Temperament and OrderlinessAnita was a very neat girl by temperament. She was always tidy in her dress and herhabits; her hair was always combed, made into two plaits and tied with ribbons <strong>of</strong> acolour matching her dress. She wore simple clothes, always washed and ironed. Theslippers or shoes she wore were polished brown or white as the case may be. She wasonly twelve years old and people wondered how she could be so meticulous. It was apleasure to see the satchel she carried to school. Her books were arranged in perfectorder; her note-books in a neat pile, all carefully covered with brown paper. Her handwritingwas very good and she took care to draw the margin, with the date written on theleft hand top corner, a line drawn after each exercise, as indicated by her teacher asnecessary. At home she was the one who tidied things sip and her mother was proud <strong>of</strong>her.Anita was fond <strong>of</strong> Bijoy, her classmate, because he was very intelligent, and together,they would share books and stories and incidents. Bijoy was a different type <strong>of</strong> personand his untidy ways and careless temperament <strong>of</strong>ten worried Anita. He did not care abouthis clothes. The buttons were <strong>of</strong>ten missing, the shorts never ironed; or he would wear anot-so-clean pair <strong>of</strong> shoes. His hair was unkempt and falling over his forehead. He wascapable <strong>of</strong> looking neat, capable <strong>of</strong> arranging things tidily and this was truly so, for,whenever the teacher spoke to him firmly he would mend his ways. However, very soonhe would lapse into his usual self and become careless again. It was difficult for him toshare with Anita the thought that when everything around you was in the right order, itgives you a good feeling.The teacher then tried another approach to make him feel the need for orderliness. Sheput him in charge <strong>of</strong> maintaining class order. He protested that he was hardly the personfor such a responsibility, but the teacher insisted and with some persuasion from Anita heagreed. This meant that he had to be very watchful about everything in class. He had tocome ten minutes earlier, see whether all the desks and chairs were arranged properly andput them in order it they were not. He had to see that the windows were bolted and werenot half-open. He had to observe if the class time-table was hung straight and so, too, thepicture on the wall. Have you noticed that many schools have pictures on the wall butsome <strong>of</strong> them are usually tilted at an angle <strong>of</strong> 45° and hundreds <strong>of</strong> people pass by andhardly anyone takes pity on the fate <strong>of</strong> these pictures? Bijoy also had to inspect the dressand shoes <strong>of</strong> his classmates as they came into the class. Of course he bossed over some <strong>of</strong>them who were milder than him and kept his distance from the bullies <strong>of</strong> the class whoteased him, but on the whole, they were cooperative and the whole class looked neater.What is more, he had to set an example himself and see that his shoe-lace was tied and
