<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> same time) and1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005Volatile organic substances<strong>the</strong> reduction/group<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> emissionsconta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g particulate material. And so, for “atmospheric emissions” too,<strong>the</strong> measures taken and <strong>the</strong> constantresearch <strong>in</strong>to new low environmental impactprocesses and improved technology forreduc<strong>in</strong>g pollutants, bear witness to <strong>Berco</strong>'sparticular care for <strong>the</strong> environment.Ing. News & EventsINTERMAT, A MIXTUREOF CONTINUITY AND INNOVATION<strong>Berco</strong> will be present at Intermat 2006 (Paris, 24th-29th April 2006), <strong>the</strong> most important fair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>year for <strong>the</strong> earth mov<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>ery <strong>in</strong>dustry, withits latest important production novelties.A cont<strong>in</strong>uous drive towards technological <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong>production processes is <strong>the</strong> most significant aspect <strong>of</strong><strong>Berco</strong>'s strategy, a strategy that has helped it to conquersuch a sizeable share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> market. For this reason, at <strong>the</strong>fair, a lot <strong>of</strong> space will be reserved for <strong>the</strong> productionprocess upgrades and developments that <strong>the</strong> CopparobasedItalian company has been able to implement <strong>over</strong><strong>the</strong> last few years, thanks above all to <strong>the</strong> massive<strong>in</strong>vestment policy (more than 100 million euros havebeen set aside for <strong>the</strong> 2005-2007 period). In particular, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g products area (some examplesare on display on <strong>the</strong> stand), <strong>Berco</strong> is able to <strong>of</strong>fer an evermore extensive range <strong>of</strong> components and has thus beenable to consolidate its lead<strong>in</strong>g position on this market. Frontidlers and sprockets, track l<strong>in</strong>ks, track shoes and trackrollers can be produced on <strong>the</strong> biggest mechanical press<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world (maximum thrust equivalent to 32,000 tons)and <strong>the</strong> new r<strong>in</strong>g roll<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e. Both <strong>the</strong>se l<strong>in</strong>es guaranteeextremely high quality components, thanks also to <strong>the</strong> forg<strong>in</strong>gprocess, which ensures better metallurgical characteristics, longer life (also because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subsequent speciallygauged heat treatments) and matchless reliability.Ano<strong>the</strong>r important step has been taken <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<strong>of</strong> a new generation <strong>of</strong> track rollers (some examples <strong>of</strong> trackrollers for excavators weigh<strong>in</strong>g up to 24 tons will be onshow on <strong>the</strong> stand), which take advantage <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>process <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new automatic assembly l<strong>in</strong>e.As well as research<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to ever more efficient productionprocess, <strong>Berco</strong> is also go<strong>in</strong>g ahead with <strong>the</strong> development<strong>of</strong> complete undercarriage systems for tracked mach<strong>in</strong>es.In order to meet <strong>the</strong> ever more press<strong>in</strong>g demands <strong>of</strong> OEMsfor so-called “turnkey” solutions, <strong>Berco</strong> is able to providesolutions for a wide range <strong>of</strong> applications, such as pavers, asphalt pavers, comb<strong>in</strong>e harvesters, etc… By work<strong>in</strong>gtoge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> customer right from <strong>the</strong> design stage, <strong>Berco</strong> is able to deliver<strong>the</strong> undercarriage complete with all its components, both mechanical and hydraulic, perfectly ready for <strong>in</strong>stallation on <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e be<strong>in</strong>g manufactured on <strong>the</strong> OEMs'assembly l<strong>in</strong>es.Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examples on display on <strong>the</strong> 741m2 stand <strong>in</strong> pavilion 6 are:- a wedge-shaped undercarriage for asphalt pavers with polyurethane-l<strong>in</strong>ed trackshoes for greater stability and to avoid damag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> road surface. The track cha<strong>in</strong>is 4.2 m long with a pitch <strong>of</strong> 155.1 mm- an undercarriage system for pavers, with rubber-coated track shoes. The paverhas 4 <strong>in</strong>dependent tracks, each one 2 m long with a pitch <strong>of</strong> 155.1 mm- a complete triangular undercarriage system for rice comb<strong>in</strong>e harvesters - analternative to wheeled versions giv<strong>in</strong>g greater stability and <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> us<strong>in</strong>gan extremely useful float effect. The track cha<strong>in</strong> is 2.8 m long with a pitch <strong>of</strong>171.45 mm.So, <strong>Berco</strong> will be at Intermat with a series <strong>of</strong> novelties which, while be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fruit<strong>of</strong> a policy based on cont<strong>in</strong>uity, make it abundantly clear that <strong>the</strong> drive towards<strong>in</strong>novation plays an essential part <strong>in</strong> stay<strong>in</strong>g ahead as market leader.BN46 > April 200615
