After retiring from theInternational Teamsters Union Local #186 in Ventura,Velasquez began volunteering for community commissionsand organizations, serving as the first vicechairmanof the City of Oxnard Homeless Commissionand the current chair of the Fremont South NeighborhoodCouncil. He has been married to his wife Bettyfor 43 years and has two sons, Al Jr. and Michael, andtwo grandsons, Angel and Gabriel.Keary Colbert: Detroit Lions’ WideReceiver, Port Hueneme AlumnusKeary Colbert expressed his appreciation for hisyears at the Port Hueneme Club with a significant contributionof $65,000 to the “One Campaign,” whichbenefits youth programs at the Clubs. A 2000 graduateof Hueneme High School, Keary played footballfor USC before moving on to the pros.His mother, Berma, movingly explained the impactBGCOP had on her son, “The Club provided anavenue for Keary to be around other kids (his brotherwas 12 years older and living away from home) andto compete in athletics with some ofthe best players in Ventura County.He enjoyed going there every day,including weekends, and the Clubstaff really reinforced the disciplinewe worked so hard toinstill at home.”
