After retiring from theInternational Teamsters Union Local #186 in Ventura,Velasquez began volunteering for community commissions<strong>and</strong> organizations, serving as the first vicechairman<strong>of</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oxnard</strong> Homeless Commission<strong>and</strong> the current chair <strong>of</strong> the Fremont South NeighborhoodCouncil. He has been married <strong>to</strong> his wife Bettyfor 43 years <strong>and</strong> has two sons, Al Jr. <strong>and</strong> Michael, <strong>and</strong>two gr<strong>and</strong>sons, Angel <strong>and</strong> Gabriel.Keary Colbert: Detroit Lions’ WideReceiver, Port Hueneme AlumnusKeary Colbert expressed his appreciation for hisyears at the Port Hueneme Club with a significant contribution<strong>of</strong> $65,000 <strong>to</strong> the “One Campaign,” whichbenefits youth programs at the <strong>Clubs</strong>. A 2000 graduate<strong>of</strong> Hueneme High School, Keary played footballfor USC before moving on <strong>to</strong> the pros.His mother, Berma, movingly explained the impactBGCOP had on her son, “The Club provided anavenue for Keary <strong>to</strong> be around other kids (his brotherwas 12 years older <strong>and</strong> living away from home) <strong>and</strong><strong>to</strong> compete in athletics with some <strong>of</strong>the best players in Ventura County.He enjoyed going there every day,including weekends, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Clubs</strong>taff really reinforced the disciplinewe worked so hard <strong>to</strong>instill at home.”
